Also, this was in a low-paying field, and had a very low bar for skill required which was most often filled with people looking for a job on the side, or looking for something much better. Nine out of ten cases, any new employee was almost too retarded to make the cut in the US Army, and of the rare gem we found, they tended to leave quickly for better pastures in under a month. I simply cannot understand how some companies/employers can shoot themselves in the foot that much.

Coming in early and staying late was a good way to make sure things got done on time when order volume unexpectedly rose, and they never complained if the volume was low and you just did your regular shift and chilled out for a couple hours in the lounge. No unionized workplace operates that way.

Now, from experience with my job in big corporate, it's when floor managers are lorded by over lazy department managers who have inattentive regional managers above them, the hierarchy starts to fall apart and the underlings get chopped for bad decisions from on high.

I figured it out. 30 minutes is 1/48th of a day. Multiply that by 365 days a year. Multiply that by 3 for each 8 hour work shift in a day and you get 22.8125 round up and you get 23. Also also, you can't shop out of your own state for health insurance so competition among providers is very limited. Finally, the combination of talent, sterile equipment and procedures, and low-demand drugs are also going to be some level of expensive.

If you want to let a contract expire (meaning it has a set end date) you usually only have to inform the employee a few weeks in advance that you have no intention of prolonging the contract. If the employee has a contract without defined end date, a few months notice is required.
