It's a lot simpler than it sounds actually. Japanese grammar is relatively simple and structured, unlike English where there's twenty different ways to construct sentences that essentially say the same thing. The complexity of Japanese comes from their usage of 3 different writing systems at the same time as well as kanji in general, but once you've memorised the kana and figured out how to efficiently search kanji in the dictionary it becomes a matter of just expanding your vocabulary. A formal education in Chinese probably helped too.
