Any other games like this? I mean arcadey and not full on autism like the X games.

I don't think so, but I think I have seen one on steam that has similar gameplay. There's also Everspace, which is a roguelike.

Don't call it a roguelike if it's not like fucking Rogue.

Rebel Galaxy Outlaw

procedurally-generated game levels

Huh, I thought that was a mobile title. Is it any good?

It's fun, my biggest complaint is that there are not enough flyable ships for my taste. Music is kino.

Freelancer 2 when

Underspace

It's dogshit, a literal phone port

I thought that was Galaxy on Fire

Oh wait yeah I got mixed up. Galaxy on Fire was the mobile shit I was thinking of.

It was, as well, but at least it got slightly better with patches.

I played Rebel galaxy outlaw for 15 minutes before I gave up and deleted it.

thank gods I pirated it

what was wrong with it

its like rogue in that it shares some similarities, thus a roguelike

That's the most retarded fucking thing I've read all week on here. If it plays nothing like Rogue then it's not a roguelike.
Protip: Rogue is turn-based so most of these garbage pixelshit indie games are out.
You know what is a space roguelike? Prospector. Why is that? Because it plays like Rogue.

it doesnt play nothing like rogue. it plays somewhat like it because it has similar elements. its like rogue. a rogue like.

>hurr every game is an RPG because you play the role of somebody
>hurr every first person game is an FPS because you are first person
>durr it's actually a Ponglike because you can control your toon
Please understand that your kind is a waste of oxygen and should be publicly executed.

Calm down autismo

It's hard when the website that was made for people like me are infested with absolutely braindead normalfags.

Those braindead normalfags understand the term better than you do, so what's that say about you?

roguebasin.com/index.php?title=Berlin_Interpretation
You are calling a real time space shooter a roguelike because it has a randomly generated map. You don't know shit about the term.

how long until that gamedev train faggot that shills his shitty freelancer clone game constantly lands in this thread?

Attached: 1543401074432.jpg (670x670, 43K)

Attached: 1568663396292.gif (273x310, 424K)

he posts regular updates on its blog, you can just check there

No, it's a roguelike because it's randomly generated and has permadeath

>he missed out on the golden age of Yea Forumslancer

I’d feel sorry for you but you posted an anime reaction image so you’re subhuman.

Haha dude permadeath! No other game has that!

Plenty of games do now, they're called roguelikes.

lacks soul
if you're so offended then roguelite is the word, it refers to games that utilize procedural generation to give unique experiences
not every man is a man because they have genitalia nor a woman a woman, it's called nuance, and taking the speakers intended meaning into context

Because braindead fucking subhumans like you don't know the meaning of the word.

Roguelite is better but still retarded.

user even in the link you posted Everspace fills a good deal of the "high value" things. It doesn't have to be turn-based to be a roguelike, calm down and quit being an idiot.

Server's still up for it, there's no excuse

thankfully I dont take part in that type of faggotry on the level of goonsquad cringe, i played modded servers with actual friends so it was a better experience

3030 Deathwar, if you don't mind it being top-down 2D.

>possessing some points does not mean the game is a roguelike
Why are you fucking retards find this concept so hard to understand?
> The canon for Roguelikes is ADOM, Angband, Crawl, Nethack, and Rogue
There, it's really not that hard to get you retarded gimp. I unironically want you cancer to die so the board can be enjoyed by people who actually play video games.

It’s okay that you missed out, but don’t be a faggot because you’re mad about it and had to make do with shitty role play servers, and also don’t be mad about based pasta saving space games after the shit that was RGO and X4

>possessing some points does not mean the game is a roguelike

It literally does, even in the link you posted. You're so stupid you don't even read your own evidence.

Darkstar One. Not as good obviously.

>don’t be mad about based pasta saving space games after the shit that was RGO and X4
you actually think his (your) clone is going to be any good or fun? haha

I copied that from the link I posted you fucking ADHD zoomer underage faggot. Learn to read.

>literally just freelancer
>not fun

>learn to read
>Missing some points does not mean the game is not a roguelike.

You first, aspie.

>missing some points out of the dozen
>GUISE IT HAS PERMADEATH AND RANDOM LEVELS
>DEFO A ROGUELIKE EH
I want to cave your fucking skull in.

it should probably at least have levels, procedural gen, perma death, equipment, and such

It does.

Lol, I doubt you could get out of your wheelchair.

Turn based is one of the main points of the genre since it's not shallow garbage like the indie games labeled as roguelikes and requires actual decisionmaking.

I get around just enough to fuck your mom.

>Turn based is one of the main points of the genre

God I can just smell the tard on you

>I have never played a roguelike
Kill yourself, toddler.

Never. Microsoft doesn't know what to do with its IPs

Some people don't like Freelancer because they can't use their overpriced flightsticks on it. I'm actually curious how those same people play Star Citizen since so much of that game is the FPS portions.

I think they can’t legally use it

Attached: freelancer2.png (1680x1050, 3.34M)

Fuck you for making me take a trip down the memory lane.
I remember coming back to this 5 years ago to check if anyone's alive.

Attached: dub.jpg (1641x921, 208K)

It's over 15 years old.

oh noes he hasn't played the exact same games as you, he's uncultured and needs to be learned

How is Everspace?
I just checked Steam reviews and there are plenty of negative opinions too. Can anyone here say something about it?

Freelancer still has the best flight system out of any space game barring Freespace 2

I found some screenshots from 2009-2010.
I was playing on Discovery back then. I don't think I have any Yea Forumslancer screenshots left.
Fuck.
I'll look around the place if I have anything dated earlier than that.

Attached: scorpion.png (1022x766, 1.35M)

Overrated.
Hours of downtime waiting to get places, combat outcome is basically dictated by levels, levels are locked by plot, areas are locked by plot, the openness is an illusion. Also TRADE LANE DISRUPTED, go waste another few minutes swatting off pests.

He needs to be learned if he's going to run around calling things roguelikes when he doesn't even now what Rogue is.

There's one or two guys on Yea Forums constantly shilling it to high heavens. The reviews are probably more accurate.
Pirate it and find out for yourself.

>those ship textures
Yikes

He should play at least one fucking game from a genre before forming his retarded babby opinion on it.

Good flight system, but it's a roguelike with all the baggage that comes with. Everspace 2 supposedly is doing away with all that.
Why does it feel like a bunch of Freelancer-successors got announced all in a really short timespan anyway?

X-Wing for DOS has more engaging space combat than Freelancer.

You're wrong, but that's okay.

The Star Citizen bubble burst

Played through the vanilla freelancer campaign a week ago. Traded myself to 5 million and retired on manhattan.

Fun game

>when your game is so shit it actively inspires other people to try and make their own
Based Roberts

he can't be that clueless, it'd be like saying a show is like simpsons or like rick and morty but not knowing about those, be probably has zero interest in playing it, sad, but not out of the ordinary, it's very rudimentary and all roguelikes are better than rogue imo
true,
but, besides that what's your favorite roguelikes, for good measure? I like Angband and Dwarf Fortress
the game could be said to be inspirational, which has a good connotation

Attached: fl_titan.jpg (404x329, 11K)

>played the story with Discovery 4.83 before it removed the story
>it cranked up the damage for turrets on capitals into multiple thousands
>mission 4 had cruisers/battleships almost oneshotting you in the cutscene
>that rheinland fleet fight in tau-29
this shit left me scarred for life but in a good way

Currently playing nightstalker's universe mod

Attached: screen7.jpg (1280x960, 280K)

Brogue for its simplicity. Peak roguelike, not cluttered RPG shit like DCSS.

I just could never see the point of most mods, except the ones that added more campaign content.

Why are space game so afraid of Newtonian flight models

You can totally be inspirational through mediocrity.

Try star citizen and tell me how fun that is.

The average consumer is not used to it at all and would have to relearn how to move around.
The average consumer is not used to thinking in three dimensional space.
It doesn't feel like a cool airplane dogfight. (Despite it being pretty cool itself)

Galaxy on Fire 2 is the closest I've played but it's on mobile.

what kind of epic fucking game is this?

The only one I know of like that is Crossfire, and it’s shit

>undock in new york in Crossfire
>right in front of the planet is a giant scrolling 3d wall of text floating in space that tells you all the roleplay rules for the author's dead server

Based, so do i. Glad to see people still sticking around for that one desu

Underspace should be released soonish

Not only that, but they are also replicated rather faithfully as far as the engine allows

There's probably more examples but Chris is such a legendary autist that it's more well known. There are some stuff they cut that I wish they didn't.

I still have the bartender from the monkey planet in one of the nomad systems as my steam avatar.

"Better" is a more of opinion, but not going full on autist space sim made the game far more approachable for sure. Having a proper story was major as well.

I wish it had had the sidequests and the part where you make out with Juni before attacking the dyson sphere

>Download Crossfire

What the fuck is this mod and why is it so brutally difficult? Is this even meant for singleplayer whatsoever?

Is there a way to play Freelancer on wangblows 10? I miss this game, fuck it's so good.

Yes, the mod maker is insane even by mod maker standards and it's a shitty mod.

I downloaded it an abandonwear site and it ran out of the box, resolution was shit but otherwise it was fine.

You basically need the official crack to circumvent disk check which is the real issue on Win10.
the-starport.net/freelancer/download/singlefile.php?cid=1&lid=2649

As well as older .NET Framework, I think.

>dat feel when you STILL can't buy the game anywhere legally in digital form

Thanks frens, Freelancer is fucking dope and the fact that there's nearly 0 games that take advantage of it as a genre is borderline criminal.
I wish Nintendo would play it then give Star Fox the BoTW treatment with Freelancer in mind. Shit would be fucking sick and you all know it.

myabandonware.com/game/freelancer-bbb

w-what happened

Where can I find this game?

Are there any mods that let me freeroam in the story? As soon as I undock from Manhattan I want to be able to go to Rheinland if I so want but I also want to be able to still do the story.

Bonus if there's more content additions ontop of letting me freeroam.

Second best girl.
Well there's not much competition anyway.

Very bottom
>As a final, closing statement we know some of you are wondering about the release. While are working towards the original release date, understand that there is the chance that we miss that window, especially as it nears ever closer. If there’s a choice being delaying it or releasing it in an unfinished state, it’ll be delayed.

The models still look pretty good to be honest. Everything is good enough to stay out of the uncanny valley.

Starlink for Switch (you're welcome)

is Yea Forumslancer still a thing?

yeah true, I just hate the toys-to-life shit added to bleed the consumer dry. Also i don't want to fill my room with fucking figurines

There's a server up but some of the mod links don't work. I think there's another mirror with info on reddit of all places

It runs, but on some newer W10 versions the game won't detect your dedicated GPU no matter what so it will run with your integrated GPU instead and it will be choppy at times.
You will have to stick dgVoodoo2 to it to make it work properly.

Sadly, the same can't be said of Junko. The Asian features just look weird.

Attached: freelancer_junko_zane-pc-games.jpg (620x349, 35K)

Attached: serveimage.png (392x336, 191K)

Yeah but dat ass tho

Thank you both

Can't argue with that.

So long as the dev doesn't go literally insane like that other space dev it's fine.

Reminder that this guy predicted he would release this game around August 2018 (two thousand eighteen) back in 2017/early 2018
Release dates from him mean nothing

I followed Starbound, I'm used to it.

You mean you can't argue with dat.

I backed Star Citizen.

Freelancer was kinda mediocre desu. Flying physics are arcadey and simplistic as fuck. It's fucking boring

>We don't really run this place, but we have an understanding with the people who do.

I've just gotten used to indie devs never meeting release dates. They don't seem to realize that dates are actually deadlines, not estimations.
I'm willing to wait for Freelancer 2

Card?

Attached: Screenshot from 2019-09-23 13-00-51.png (496x241, 128K)

Your rep's no good here.

Freelancer had the most satisfying 3rd person camera I've ever seen in a space shooter. The way it moved around when you turned your ship really made you feel the inertia, even if it was just an illusion. Sadly, no one copied it. Having the camera glued to your ship's add, as everyone else is doing, seem a primitive hack by comparison.

Most fan I had was in modded servers. I played Discovery, as others have mentioned, but also a lot of another small Star Wars mod with some kind of RP forums and rules. I can't remember the name though. I wonder whatever happened to it.

Sounds like FreeWorlds.

Brainlet

I mostly just loved Freelancer for its dead-simple mouse controls. Never seen another space sim that controls that way.

Yeah Freeworlds, by the time they finished it nobody played the game anymore.

From what I've heard, the camera system is actually fairly complicated, it just doesn't seem that way.
Also most space sim games tend to be played in first person and don't give any thought to their third person camera modes. Like X3

I remember joining the official server for it and then getting banned for shooting at an admin, never played it after that

Ahhh the X-clone for noobs, i see.

I remember freelancer servers where admins had special, exclusive ships that nobody else was allowed to use.

X never had good combat, or good writing. Or an interesting world. Or good exploration. Its only strength is the trading and empire building, which is hampered by the everything else.

seeth

I'm not seth.

>Freelancer Crossfire
>Admin has a special base that he and only he can dock at
>it's the super special story base that he makes everyone see when following his fanfic main quest
>can't be reached because it has a shield around it that requires admin-tier weapons to breach
>tfw just modded the game to make normal guns do shitloads of damage and bypassed the shield and stole one of the ships, then got banned

Several tons of loli sex dolls

Isn't that a thing in the Yea Forumslancer mod

Used to play with the flak88 mod
>doesn't add or remove any ships but makes everything that's already on the game flyable, even stations
>removes trade lanes, increases cruise speed
>had "bots", simulating players, can add them as a personal escort too.
>flak cannons for capships, we Battlestar Galactica nao
>can crank the NPC generation to the point a single skirmish of 3vs3 anywhere can spiral out into a full on, 50 ship warzone.
Doing piracy on the independent systems and watching the ship count increase by the minute after taking out a large transport with both police, corp ships and more pirates all around you felt lit af.

That modder did a bunch of 3D renders with Freelancer models, it was cool.

Close, it was anime hug pillows and if you had them in your inventory every single NPC would try and kill you.

Haha epic XD

It was. That whole mod was a different time, and a better time.

Anybody else lose a fuck ton of screenshots to this dying ?

i fucking miss having a clan to roll about with in this game literally getting into trouble with the badmins because we found out how to make mad bank raiding rheinlanders in an outback corridor of space for retarded amounts of loot then the niggers would do it themselves

ayyyyyyyy my nigga

it seemed like an obvious exploit they themselves put into the game to take advantage of to get money "legitimately" becuase those fuckers XGL or w/e there tag was never traded i know because we had a 20 strong clan at that tiem trying to hunt them down and we put the pieces of the puzzle together through stalking and observing

you remember that one boutny hunter dude that was like gregory of the server he took up bounties on people on the forum and always got the kill

>what the fuck is this mod

Goosebumps every time
Exploring the uncharted systems and the criminal systems for the first time as a kid was so memorable

Yea Forumslancer before it made its own mod was that. They got so sick of the roleplay autism that's why they made their own

The Coalition missions are the worst offenders with this.
You fly through empty system to empty system, while being regularly attacked by the Dom Kavash who can one shot you even if you cheese your ship selection.

There is something about that soundtrack as a whole that evokes the infinity of space better than anything I've encountered so far.
youtube.com/watch?v=jieg-7FjMLo

Attached: 1394059561991.jpg (1100x1470, 388K)

I remember the dev saying how he wanted players to feel like Christopher Columbus on how it would take a super long time to fly anywhere.

>freelancer alpha one dash one, you're cleared for launch, good luck out there.
Ultramegacomfykino

is that the brunhild from logh?

Attached: flat,1000x1000,075,f.jpg (1000x524, 85K)

>wants players to feel like Columbus
>can't conquer native peoples and enslave their underage women as sex dolls

A swing and a miss

>when you think you're hot shit after beating the game but elite hessians, corsairs, outcasts and bounty hunters wreck your shit

It's the little things. Like the constant chatter between ships you hear whenever you fly in a populated area.

I dont wanna end up a corpse before my time because you were daydreaming!

The halting enunciation of ALPHA. ONE. DASH. ONE. always made me wonder if there weren't supposed to be more callsigns, it sounds canned

It is, Chris implemented this system where the AI would construct sentences using cut up voice clips to respond to the player, but that was later cut out when he got taken off the project and the shitty voice clips remained.
Its hilarious because it would have taken up less space and been less work to just record each individual line in full rather than doing Chris' dumb idea.

>and you can't buy a new ship because by making the anubis super cheap it barely covers the costs of any of the higher level ships

That wouldn't have been such a bad idea, had the systems been interesting.
They are all drab, empty systems with garbage music and a boring endgoal.
It gets slightly better once you reach the Dom Kavash chapter, with slightly less empty flying.
Instead however, you get legions of capital ships blocking your entrance and exit.
Not to mention that in the end, SWAT had the audacity to kill Orillion.

No idea. Stern looks a bit different.

It's not actually cut exactly for callsigns. In multiplayer the first player to login gets to be Alpha one dash one, then the next player is one-dash two and so on, and it just goes down the list.

>when you finally get that Sabre with CODENAME weapons and nothing can touch you
Was fun for 5 mins until I realised there was nothing left to do and then I cried

Pretty sure he and pasta are working on underspace together

All of the voice clips are cut up not just the callsigns
When you talk to people on stations and they're like "Hey there freelancer, I work for the -*LIBERTY ROGUES*- we dont own this base, but we have an "understanding" with the people who do"

The whole mod kind of reminds me of Half Life 2's cinematic mod. Just idiotic changes that someone thought were better all thrown together with no thought.

FULLY

>sol system is 1000000000x the size of every other system
>got in the tradelane to mars, was taking ages and I thought something was broken so I exited the tradelane, realised I was about 4 hours in real time away from the entrance to the system
>uninstalled

Shattered Worlds was good
>focuses on graphical enhancements and rebalancing all ships to be viable rather than anything else

MODELED JUMPHOLES

There is another way to exit the system, and it's an anomaly that is something like 300-400k away from the nearest base.
No tradelanes to that one of course, you are forced to make the entire trip on cruise.
This mod is such hot garbage, we could complain for hours.

Its fun to complain, I have a weird nostalgia for all these shitty mods I used to play.

I remember the author going ballistic over content theft, but then a bunch of the models in the mod were ripped from an obscure space RTS

Modder is an hypocritical narcissus, what else is new.

That clone is the closest there is to a modern freelancer, since Starpoint Gemini 3 just looks awkward

Didnt he have homeworld ships in it? Kek

FULLY MODELED BLOOM also works

I think he tried to ddos Yea Forumslancer but failed

Game was fun as fuck.

He also had Freespace ships I believe, not to mention that he just ripped the ships from Starlancer

I tried it in during the early iterations of arena commander when they were planning individual working thrusters on every axis, I remember the act of flying the ship being much more fun than elite even at that early stage. I'm assuming they toned that down and made it like every other flight game at this point.

It feels like a slower garbage Freelancer, and Elite isn't exactly a high bar.

I remember playing on the original server for it, it was the only time I played on an active Freelancer server and it was great

Star citizen feels like freelancer? Ok so you haven't played it then?
Freelancer is barely even a space sim, you're a glorified mouse cursor.

I have, I was one of the earliest backers. Star Citizen fags don't like to admit that their game flies like a much worse Freelancer, when it's funny that it does.

>is barely even a space sim, you're a glorified mouse cursor
And yet that's what makes it so much better.

It's a good game

I don't care all that much about starcitizen, it's going to be shit on release, I'm just saying the flight controls felt pretty interesting when I played it a while back. I have no idea where you're coming from comparing it to freelancer because it's barely even the same genre when talking gameplay mechanics.

Well you obviously don't care for space sims then which is fine but that's too simple for my taste.

>Well you obviously don't care for space sims
I only care for the good ones.

At least Freelancer came out.

Attached: 1553272697775.jpg (566x604, 41K)

Freelancer is good because it throws out all the things that open world space sims normally have, because as it turns out those things are fucking terrible.

This is like someone who only appreciates burnout talking shit about people who like GT/ Forza and acting superior about it. You just don't appreciate the more realistic side of things, it's got nothing to do with quality.

It has everything to do with quality, because those "more realistic" ones are garbage.

Attached: serveimage.png (1100x550, 238K)

>tfw exploring the far nether regions of known space for rebel ports and high level gear

Attached: tumblr_inline_nbxhlvf7HW1seskow.gif (400x170, 556K)

>compares Star Citizen to GT or Forza
Wew lad that's some wishful thinking. Maybe there could be a good realistic implementation of spaceflight in a space sim, but SC sure as fuck isn't a shining example of anything.

Freelancer's biggest advantage was that it made an active effort to make space interesting. Not only did it place pieces that encouraged exploration but it rewarded you for doing so.

it would be a lot better if it didn't have those stupid breaks in the story all the time

Who said anything about quality? GT was shit for many years, I'm just talking about there being a vast distinction in what these games are trying to do mechanically. The other retard was acting like a arbiter of taste when he only plays arcade games.

>full on autism
That would be EVE.
X is tame in comparison, but yeah, it's not "arcadey" like Freelancer.

Star Citizen?

Just kidding even if it comes out they are going full Second Life)

Attached: Smug_lain.png (1520x855, 771K)

I mean in terms of combat it basically is, just with less weapon and combat variety.

Theres no current branch capable of reliably profiting from it.

The scope would have to be too large to handle without a budget that far exceeds its expected margins.

>realistic implementation of spaceflight

What does this even mean? Humanity hasn't even traveled to nearby planets outside unmanned spacecraft slingshotting via Jupiter.

It wasn't that big of a game user. If a 3 man team can remake it in unity a AAA studio can pump out one no problem

I wish EA could remaster the entire franchise

SC has literally ONE system right now.
Freelancer was cool because you could go to new places and find stuff. The story was kinda tropey but at least it had one.

I feel you brother

A remake is possible. But the expected audience is still minuscule.

Game is too niche to sell to normies. So the scope would have to be big enough to entice a large enough amount of the "gamer" audience.
Very unlikely we will see anything happen to this IP. Literally too good for this world.

Some user occasionally posts about his not!Freelancer game on /agdg/.

>alpha build
user that wasn't even an alpha build. That was some proof of concept tech demo stuff and a prerendered cutscene to show to microsoft.
There was basically no game.

Its TRAINWIZ you newfag

Yeah that's Underspace, it's been mentioned.

I'm convinced its only a matter of time till we get a decent indie game with that formula, too many people want it to happen on both the consumer and dev side and its relatively easy to make a decent quality one on a small budget.

House of the Dying Sun?

Not to mention that it was supposed to be an xbox title

>freelancer style game in the homeworld universe
Eh? Eh?

Since we're arguing about simulators, which space game has the most simtism?
Which space game has the dumbest fun?
Which space game is the ideal balance of both?

Attached: Untitled.png (1080x1080, 963K)

If you are a spaceshipfag, try Avorion, i spend most of my time just building ships there.

I donated to SC back in 2012 because Chris lied on the kickstarter video and said it was going to be Freelancer 2

>Which game has the most simtism?
Elite 2 and 3.

It doesn't really lend itself too well to fighter stuff I think.

even more than something like Kerbal Space Program?

The ideal balance is Freelancer, its the perfect formula

only capital ships can use a hyperdrive so not without some retcons

I honestly forgot KSP even existed as I have never played it.

>scams dont count
But I guess id be naive to believe freelancer 2 would be devoid of the issues that plague modern gaming.

If you think about it Freelancer is ideal for the modern audience. It's a great game but the open world aspect is fairly shallow and the missions are repetitive, plus it has light RPG elements.
Throw in some microtransactions and you'd have yourself an ubisoft game.

we saw some hyperdrive gate thing in the new trailer so just have gates like in Freelancer

I was really excited for that game because it was one of the few indie space "sims" with a nice aesthetic, most of them feel like they were made by autistic german programmers.

I heard it was super short though and that it handles like a floating gun so I lost interest.

It plays great but it is super super short
the real sad loss was that one game that was a space RTS where you actually walked around your bridge to play it

Dev cut his game down to a bare minimum because his only feedback in development was tired journalists playing five minute demos at VR trade conventions.
desu the writing was on the wall when he inverted the plot and stopped calling it Enemy Starfighter

The original promise of star citizen was an actual space sim and made about 10mil off the back of enthusiasts, everyone after that just wanted to live in a starwars game and got excited by the fps gameplay and all the ancillary shit.

You people talk too much, play the game already.

Attached: Freelancer Screenshot 2019.09.23 - 16.18.25.44.png (1920x1080, 1.4M)

seems weird he would stop at that point since he figured out all the difficult/ important stuff and just had to make more content.

That is too many nanobots and shield batteries young man.

Content is the longest part of gamedev.

The switch from procedurally generated fights to hand arranged fleets really sucked the wind out of his sails.

It's fun at first but then you realize there's literally nothing to do and nothing to find.

>crossfire
why would you torture yourself like this

Isn't that Nightstalkers?
There's more than one mod that has Earth as a system. Yet for some reason only Yea Forumslancer was the one that acknowledged that earth was blown up in Freelancer canon

You ain't seen nothing yet.

Dear God no, it's Nightstalker's.

Think I was doing diamond runs from New Berlin to Manhattan or something back in the day. Even drew a big jump hole map on poster paper.

Using a freighter on the campaign was rather silly, but it worked.

Discovery is a great mod to play LAN. You get almost none of the forced RP, and you get to use all the content on the mod at your leisure. And it has a lot of it, but not in the way Crossfire forced it down your throat. Instead, almost everything new fits thematically into the Freelancer universe. Shame for the capship balance though

What the fuck, there are Red Hessian battleships now?
Fuck, it's been so long.

Red Hessians have an entire ship line.
They need it to fight the Corsairs, who have their own. The Coalition has a shipline too, and it's fun seeing Coalitions and Hessians work together.

I don't want to let go.

>first time in the giant creepy tunnel system which looked sorta like the pic, but with spiky club-like asteroids and monkey planets
>FUCKING NOMADS EVERYWHERE
>everything seems so detached and unusual compared to the core worlds
FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK
I haven't gotten that feel of wandering into the handcrafted unknown again and I desperately wish for it. Procedurally generated shit doesn't do it for me.

Attached: tunnel.jpg (750x1039, 993K)

The other Unknown system is beautiful too.
It has less content, but the huge purple nebula covering the screen was absolutely stunning. So few games do scale that feels right, and Freelancer was one of them.

I remember finding the pink system too.
It really felt like a "I shouldn't be here" place and it didn't really do anything to be creepier than others but by fucking jesus it was spooky.
Just the radiation damage blip and the occasional ayys.

Funnily enough the closest I've got to this feel again was in the Tree of Savior closed beta when you could run to locations which weren't used yet, which were eerily empty, had lv80-100+ mobs which ignored you and nothing but silence.

All we wanted was freelancer with mods...

Freelancer's skybox artwork was stunning in general.
I absolutely loved how the skybox would change depending on which of the the big nebulae you approached. Seeing the orange Walker nebula slowly engulf the screen was top kino

The one that really stuck with me for a while was one of the Tau systems in the story where you exit the jumphole looking at the Barrier nebula and then you realize you're right in the literal middle of it and it's real fucking comfy.

Attached: Tau.png (1016x751, 1.27M)

Now this is a trade.

Attached: Freelancer Screenshot 2019.09.23 - 18.05.27.11.png (1920x1080, 2.13M)

>leave the asteroid field
>suddenly a Rheinland battleship, two cruisers and some gunboats ambush you
That was some top shit.

Out of the Rheinland fuckery I popped a solid boner during the mission when you get the girl scientist and then you find two defectors and a battleship camping the Leeds jumphole.
Then the two cunts use the cloak to sneak in some torpedoes and do a victory lap above it with some sweet fucking music playing.
The campaign in this game really left a lot of memorable "oh fuck" moments for me.

I agree he is a faggot. He deleted a thread on steam critising the fact that it's alot like Freelancer recreated in Unity.

I remember that thread, it was a thread outright accusing him of stealing assets but when asked for proof they kept moving the goalposts. You're the faggot here.

All of that kino was amplified by the sound design too.
In the scene you are referring to, you can hear all the warnings increasingly blare on the Rheinland battleship as it gets it's shit pushed in by the two defectors.

>remaking Freelancer, a game that's long dead
>people pissed off because somehow reviving a dead game is a bad thing
God I've forgotten how cancerous that whole community is

The soundtrack also helps.

Freelancer 2 of course

It was good. I really wanted to like online rp mods of this such as discovery but after 2 hours of play you realize everyone was just down low farming experiment named guns and metagaming up the ass on a don't ask don't tell system.

Why can't there be a more purist server where everything is tweaked so nothing is too OP, just sidegraded and no shield has a recharge higher than single unit lowest dps (except capitals/frigate etc)

I still had fun outrunning OP as fuck outcast players while mining, but I don't remember a single decent fight on that entire server. It was just outcasts with experiment guns ganking miners or boomers in capitals talking shit then running away from each other.

what game in the webm

But he's never hidden the fact that it's a Freelancer clone. What actually happened user?

Mission 4 was the best mission honestly
>the sudden shift to having to flee absolutely everything
>benford station's destruction
>lane hacker rescue

Amen to that. Hearing this after a hard mission was the most relieving shit ever.

>tfw you can't hear the captain of the Unity's voice over all the destruction

Attached: 1555207530077.png (734x557, 418K)

I've also got some solid shivers from the mission where you have to destroy a shipyard with Nomad battleships in a minefield nebula in Rheinland, as well as despair when you just stop dealing any fucking damage at some point and shit just keeps getting worse as everyone's dying.
Von Claussen(?) was a pretty cool dude.

No, I deleted that thread because you and your roleplay buddies came in saying that the entire game was just a Freelancer mod in Freelancer's engine using stolen assets and then tried to shill the Discovery server, and when asked for proof of any sort of theft you just kept dodging the question.

Attached: ForwardCannons.webm (1600x900, 2.35M)

Tobias was better, Von Claussen came in too late to make an impression.

howard's pet project to remaster WC1

it's surprising how much of it all came about after Roberts left too.

Tobias was a fucking legend, but I don't think there's a main story character in Freelancer I actively dislike.
I really like Von Claussen's voice for the most part, even with the turbo exaggerated accent it felt, I don't know, stylish?
Maybe I just was really impressionable when I was younger.

you the underspace dev?

As ambitious as he was, his autism was actively hindering the game.

Chris is that friend who tells you about his videogame idea and keeps going "DUDE WOULDN'T IT BE COOL IF WE HAD X FEATURE" even if it's totally ridiculous or unfeasible. The difference now is that he has total control so nobody can say no to him.

>mfw Nomad Lair mission with the power cell
>this shit blaring youtube.com/watch?v=M_GU-tEMQhU
>screen is fucking flooded with red markers
>the timer bot calmly reading the amount of minutes left

Attached: 1448045607517.jpg (363x333, 49K)

Yes. I've never hidden the inspirations that inspired the game in the first place. You could, with enough effort, mod Freelancer into Underspace. You should not obviously, because that would most likely violate some sort of copyright law if Microsoft actually acknowledged the existence of Freelancer beyond sending you free copies if you say you lost your disk, but you could. Understand?

Don't tell me you didn't shit your pants when you first saw the gigantic wall.

I probably spent around 2 hours if not more just sitting in the Hispania wreck in Omicron Alpha poking the nose out of various entrances of the thing.
Comfy as fuck.

Because Braben has a vision

Oh absolutely.

The last time I saw your game the camera system was really close, it didn't have the feeling of inertia that makes Freelancer's camera feel so good. Will you ever fix that?

The whole Hispania systems were just kino
>the wreck
>the lore
>those horrifying mass graves of corsair and outcast pilots where creepy ambient sound plays before nomads appear and assrape your anubis because you didn't buy a proper VHF

Wing Commander Privateer

Tachyon: The Fringe

FreeSpace 2 if you just want space fighter combat without the trading stuff

There's an old freeware game called Vega Strike, but I never played much of it, so I don't know how good it is. I first heard about it because it had two mods that basically ported Wing Commander Privateer into its engine.

There's also the Evochron series.

I remember feeling incredibly smart when I got to the story systems in Discovery and figured out you could get inside the Dyson Sphere by trying to dock with the big nomad gate leading back, then selecting the sphere entrance and pressing docking again and to my horror and surprise it actually worked.
I miss this fucking game so bad.
I'll probably do an another story playthrough or fuck around some modded server blind.

Attached: Dock.png (1014x555, 1.53M)

Yes, I added that last month and fixed up the bits that weren't working just right a few days ago.

Discovery's hidden nomad systems were dang neat, all things considered. That nomad homeworld with its own tradelanes is a great setpiece.

Attached: UnderspaceLooseCamera.webm (1600x900, 2.86M)

>3030 Deathwar
I still can't believe that a game actually exists with that title. It sounds like a fake video game that a kid on a sitcom talks about playing.

You haven't browsed the indie space games on Steam then.

Because it isn't conducive to dogfighting. Realistic space combat would be quite boring to play.
