Koopas are Bowser's black magic army. Bricks are actually citizens of Mushroom Kingdom.
I remember Goombas being Mushroom Kingdom army, but switched and joined Bowser's army and started attacking Mushroom Kingdom, but it's not in the manual.

The GBA remake explained the Mario Koopa masks but not any of the other weird changes, like the pumpkins or pidgit bills. Also, I think that's the only Mario game that gives a satisfying reward for 100% it or doing a special challenge mode or whatever. Fuck the good noodle stars they give you in current games, and fuck the golden statue from NSMB 2
