In the 80s and early 90s, the gaming industry was run by gaming companies (Nintendo, Sega, Atari, and the meme smaller devs). All they did was make fucking video games and video game systems.
Now you have Nintendo still doing their own thing, but the cutting edge of the medium is ran by Sony and Microsoft who barely give a shit about video games at all and would probably prefer you spent time using their consoles as social media devices, blu-ray players, and so on.
In short they aren't video game companies so their focus will never be on what a video game really should be, just on turning the biggest profit possible by any means. Now don't get me wrong, all devs wanted to make fat stacks in the past as well, but within the context of video games.
