4 is more unique in its story structiure, the first chapters of the game center each around the different characters and its only on the later chapters that the stories get connected and the character meet, it's pretty nicely done.

6 is more classic in its structure, the 2 big points is that it goes back to a job system like 3 but the characters are all unique. The second point and 6's biggest feature is the amount of worlds you visit, you have a lot of them and they're pretty cool.

other party members can do what she does better in some ways though, she was usually in my back-up team

Serena, for a short time, becomes a very good party member for plot reasons but then reverts back to mostly being a healer

Jade doesn't do much for the other party members, but she can hit like a fucking truck. Re-Vamp twice will buff her to maximum defense and attack, plus resistence to ailments. Multifeet will fuck shit up, yo. Femme Fatale mostly always will wipe common enemies. She's fast enough to go first, only Eric's quicker. But, her defense per se is kinda bad.

Now, I don't find Serena all that good. I think Rab gets better than her, since he's more of generalist, with good debuffs and skills. My current lineup is Hendrik for buffing support and damage, emergency zinger; Jade for fucking shit up; Rab for support, healing and occasional damage; 4th spot is interchangeable around Hero or Sylvando, mostly Sylvando for additional support (his healing skill is actually pretty fucking dope, for little mp investment).

I've never played a DQ game. I've played Chrono Trigger (and Cross but I remember none of it) and played FF 1, 4, 6, 7, 8, and a little bit of 10.

Dragon Quest has been largely unchanged since the NES. Frankly it annoys me a bit. The series gets constant praise for being "traditional" because of it's pedigree but any other JRPG would get blasted for being dated.

I'm playing the demo on Switch and it crashed for the second time (first time was right after I left Cobblestone village and finished talking to the horse tutorial NPC, second time when entered Heliodor castle the first time).
That's 2 crashes in 2 or 2,5 hours of gametime. What the fuck? Wasn't this crashing issue supposed to be fixed in a patch released a month ago? I checked and the game's version is 1.0.1, and when I force the Switch to check for updates it can't find any.
Anyone else with this issue? I'm enjoying the game but this shit is seriously putting me off, now I'm completely paranoid of playing, and I doubt I will get the full game if there is no fix.

I don't know, man. I like Dragon Quest for what it is, but imho it's even more soulless than FF in my opinion. It feels more like an industrial work made based on the same safe formula. The soullessness can most easily observed in the music. I'm sure the composer was making very great music in the past, but he is clearly burned out by now. I can feel the same about other parts of the game too.

It's a buggy mess, it crashed twice for me during the demo on the original patch too.

It's not a localization issue either, I was playing on the jap version and the dev had a fucking meltdown about it.

The full game is 100% going to crash occasionally, and I doubt it'll be fixed for months. Thankfully, autosaves on every loading trigger mean that you're probably not going to lose too much progress.

It's been a standard feature in Tales of games for at least 15 years now. One of the many reasons I love them so much.

VIII is great. VII is hands down the slowest game in the series. I actually quite like it (although the pacing early on is atrocious) but I'm like 60 hours in and probably only just halfway done.

But VII and VIII are quite different from each other. If you want to know the most popular DQ games recommended to people (at least on Yea Forums) are III, V and VIII.

Not in this case, they're re-releasing with extra content for exclusive to the Switch version. If that content gets ported back to the other platforms it'll revert back to PC, but until that happens Switch is definitive. If that never happens Switch will remain definitive.

Another example is Dragon Quest V, DQV should be definitively played on DS because even though there is a PS2 version with better graphics, the DS version has tons of extra content.

No, I will not even consider doing so unless the features come to PC.

If the Definitive Edition features come to PC via a patch or even a reasonably priced DLC, I'll likely buy. In fact, I specifically held out on buying Dragon Quest XI as soon as there were rumors of an 'enhanced' version coming, and would not buy a PC copy only to have it dead-end at an inferior version content-wise.

We already need to get away from console/platform exclusives by contract ideally, but its even worse when they are 3rd party exclusives. This situation is one of the more frustrating where there are "good/best versions" of a game that are not known to come out for ALL platforms on which the game is released. Catherine Full Body, Persona 5 Royale , and DQXI Definitive Edition are just a few examples. Ideally all of these "best versions" will come to PC, not to mention bringing over all of the enhanced Vanillaware games.

Regardless of anything else, if they don't bring the same new content in the Switch Definitive Edition to PC (and PS4 for that matter etc), they lose another shred of the already tattered player confidence

The only thing I didn't like about the demo (apart from the ridiculous 720p graphics) was the fact that the cities are fake-MMO style. I don't know why the hell the Japanese adopted this style. The first big city is a bunch of giant corridors with house textures where you can't get in most places, and some NPCs don't even have lines (sometimes speech bubbles pop into their heads with something generic).
