HL2 is good, fuck all of you contrarian fucks

Well I agree, but for different reasons
Both games are very good, almost perfect, but each has its flaws
HL2 is a bit lackluster in how it presents the combine, some areas are too long (although I enjoyed Route Kanal a lot), and is a bit too easy
HL1 feels disjointed at times and some of it is pure padding (fuck On A Rail)

Opposing Force is the best of both worlds

I love hl2 lore, we got great stuff like combine destiny and entropy zero (haven't tried it), i autistically used to dig up all lore related stuff about the combine and events that happened during the combine invasion on earth when i was younger. but i prefer hl1 for the gameplay and map design

Entropy Zero is fun but goddamit some level design choices are more than quesitonable

Black Mesa wasn't exactly super secret, though?

The experiment that were going on down there were, though.
Secret enough that the military unit designed specially to handle facility failures is tasked with clearing it
(though it can be argued that it's a gman order/miscommunication that escalated)

Hey guys, thinking about making an audio version of this with music from Opposing Force. Any suggestions on tracks?

It's like the Los Alamos National Laboratory, but in the desert and with high security and even more experimental research. To the public it was probably known as some physics research lab, maybe some secret weapons development. But teleportation and actual gateways to alien worlds would not be known.

>IR laser training system
I've used one of those. They're fun af. The thing on the barrel sends out a laser signal when it registers the recoil from the blanks amplified by the barrel stopper. The black things on the vest and helmet receive those signals and register hits. You get in in a non-vital area of your torso and you get injured. You get hit on the head and you're dead. Basically classic Ghost Recon health system.

Just finished opposing force and it was really good. basically half life: abbreviated with better guns.
The squad stuff is contrived and not a game maker, but it does help pull you into the story. I'm a brainlet that missed most of the gman stuff in half life so the more obvious gman references were cool.

Some of the enemies are a little too spongey. I feel like when an enemy is allowed fast movement and good accuracy, then they should go down quicker. The blackops take so much punishment, some of the fights feel like you need to cheese them.

Thanks everyone for keeping the thread alive. Finished here:

On Hard mode, the male ops use the same grenade launcher you have (basically an instant kill if you don't strafe out of the way) and the female ops are invisible
Cheesing them (tripmines, lobbing a grenade where they spawn, sneak Deagle headshots) is basically required on hard

I agree. Love the entire series, even blue shift.
Which just makes the fact that the whole thing ends on a cliffhanger and a txt file released ten years later that also ends on a cliffhanger sadder.

Adrian is a good boy

damn, that's cool. it really jerked me back to an earlier fps time when difficulty was just adjusting health and movement speed. i got my shit pushed in enough but there are only 2-3 places where you really need to be on point against the black ops so I can see that not really defining the whole game. I usually do a hard run of games but i save scummed enough on normal. I know when i've been beat.

is this supposed to be ironic? zoomers hate Half-life 2 and only boomers like it

I hate hl2 and im a boomer

What's the reasoning behind this, "zoomers like pure gameplay" meme?

AI in HL1 was very advanced for its time. The fact that the ops were invisible AND silent made every fight very tense, I was never sure if I had killed them all yet. It was great.

No, boomers hate HL2 because it's more popular than HL1

>GMan shouldn't be involving himself too directly
Given that he literally gave Black Mesa the crystal in the first place, stopped Shephard from escaping with his army buddies near the beginning, did pic related, then also abducted both Freeman and Shephard, I think it would be pretty hard for him to be any less directly involved if he tried...

Him giving the crystal and subtlety sabotaging the experiment is a good indirect involvement.
I don't like that Gearbox made him visibly interact with what Adrian does.
It's the only criticism I have of Opposing Force.

Yeah Shephard's "evaluation" makes no sense if the person evaluating him is directly influencing the test.

>I don't like that Gearbox made him visibly interact with what Adrian does.
I always kind of took that to mean that Shephard was doing much more than GMan had anticipated and so had to step in to make sure things went according to plan.
I thought it was a great moment when you think you've stopped the place getting nuked, then moments later you're shown your work being casually undone and there's nothing you can do about it.

>We are at the mid-point in our trilogy of episodes which will conclude in Episode 3.

Yeah, it's excellent. Fuck the contrarians

>GMan shouldn't be involving himself too directly with what you're doing, imo
This, he gave black mesa the crystal, but it was black mesa scientist that caused the resonance cascade. He put Freeman on city 17, but it was Freeman who did the job, he told some guy to give Freeman a rocket launcher, but it was Freeman who used it. He told Alyx to give her dad some message that caused panic on him, which led him to decide on destroying the borealis rather than using it.
He's always depending on other people rather than doing the work himself, which could be because of what he said on hl2ep2, that he agreed to work under certain limitations or restrictions.

Just end it.

Am I the only one who thinks that Episode 1 and 2 were so much better than Half-Life 2 itself? Valve got really good at making the Half-Life 2-type game, the combat mechanics are pretty simple, but they learned how to use that unexceptional gunplay and poor enemy variety to make a captivating experience through the level design and combat-heavy sections.

That's factually wrong since most of it was placeholder geometry for levels like AirExchange and such, and whatever wasn't placeholder got cut because it simple wasn't fun.

I don't know why these stories about the beta attract so many delusional people, it reminds me of those youtube videos of some Half-Life 2 mod that uses all-new geometry and acts as if its ALL THE REAL BETA.

If they focused on the original storyline more rather than change it to the 2003-2004 eastern European & Gordon being Jesus style, it would've worked. From a plot perspective, the AirExchange made more sense than Nova Prospekt. The combine were actually draining resources from the environment, to the point where people had to wear gasmasks and children were building cremators in factories. Hence destroying the AirExchange actually helps the City 17 revolution plot rather than Gordon being a messiah due to blowing up an empty prison.
>I don't know why these stories about the beta attract so many delusional people
Most of Valve's cut content in all their games had a better concept than the final product. In HL2's case, the dark 1984 dystopia from the 2001 version would've been a good fit. Even the journey was longer and more diverse than retail HL2.

>better concept than the final product
Subjective. Everything you listed is in the final game in some way or another, it's just not spelled out for you because Valve assumed that you don' need exposition to be dropped on your lap.

I'm glad the grunts don't wear green. They wear more like something resembling the combine blue metal which I think is fitting because Nihilanth's people were under combine control before they escape to xen. So the combine put what they thought was their puppet leader in office, gave him a floating chair, armored his army of oppression and put all of the plebs in chains, then the puppet leader teleported is entire populace into another universe but continued to enslave them "for their own good" -or some equally hollow reason.

Makes you wonder how an actual Episode Three would have turned out. Laidlaw’s Epistle Three outline definitely would have been watered down pretty hard.

Is this a Nirvana t-shirt?

>Hmmm. I don't know... You still can't tell the game is set in a former soviet republic, could you make it a little more obvious?

>random communist symbol on hat
Have you ever been to russia?

Never-mind the fact that the blog post is just a very short version of the basic story for Episode 3, but the initial story is never what ends up in the actual games, Mark Laidlaw even said so himself on twitter after his blog post got big, but you people never pay attention to what they actually say.

Not the guy but I've been to St Petersburg and they sell these things all over the fucking place

>made in china souvenirs = actual culture of the country
Never go to Paris or London

For Valve, the story comes after the gameplay/ level design etc. Would've been interesting to see how they'd do the arctic area with the 2007 source engine if they released it in 2008. I recokon they would've kept the end scene where Gordon flies with the Borealis through space-time shit until we see the combine dyson sphere. The games were always meant to end on a cliffhanger, ep3 ending with Gordon on a beach many years into the future. How they would've went from there when it came to an actual post Episode 3 HL3 is beyond me. Even if they never planned a HL3, Ep3's ending was a definitive conclusion, even if humanity lost. It beats Ep2's ending at least, and Valve wouldn't have to even bother or be afraid to mention the HL franchise had they done Ep3 in 2008.

Attached: YOU KNOW HOW MUCH I SACRIFICED.jpg (1280x720, 43K)

Can you even use a grenade launcher in the type of field exercise that this pic is from?

>cliffhanger
Learn the difference between an open ending and a cliffhanger. The end of Episode Two (and Episode One) was a cliffhanger because it left the story arc unfinished. The end of Episode Three (and of HL1 and HL2) was an open ending that finished the story arc while keeping things open for a sequel with a new story arc.

Aside of the sfx edits HL is not mainstream at all
>E-Celebs doing what they can to capitalize on every aspect of it ever since the Epistle Meme came out
What?

Just finished Half Life for the first time. Weapon variety was great, platforming was somewhat annoying and just kind of there without any standout moments and the combat was alright. I liked how the alien grunt takes less damage when you hit the chest armor instead of the exposed parts, and the HECU seemed to have some decent AI. Pretty hard game overall with some bullshit moments involving fall damage or getting stuck in the environment, but for the most part it's a good challenge. feels like a game I'll enjoy more on a second playthrough.
I don't get why people hate xen so much, I thought it was cool.

Is Blue shift worth playing? Everybody talks up opposing force so that's a shoe-in, but I don't hear much about Barney.

Blue shift is much shorter in comparison to op4, but still worth playing.

Are the Grunts just beefed up Vortigaunts?

Pretty much, think of metrocops and overwatch soldiers, grunts are at least partly synthetic since they are shown being processed on alien factories in Xen.

NOOOOOOOOOO THINK OF THE ADVERTISERS

All the intelligent Xen aliens share some common features, so they are probably related somehow. Maybe they're like an insect hive with dedicated caste subspecies.

So what is Combine exactly?

Blue Shift is worth playing but it's very short and completely vanilla. The one unique tool Blue Shift was going to feature was cut for unknown reasons (handheld flashlight replacement for the crowbar).

Then there's a third, multiplayer co-op expansion called Decay, that was exclusive to the PS2 version, but was reverse engineered and remade on the PC by fans. (Gearbox finished an official PC port of Decay too, but Sierra blocked them from releasing it)

The PC version of Decay is good enough, but not entirely identical to the PS2 version; There are some minor glitches and oversights.

Mysterious extra-dimensional empire that invaded our planet
Somehow, we are special enough that the gman lured them to us, and we can develop teleportation when they cannot
This is the idea of the Borealis as a plot device

Yeah, I knew they were manufactured but that art makes them just seem like beefed up Vortigaunts. Considering the Vortigaunt is also called the Alien Slave, it seems very plausible that it could be the same species as the Alien Grunt with only their jobs being different. In that way, they would be similar to humans. Valve could've explored this more by including Alien Grunts in Half-Life 2. Maybe the Vortigaunts in that could've manufactured more Alien Grunts to assist with the resistance against the Combine. Then there's the Alien Controller which is clearly different but I think they're just mini Nihilanths or something

Imperial alien race that's formed from countless of other alien species that are captured and turned into bio-mechanical hybrids.

When it comes to the Decay expansion, having someone to play in co-op is highly recommended because the co-op partner has almost no AI in single player.
What little AI it does have for self defense is totally broken on the fan made PC port, and you have to switch between both characters to move them around and do stuff when playing alone.

Okay, I'll blast through Blue Shift tonight and get onto OF tomorrow.

>Decay
Wasn't that the one with the bonus level where you could play as a vort?

So Combine can teleport between universes but cannot do the same locally?

They can't even teleport between universes. They're opportunists using Xen, just like us. This is why the Resonance Cascade allows them to invade us, and why they want to create another one in Episode 1.

>What little AI it does have for self defense is totally broken on the fan made PC port, and you have to switch between both characters to move them around and do stuff when playing alone.
Yeah, fuck that. I'll stick with the singleplayer expansions. Decay sounds like a whole lot of hassle for not much payoff.

I wonder what exactly was the catalyst for Resonance Cascade

It's always funny to get killed by your own squadmate in OpForce and have them say
>"Hey, did you see that one Corporal ?"

Half Life used to be pretty mainstream, now it's forgotten to time thanks to Valve

Gordon being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

>Blue Shift is worth playing but it's very short and completely vanilla.
My first Half-Life game was Blue Shift as a kid. It came with Opposing Force multiplayer but not the single player campaign. I still got to see all of the cool shit in the manual like the extra guns, new aliens and other features like radios and squad commands. Maps also looked cooler, I remember seeing pic related in the installer and wanting to play it since I wanted to see more of the desert area. This hype for OpFor that I built in my head as a kid is probably why it's my favourite Half-Life game today desu

Attached: Op4_install2.jpg (640x480, 422K)

Exactly. This is one of the main advantages the resistance have against them, they are trying to crack down local teleport tech but is still way slower than human tech, took Gordon and Alyx weeks to reach Kleiner's lab with the combine teleport at Nova Prospekt. This is also the reason why Eli wanted Gordon to destroy the Borealis.

I loved fighting against soldiers in HL1 and they never fuck around

Fighting with them is kinda fun, but then in Black Mesa you hear their desperate calls for help and you realise how fucked they just are

Recommend Half-Life mods.
Half-Life 2: DownFall is short, but sweet.

Ultra based

It's like the bad guys from XCOM Enemy Unknown but more cold and calculating and inhuman.

I think they view organic autonomous life as a disease, if their vocabulary in HL2 is any indication

This looks like it was made in sfm. I can tell by the AO and making quite a few sfm pornos in my time.

CHUCK

You can't make shaders like this in GMod unless you After Effects it like STBlackST does.

You're right

I love HL2 but I wish we got the beta

>i wish we got the unfinished buggy mess cause my feelings :(
Christ.

Missing information is probably all we're gonna get

Unless someone goes full Black-Mesa-Autismo and decides to fully recreate the beta but it'll probably take like 10 years just like BM

Half-Payne

This beta discussion reminds me of the shitload of discarded content from Bioshock Infinite

At least HL2 was good unlike Infinite
fuck you Kevin

ok
Yeah I dug the dark dystopian vibe a lot. HL2 was great but there was somehting unique about it.
MAybe someday

Could be re-created as a prequel of a sort. Maybe Combine is softer now because they had setbacks in the past. Could even have Shepard as the leading figure this time.

load it with chalk rounds

I feel that Half Life could have done more with Xen and its creatures and I feel that Half Life 2 similary could have done much more with Combine, on top of squandering Xen even more.
Most of the game you just spend shooting Soldiers or Zombies

most likely for smoke/flare rounds yeah

Why do people feel okay with openly mentioning bad ideas such as this?

Attached: 1568796986979.jpg (1185x945, 128K)

You spend a lot of time shooting Marines on HL1 because they are fun (and challenging) to fight. It's one of the first AIs to actually flank you, retreat when injured, and lob grenades to dislodge you

Zombies are fun to fight for a different reason, they are slow, predictable, but also fairly durable and dangerous in close combat. It's a change of pace from soldiers.

Problem with Combine in HL2 is that they're not as durable as the Marines, and a lot more aggressive (to the player) so their strategies won't kick in until after most of the squad is dead.
Watching AI vs AI battles in HL2 shows that the soldiers are actually not dumb and use some interesting squad tactics.

Did the army kill any humans in the shepard game?

The Combine left the Earth many years ago. Breen changed the occupation policy after a riot.
Or it's a different city with a different policy.

>jogging with a gas mask

jfc how horrifying.

HL2 has some good AI scripts, it's mostly that you don't get to see a lot of them because of the pace of the game and use of friendly allies.
Do you mean does it show any of them killing scientists?
Not that I remember but Shephard can blast scientists

Half-Life 2 + Episodes have a very limited sandbox for enemies and combat mechanics, but Valve learned how to put what was available to good use, and it shows, especially in the episodes, as the gameplay is much more tight-knit in those.

They should've included those scenes of the supermarket, suburbs, farm, etc. in the final game desu

>Could be re-created as a prequel of a sort.
Could work
>Maybe Combine is softer now because they had setbacks in the past
But isnt the Combine like a Type II mechanical cosmic horror-tier size civilization? As far as we know the forces that attacked Earth are probably just a microscopic detachment of the actual Combine forces.

Besides if the game is set as a prequel then the Combine would be at full force since they just conquered earth

I think a literal slideshow sitting the player down and forcing him to watch would have been retarded and you should have your head examined.

seems like your average fallout intro

No, and it's a bit strange, narratively speaking.
Adrian crashes, he's dragged out of the Battlefield by an HECU medic, then wakes up in Black Mesa infirmary (where scientists are trying to heal other marines). Then, you meet your CO who's holding a scientist and interrogating him on where Freeman is. They don't appear to kill him after they pull out.
After that, HECU is basically working with whomever's left of Black Mesa Sec to contain Race X invaders. A security guard opens up a whole armoury for a squad of marines to attack the final boss.

My "theory" is that the order to kill scientists got badly relayed and/or unevenly applied by the Marines (you're supposed to find scientists held prisoners, not killed, in the nuclear silo during the base game. It got scrapped, because there was a bug.) They then just focused on killing Freeman as a person because he had been killing their buddies. Circle of revenge and all that.

Attached: 1524212414878.jpg (1000x563, 460K)

Yeah, and there was also a slideshow in the opening of Half-Life, Opposing Force, and Blue Shift.

>tram ride good
>slideshow bad

Too bad I'll keep on giving you (You)s
I agree that my idea doesn't make much sense when I reread it but I just wanted to post.

This, at least the exposition dumps in the final game werent as annoying as sitting you in front of a fucking proyector and receiving a history class

I mean they could've gone with ACTUALLY showing those suburbs/supermarkets, maybe show how people live under the Combine, kinda like the apartment building at the beginning of the final game.

It wouldn't have to be a literal slideshow. The scenes could just be overlaid as the G-man speaks at the beginning, similar to how it shows the test chamber. It would be a good way to give an idea of what was happening when Gordon was in stasis

Smod Redux Final for HL2

Attached: d2_prison_070098.jpg (1920x1080, 347K)

Yeah, that's pretty much it. I just realized how good you are into getting complex ideas down to some very basic terms that the average retards can understand, you must relate a lot with them

yeah. it also gives you a sense for how big the facility is and what you have to all run through.

would have been better if the player actually got back to the tram areas so he could get a sense of progress. I personally always wanted to explore those ares the moment they showed them.

Attached: dims.jpg (530x298, 29K)

The final game does a good job at giving you the information that the events at Black Mesa spread out to the whole world, drew people to cities, and facilitated the arrival of the Combine. In the end, all of the unused concepts of Half-Life 2 we all read about work best in our imaginations, and not in game.

nah i'm lonely.

The Half-Life games have always been more about environmental storytelling. An exposition dump would just be out of place. You're supposed to be looking at the world around you, listening to what it sounds like and coming to a conclusion about how things came to be the way they are. Every small detail of every level in the games is there for a reason and some of those parts are explicitly trying to tell a story of their own.

Yeah but I want to see regular civilians come into contact with the aliens in everyday situations back when the world was normal. For about 10 seconds of footage, I don't see what there is to lose by including it

Red, yellow, and blue. These are the colors of Half-Life 2!

Attached: 20170830005633_1.jpg (1920x1080, 535K)

Was anyone here lucky enough to play Decay co-op on the PS2? I did all the way through over and over again for a whole summer. The vortiguant mission, and then me and my friend would 1v1 on the multiplayer maps. It was great.

Attached: 1500770578519.gif (500x281, 489K)

Well, here's how you can do it. Close your eyes, and imagine it. If you don't have an imagination, boot up Gmod and post the scene yourself.

Entropy Zero for HL2 (ep 2 to be precise)
Echoes for HL1

I don't like Entropy Zero, player is a bit too fragile for it to be fun. I do like the concept, though.

More like colors of the source engine.

>I don't see what there is to lose by including it
The game's identity, time, pacing, a million different things related Valve's design philosophy when it comes to Half-Life. The game's exposition is subtle, and having Eli sit Gordon down to show him a film of headcrabs killing normal people would be the opposite of that.

>regular civilians come into contact with the aliens in everyday situations back when the world was normal
But isnt there like a small window of time between the Black Mesa shitshow and the 7 hour shitshow? Besides there's plenty of Vortigaunt-Human bonding in HL2 and its episodes anyway

But doors deal damage per frame, so even grunts would get gibbed fast.

Yep, really quality co-op, shame they won't port it for Sven Co-op.

ok but HL1 was a hundred times better

The portal storms are what cause the events at Black Mesa to spread to the rest of the world, and those only happen when The Nihilant dies, so there's enough time for the things that Eli describes to happen. Not that it would be a good idea for Valve to implement a section where they literally sit Gordon down to watch a literal slideshow.

Attached: Generation Kill Rudy Run Faster.webm (1280x720, 1.88M)

Perhaps the Breencasts (which do a really good job at introducing the character and the world we live in) could have been expended a bit on that direction.

They had good designs that they could have used to diversify both the enemy amount as well as story telling in the world.
For most part the occupation hardly feels alien.
The Alien Gunship is literally a reskin of the Attack Helicopter when it comes to fighting one.
The only Alien Combine ground force you fight is the Strider.
The only real addition to Xen fauna are the Antlions.

Half Life 2 just looks and feels bland. It had a strong and somewhat unique aesthetic with Xen and they brought in another somewhat unique look with Combine Synths, but at the end of the day both just fell flat and not explored.
Half Life 1 had
>Gargantuan
>Tentacle thing
>Alien Shark
>Mama Headcrab
>Nihilant
as major boss reveals, plus the way how Alien Grunts and Controllers were introduced.
Half Life 2 had that Fast Zombie reveal and Antlion Guard when it came to Xen monsters and Strider and Gunship for Synth enemies.

When I play Half-Life 2, not only do I have to use one of the most unsatisfying pistols put into a game and then later look at the ugly abomination of gun design that is the AR2, I am constantly reminded that the game could have been much more in both presentation and execution.

>wanting a nerd scientist bf instead of a CHAD marine bf

Yeah. I missed the aliens a lot

That's a lot of words to just say HALF-LIFE 2 BAD, you could have just said that and the retards you wanted to impress would have agreed with you regardless of what you wrote.

this! upvoted!

What's wrong with the AR2?
Doesn't feel nearly as powerful as the big gun Shepard gets in Op4, but it's not bad by any means
I agree that the Magnum just blows, though. Deagle in Op4 was better.

In terms of sound, atmosphere, art direction, and atmosphere?

It's the GOAT.

but some will say it's bad writing

I never understood why most of HL1's enemies were cut from 2. Even the enemies from the hl2 beta had more variety than retail hl2. Zombines and hunters from ep1 and 2 were good additions, but compared to beta HL2 and HL1's enemies, very small.

That scale seems a little fucked up.

What the FFFuck...

Attached: hqdefault.jpg (480x360, 6K)

What caused the recent surge of HL1 memes?
Not that I'm complaining

Magnum on 2 is way more useful because enemies aren't bloated in HP.

Elites go down in 1-2 shots in normal, compare to marines where they tank 2-4 shots.

It wouldn't hurt to have Houndeyes and Bullsquids at least.

Its 2.5 miles high. The burj is barely half a mile high

YOU

MY
shit up

>I never understood why most of HL1's enemies were cut from
Time constraints. A lot of the time spent in the development of Half-Life 2 was focused on developing the technology, which leads to tards, who can't understand how all that get ends up being used in the final game, to screech and shit their pants.

More like due leak.

For you.

Attached: 1563800285622.jpg (1680x1050, 463K)

Fuck off the AR2 is kino
>sounds like a fucking drum
>each "round" holds 30 shots and has 30 in a magazine.
>that's 900 fucking shots per soldier

They don't do a very good job portraying it that way ingame, then.

You weren't even alive when Half-Life 2 came out, should you really be spouting these things as if you knew what you are talking about?

Yeah, it's been awhile, but I don't think the HECU ever spoke on, or gave a direct order to slaughter scientists. They were told to contain the mess, while shit almost immediately hit the fan, among a bunch of miscommunication left, and right. Someone's bound to panic, take it the wrong way, and assume everyone outside of the HECU are potentially dangerous targets.

There are plenty of historical examples of miscommunication, panic, or sheer chaos leading to unintended slaughter.

You're right, there are so many taller buildings around it, the Citadel barely stands out.

>tfw Adrian Shepard is stuck in suspended animation for the rest of eternity
Feels bad man

20th anniversary, HL SFX memes, Project Borealis recent update videos, a few fags

I don't know, the Citadel feels like 95% of it is empty space. I would have liked just a bit of exposition.
The little Metropolice garage at the beginning of the game feels more authentic than the whole citadel/combine Nexus.

Both are memorable. HECU is just easier to love because they've got more character.

probably has to do with the fact that I'm more of the scientist/nerdy type and I would like to date someone different in personality

Attached: 1568491088932.png (434x606, 278K)

The houndeyes and bullsquids were pretty much finished , judging by the 2003 leak. No need for you to suck Valve dick, considering they were still gonna delay the game to a 2004 release, regardless if the leak happened or not.
Gabe just had to talk outta his ass in 2003.
They spent 4-5 years in development, and the combine soldiers AI is braindead compared to the HECU soldiers from HL1.

Freeman is still laying in that hangar.

>wow the design doesn't even make sense in-game, I love it

Attached: 1566162725261.png (812x760, 112K)

No one cares, forget about freeman

>combine soldiers AI is braindead compared to the HECU soldiers from HL1.

The issue isn't AI, but map design,Black mesa uses nearly same code and you can see the bullshit.

Not to support bad ai, but from a story stand point, it kind of makes sense for the combine to be retarded.

The leak is what drove them to finish HL2 at all. If not for the leak, Gabe would have let the devs keep on experimenting and we would have easily gotten a HL2Ep3 situation years earlier.

>20th anniversary
That was last year. Half life released in 1998

hehehehe

Attached: zoz.jpg (1600x900, 97K)

The Citadel is clearly unfinished coming from the fact that Episode One’s entire first half is made from recycled cut Citadel content.

White Forest is a pretty comfy retirement place. Barney's there too.
Shepherd? He's stuck floating on a fucking Osprey through some meme starry corridor.

>retards unironically think you are supposed to walk through the entirely of the citadel because ???
How do you people still exist?

is this from GK? why don't i remember this scene

I remember when I actually cared about half life, and without a hint of irony wanted an episode 3
Epistle 3 was both great because it gave closure and terrible since it pretty much confirms it's never happening

Attached: 1560200073498.gif (450x253, 997K)

Not what I said.
Half Life 1 was about Alien Invasion into a Research Facility and for the most part Half Life delivered on that.
Half Life 2 was about Alien Occupation of Earth and while they delivered on the Earthly aspects with the quasi-Eastern European setting and the environment surrounding it, the Alien part felt utterly neglected, as if they were afraid to commit to it.
I don't hate Half Life 2, but to me it lacks that sense of completeness that you get from Portal and early TF2.
Portal to Portal 2 feels much more satisfying than Half Life to Half Life 2.
As for gameplay, those physics puzzles have aged pretty bad, so it has a tech demo feel to it that maybe at the time was something to write home about but now just feels tacky and it could have been implemented in a much better way.

Its the design of it that bothers me and it functionally is just a bigger SMG. The bouncy ball of death was fine alt-fire but if Half Life 2 was following Half Life 1 philosophy, then SMG and AR needlessly overlap their main fires. Op4 had a different weapon philosophy to mainline games

They could have just plopped a few of them down in the canal levels and it would have added just that little extra atmosphere and world building.

Rude

youtube.com/watch?v=YJZiIjyeT78

Problem of HL2 AI is threefold
>not enough health compared to grunts, so they die easily, even on hard, before they can flank you and use their tactics
>overly aggressive and focused on taking down the player ; HECU grunts wouldn't run at you if it made them lose a defensible position, they would just spam grenades, they would also retreat, when the Combine never does
>extremely tight quarters for the AI to fight in, little room for cover or taking alternate routes to attack the player
Only the 2nd point makes sense in-game.

HECU are basically first marine recon, right? The shirts they wear in the Opposing Force Tutorial/Basic Training seem to say so.

If that's the case, doesn't that mean the HECU are the same "caliber" as these recon dudes?

It's the first 9 minuets of the first episode, and you were probably more distracted by the immediately preceding footage of Fruity Rudy's naked gay butt than the jog he did afterwards.

If anything, the leak made Gabe put the team to work and finished the game. The funniest thing is that the leak was discovered a few days after they announced the delay in september 2003, since no way in hell they were gonna ship in 2003 at all.
If post leak 2004 Gabe was still a thing, we would've got Episode 3 and the Episode 4 return to Ravenholm by Specter finished before 2010 began.

There are some little signs of humanity which are hilarious and interesting.

I don't trust them enough with L4D IP. Half-Life is too much for them, since everyone who worked on it left already.

If I remember, orange box "fix" the ai a bit compared to vanilla release.

They still go rambo but sightly less. Map design on EP2 really show what they can do tho.

Hardcore Henry?

What about Hardcore Henry though?

there are more "moments" that i enjoy that are overshadowed by the entire game.

its such a mixed bag of ideas, that if you're not in the mood for litterally everything the game throws at you, its going to have a bunch of lows.

Basically Blue Shift in movie form to dab on all the fuckers that kept insulting it.

SO Harcore henry?

An hour long G-mod shitpost a'la gorgeous freeman

Speaking of gmod shitposts, why haven’t we been posting any Gmod/SFM videos yet?

Because there's a separate thread for that

I still remember when the HL2 Episodes Trilogy was announced, with the promise that Episode Three would be out by Christmas 2007.

I remember 2006, getting excited by the teaser videos leading up to the release of Episode One, playing through Episode One in one long session, and then getting really excited seeing the Episode Two trailer after the Episode One credits.

I remember 2007, getting hyped for Episode Two and the Orange Box, playing the TF2 beta in the week leading up to release, enjoying the surprisingly fun Portal, and diving into Episode Two and getting absolutely blown away by it. I remember being disappointed that there was no Episode Three trailer at the end like the Episode Two trailer at the end of Episode One.

I remember 2008 and 2009, and getting confused by L4D and L4D2 and the complete lack of silence on Episode Three.

I remember 2011, when Portal 2 came out, with no mention of Episode Three.

I remember 2017 and Epistle Three.

Because it's not. The VNN guy made a video on about it and made up a whole story about it being a Left 4 Dead map and how the game was going to be set in the middle east. The map is actually a CSGO map and was always planned to be one.

What do you guys think of boneworks
Looks line ripoff half life but in VR

Kerry Davis from Valve was at the recent Digipen talk, and confirmed that they invited the Boneworks devs at Valve and shared stuff with them. Considering HL VR is Valve's flagship title, Boneworks is the closest thing to a vr Halflife until that launches.

Nice taste, user.

>implying valve won't just buy out the project borealis mod team and publish it

Everyone of their games like CS,L4D, and TF started out as half life fan mods

>You can hear some safety protocols being shutdown on decay.
>Mod don't play them.

I wonder if game ever going get properly ported.

Alright, I finished my second round of op4/HL dubbed HECU runs.
files.catbox.moe/d8o6wr.webm (won't let me upload it to wsg for some reason)
I tried to keep to songs I felt appropriate, so let me know which one you all think works best.

This is what hurts the most.
Knowing that even if Valve themselves came out and broke more than a decade of waiting, speculation and rumors, it would just not live up.
Not just because of the wait and that so many other games and franchises have surfaced since then, but the storytelling and quality the series became known for would be absent, or just heavily watered down, and if Dota or Artifact are anything to go by, it'd just be plagued with references to their other products to the point of obnoxiousness.

Bless you for all of these, but Storm is definitly the best!

Okay so hear me out
We take a Hecu marine and have him be the main character
Basically he gets fucked up by Freeman and swears revenge
He escapes Black Mesa only to find out that the combine are invading so he helps the losing battle. He survives, and gets a boat where he fights against the combine for years until the events of half life 2 begin and he goes to hunt down Freeman

>it's another joke about hunt down the freeman
>it's another cry for help because someone can't let go from half-life
>it's another autistic screech about how the concepts from the beta were better than the finished game
>it's another "oh im so sad" post
>it's another if a game was made today it'd suck post
Just once I'd like to see something that I hadn't seen a thousand times before in these threads.

Project Borealis is being made in Unreal and will never be bought out.

It’s Boreal Alyph that we need to be worried about. Not only is that Ep3 project being done in Source, they already have past communication with Valve and got a special license from them.

We could always laugh at Tyler for genuinely believing HLVR is a thing if that's your jam and if that helps with variety.

attack his weakpoint for massive damage

I wonder if valve ever going port HL episodes again for consoles.

I mean, it's been quite long time since orange box.

They'd need to actually have some kind of structure to organize a team for console ports, so keep dreaming.

even an average laptop from 2014 can play HL2, plus, Valve abandoned consoles since Portal 2.

>with no clue what the fuck it actually is

Well, they have a android port for shield.Which is samey hardware as switch.

But yeah, considering the whole hierarchy fuckery on valve I really doubt.

These Half-Life threads have been the best thing on this board in forever.

Yeah. Honestly, it's been more of the same, but I'm still having a comfy time with you all.

It's nice to see Half Life so loved still, even Tripmine has shown a lot of life recently. They opened a discord and have been posting more of their recent work on Guard Duty and Operation Black Mesa.

Pic related is a screen from Vicarious Reality, the biodome level. Really hope they manage to recapture the atmosphere of quiet abandonment that chapter had: Little ammo, quiet, broken hallways, and no living soul besides the aliens

Nobody on valve cares to do it.
And even if there was one dude, he'd have to spend so much time getting it to work on his own it would hurt his group performance rated by his peers, and would get him fried.

It's better at valve to look busy than to actually have to compromise and do hard work.

I didn't even know those two projects were a thing. Thanks, user.

Guard Duty huh?

i hope hlvr is real for his sanity
the despair in his eyes when the ep3 script came out was saddening

Poor kid was borderline suicidal through most of 2018. The VR game not coming out in 2019 and not being HLVR is going to absolutely crush him.

Talking about ports you can pretty much play half life/expansions/CS on mobile using xash3d
Cool shit

GO. RECON. MOVE. IN.

Enlighten me on xash

i remember how optimistic he was about the future of artifact after it came out.

Tyler is just there to suffer, it seems

I wonder if they keep xen closer to the original, or go with Black Mesa's portrayal.

Goldsrc built from scratch
moddb.com/engines/xash3d-engine

Can be ported to shitload of devices

You think humans could domesticate houndeyes? Would be awesome if there was a sequence where rebels utilize them as shock and awe for attacks on combine patrols

>player is a bit too fragile for it to be fun.
Eh i found it tolerable, besides you're a fucking metrocop, you dont have a state of the art hazard suit or a kevlar vest, your armor is paper thin, and they're easy to kill

What's the best way to go through this? I played through it on hard and it was some of the least fun I've had in a long time

Yeah, every time I'm astounded at the lack of shit posting. It's just a bunch of anons reminiscing about a great franchise and the good times they had.

And my crew keeps gettin bigger
