Is having a silent protagonist that's not a create-a-character ever a good idea?

Well written MC > Fallout-like player choice > Silent > Retarded pussy or generic harem MC

No, but theyre fine enough as an avatar.

But an MC with actual opinions and feelings will always be better character building than an avatar.

Silent protagonists with dialogue choices that matter are the best forms of MC because they represent you at its best
MC with its own character is alright but it feels like he's not "you", but merely a robot that's integral to the story while you're the pilot
Completely silent MCs come out as autistic

This.
The moment the game starts to actually acknowledge that the protag is silent though, bail. From that point on it's nothing but cringe.

It depends on the context
Like the in the Breath of Fire games, having Ryu be silent is retarded and makes no sense because he as a character is usually central to the narrative and even in games where he isn't, he still has an expansive backstory that ties into the lore of the world
Characters that are just context free and meant solely to represent the player (like the average Pokemon protagonist), on the other hand, are usually a-okay.

Imagine caring about player representation in the game. I bet you are also one of these people who think not playing as white cis schoolboy is gay or something.

>cis

user do you realize how much of an unapproachable faggot you're being right now? Get ready for school already, mom will be mad.

Some of the best JRPG ever had silent protag, like Chrono Trigger, DQ or Breath of Fire 1-4.
As long as the game is well written both are fine, FF IV, VII and such are great games with talking MCs and so.
There are also examples of terrible jrpg like most modern Tales of with voiced MC and such.

I always removed Crono permanently from the party after he dies

>I bet you are also one of these people who think not playing as white cis schoolboy is gay or something.
Lol if you have a fully customised protag who can decide his own choices in the story you can have him be anything you want him to be. This means you can even have him as a gay black man if you want to roleplay. You probably didn't think of that because you want you're incapable of having imagination.

Yes some people have no imagination and find it easier to think of themselves as the protagonist.

Never

go back to resetera, homo

It made for a nice stylistic choice to change the roles of Ryu and Nina in V

the only people who cry about silent protags are people who enjoy cinematic video games

Am I the only one getting a brain tumor for reading this?

No character from fiction can be "you", because even if you get a silent character with dialogue options, he'll still behave much less like an human than full-fledged character, and is therefore farther from you.

Based.Mother 3 would have been better

*Mother 3 would have been better if lucas talked all the way through, and not only when he's "not in the party".

ok JRPGfag

Several of Mother 3's story scenes would hit less hard if you constantly had feedback for how events are affecting the character you're playing
