RE4
First chapter of Evil Within was a wild ride. But I guess the actual opening level is the one with the chainsaw guy.
Pretty amazing too.
MGSV
No doubt
The first level of Timesplitters 2 on hard is pretty great. How it transitions from stealth to gunfights with security to a zombie outbreak.
I hope you're joking user.
Central Yharnam
You mean the one where you hobble around like a cripple for half an hour and can barely do anything?
RE4
DMC3
God of war 2
You gonna make a youtube top 14 list faggot?
Or an article on shitaku?
wasted potential of the century for sure
God i hated this fucking trash when i first played it but replaying it recently is a monumental task
Its so fucking boring and un-ending with its unskippable cutscenes, tutorials and walking sections
I had an easier time replaying ffxiii than this shit
Midgar unironically
JUST UHP EEHEAD EES THAH VEELLAGE
Any first level that is not infested with cutscenes and actually lets me play the fucking game.
MGS2 Tanker, nothing comes close.
Fuck you. I had to keep trying again and again for the mission objective of not getting hit against Volgin. This shit was a slog.
based
The thread said best you retard
This and the first level of Adventure 1 are kino almost every first level of sonic games are a bladt to play actually

Mombasa Streets in ODST
Undead Asylum
Dead Space 2
Golden sun opening was quite good.
The series rapidly evolved into shit, but the opening cinematic and mysterious tutorial of Kingdom Hearts is pretty iconic, in my opinion.
Chrono Cross doesn't belong, it's horribly boring. Replace it with the original Prey
Central Yharnam was very good.
The spectacle is fantasic, but it's not very fun to play. And the game makes you do it twice to get the last ending. Stupid.
there are more vidya out there than just universally worshipped mainstream console games that already appear on every other top ten game list.
very safe, a lot of repetition, not even that good.
SA2, City Escape is fucking kino.
>CTRL+F
>No City Escape
What the fuck is WRONG with you?
At the time, riding the train into Black Mesa or swimming over to enter Rapture were great
But are those the first level or a playable introduction?
Post a link of your favorite intro then faggot, i'm going to get rid of Chrono Cross
The first dungeon in Labyrinth of Refrain is great.
Shame about the rest of the dungeons in that game.
You mean Ground Zeroes
generic consoletard list
Iconic.
...
Good shit bredde
Don't care PC fag
Metroid Prime on Frigate Orpheon.
ddda
I'm so glad no one has said Megaman X, considering how that egoraptor video props it up. I've yet to make it through MMX be sure the level design is terrible and boring and only got good in X2 and X3.
I like this post in context with the two posts RIGHT before it.
How high should Sonic Adventure be on the list
Silent Hill 2
I'd say City Escape is an A+ tier opening stage, It does everything an opening stage should do.
I think objectively Liberty Island is one of the best opening levels ever, no list ought to leave it out. Personally I like Planescape's Mortuary, Abe's Oddysee also has an excellent opening level. REmake's is also a lot better than re4's
Bioshock & Bioshock Infinite both belong in the top 10
I'd put it around 4th to 5th, maybe 6th
Syphon filter 3d opening level was kino af when i was a 7 year old kid
If only the hospital sequence would have been an actual level instead of a corridor...
Unpopular opinion but the opening level in Shantae and the Pirate's Curse is one of my absolute favorites.
>immediate jump into gameplay with no tutorial
>entire city is exploding and townsfolk are running from the direction you're going
>youtube.com
Half Genie Hero went for the same feel but I think PC got it juuuust right.
I agree, it was intense and roped me into the game.
How about best third level?
Bioshock 1
metal gear rising
you fight ray, chase sundowner and get your ass kicked by Sam
I literally have started a new game several times over just to hear the intro cutscene and experience that first stretch leading into the first Meeting With Kain.
World of Warcraft undead starting area
mgs:2 opening was better
this, Blood Omen also has a great opening.
God of War 2 and 3
The music alone makes it a billion times better than any game you like.
Great Plateau in BotW
Especially when taking into consideration the last 3D Zelda was Skyward Sword and before that, Twilight Princess which have the most slow paced and boring intros to a Zelda game ever
kino
wait a second...that card...
...
Can we count the fight on the falling clock tower in bayoneta as the opening level
MegaMan X
stop trying to get Yea Forums to make your Youtube videos for you, fag
>Starts your path
youtube.com
>that framerate
That was so awkward though with the exposition dump
It's a bad false start
I fucking love Bayonetta, but no not really, honestly the version of that in 2 was better, even if it was misleading
The dialogue for the memes but the actual level is shit. It's more like watching a B action movie that you happen to be a part of.
Kingdom Hearts II
grinding odd jobs and investigating "wonders" for 2+ hours isn't fun.
The music was unforgettable
MGSV. Shame the rest of the game was garbage.
Tutorial Island
youtube.com
This level is super comfy
>mfw I was 11 years old in 2001 and my younger cousin came over and played City Escape at least ten times in a row
>tfw when you can't even blame him for doing so
Sonic Team knew what they were doing with that level. The helicopter escape into snowboarding into grinding rails, finally escaping a giant runaway semi-truck? That shit was like the purest cocaine for a pre-teen kid. This fat fuck foster kid sat on my Dreamcast and ruined the disc forever, sometimes I think about buying a new one. SA2 was the bomb.
good
^ all shit"
/thread
>opening tutorial is literally nothing like the rest of the game
Contra 3
Contra: Hard Corps
Contra: Shattered Soldier
BASED
>Objective: Punish the Evil Merchant!
>youtube.com
plebs hate liberty island but it's the perfect microcosm and sandbox of everything good and special about Deus Ex. Perfect opening to a game.
Silent Cartographer
Halo: CE Demo
doesn't count, but a kino level nonetheless
1-1
minecraft
I don't like the start of Ocarina of Time, it's slow, full of unskippable text and honestly, kind of redundant.
i realized this as i was about to post hence why i put demo
The only bad thing about Megaman X intro stage is that you don't have the dash, which makes sense for the narrative but... I find the intro stages in X2, X3 and X4 more fun to play.
It's fun the first time but it's so fucking tedious going through it the second time.
Why did they take it away
Not epic enough. Isn't fighting a dragon in a cave so much cooler and more action packed!?!?!
That's the problem with Bethesda, they don't know dick about decent game design and do this in all their games, starting with Oblivion.
Morrowind took 2 minutes and it was a quick stat set up. Oblivion dragged on with story bullshit, but it was the first time so whatever, its excusable. They did it again with Fallout 3, now its annoying. Obsidian made New Vegas and they took it back to the Morrowind style opening, a skippable story cutscene, and a quick stat set up that takes a couple minutes. Then Bethesda came back with F4 and made another forced "emotional" story opening.
It's truly the worst thing ever, and if they do it to TESVI (they will) I'll be pissed. God I hate Bethesda.
Without question the best is RE4 leading up to the first village encounter. Absolute perfection will never be topped.
Prey (the original) has a great opening. A drunken bar fight and then getting abducted. It was awesome.
It's a great game but the opening level is "okay" at best.
By far Sonic the Hedgehog. Green Hill Zone is like the first thing that will be on your mind if you mention (good) Sonic shit. And the song is stuck in every player's heads, but not in annoying way, you can hear it in your mind right now that I mentioned it. The level is designed flawlessly too, not only it showcases, boasts and sells you on Sonic's speed, it is also designed to teach you about the game's physics. Like, for example, remember how near the end of the level you need to roll into a ball and dash through giant hole only to build up speed and then jump into the air? That taught you that the game had momentum, it had fucking physics. And many more little moments like that that don't outright tell you what you taught, but your brain picked up on it.
The second best opening level in my mind is Ace Attorney. It does things very similarly to Sonic too, in that I don't know a single person who isn't sold on game's humor, charm and courtroom cross-examinations after trying it. It doesn't give you everything the games are about as it doesn't introduce Investigation sections (which in my opinion are underrated), but it can't be a more perfect introduction to the entire series.
super mario rpg
Man, this game is weird, but not in a good way. It's weird in that it had weirdest, most eyebrow raising opening to a ridiculous story, and it still somehow managed to push it too far and become just hard to buy into once aliens were introduced. You'd have to try really hard to fail at storytelling to start the game weird and only get worse as it gets weirder. It'd be like Araki failing to sell people on stands.
Just wait for him to start pushing you to shoot. Then reload when he backs off. You have to be mentally disabled to not realize that.
Kino
lol
>cutscenes layered on cutscenes breaking the gameplay flow
>unskippable slow walking segments
>wears out its welcome way too fast
>HAVE TO DO IT AGAIN WITH EVERYTHING THE EXACT SAME TO UNLOCK THE REAL ENDING
Fuck you Kojima for putting me through this
It’s kino
>no tutorial
>just drop you into the game
What a trial by fire.
Thank the lord they introduced the Tutorial scenario in File #2 as to not scare people off from playing the actual game.
I just want more garfield info because I am excited to see how they Fuck it up
Its been years they should be ready to show something by now
That's why it's such a good opener. It sells you the game, only for you to find out 3 hours later that it's actually fucking shit.
But the memories of playing through that and wondering just how much a difference all these actions I was taking would make will never be gone from my mind. Even if none of it made a difference.
Prey (2017)
Resident Evil 4
Super Mario Bros.
TMNT Turtles in Time
Good only for first playthrough (but it really was kino for the first time)
This but unironically, the game was amazing
nigga which smt is this
