I could never really get into DF. I downloaded the game, set up basic food production and was kind of at a loss as to what I should do from there.

All of these games are trivial, the challenge is self-imposed. You completely miss the point of dwarf fortress, which is why you think it's a worse game.

The focus is more on keeping workshops clear, which is more of a challenge in a fort that is utilising every industry. A workshop with a ton of stuff left in it will slow down to a snails pace, so you have to work out the logistics.

Dwarf Fortress is the thinking man's autism simulator because it does not hold your hand. It does not feel it necessary to tell you that you're winning or losing, because it relies on you to come up with your own goals, and hopes that, given enough time and prompting, you will stop walling yourself in, stop single-crop farming, stop all these things you do in the name of 'winning' and create your own win conditions instead of relying on the game to arbitrate them for you.

No, it's always trivial. It never approaches the depth of Rimworld, where you may actually have to rush harvest before frost, quickly employ many people as planters/harvesters/gatherers, actually risk starvation in case of failure/selling too much food.

I'm working on one now, however there is a major memory/moddability tradeoff when it comes to component based design and tiles.
Basically the only way to fit millions of tiles in is to crush multiple values into single bytes, but that isn't modder friendly.

kenshi was fun untill i started to see my character as not my character but as just one of my units
once this mental switch triggered the game lost all immersion for me and i couldn't play it any more.

go in vanilla for a first run, then start adding stuff as you play to fix what you feel is broken or don't like, a lot of the top subscribed mods are good

When it comes to cities they were generally surrounded by forts, not a fort themselves. You did have towns with a wall around, but they were drastically different, and have had buildings inside and on the outside of that wall.

There is a population thing in the original setup, where the less people you have the higher the chance of triggering an event to get you more. The lovecraft one with bigger pop from what i understand increases the number of people it throws at you before it starts grinding that number down again.

I enjoy Rimworld and I sunk a good number of hours into unlocking everything and making a self-sufficient colony that supported itself.

I didn't get to the point of sending caravans across the world because at that point I think it just stopped being interesting, and there was really nothing left to unlock and my base was so well guarded with turrets and while I wasn't getting raids of a hundred enemies with launchers and stuff, the raids I did get stood no chance. So I kind of just got bored and haven't touched it since.

I've played Dorf Fort, but not super extensively, but I do wish I could get more of that in a slightly easier to engage with package.

DFhack unlocks some basic mouse controls which speeds up some things, particularly non-repetitive designations
