It takes money to support a game that doesn't get that much official support these day

Technically speaking you can expand your inventory for free, you just need to get someone to give you a weapon (which is free from the trading restrictions the stuff you currently have has) and then you can (slowly) work from there getting either backpack expanders or selling shit on the market to buy an item from the tf2 store, which upgrades you. But, yeah. The 50 slot base backpack for F2Ps sucks, definitely helps having more. I think they still give out free backpack expanders during christmas, though.

I honestly vaguely remember the game. I recall the final boss or some sequence right before it had so much ungodly bullshit related to it where beating it was nearly impossible

I remember playing it with my brother, and it being total bullshit.

Yeah, I recall lots of bullshit near the end where I rage quit for literally a year before jumping back into the game
