SimCity 4 is the game that got me into sim/management games.
All I would want out of a modern city building game is just SimCity 4 but with better AI, multiplayer, and a region terraforming mode.

Don't really get this. Doom's "glory days" were mostly the result of the community's support of the series and the content they created. Considering we still get quality wads and gameplay mods released every year, I don't really see how the glory days are over.

I mean, I can understand not being a fan of Doom 2016 or Eternal, but those games existing doesn't take away the near-endless amount of classic Doom content that's available to play around with.

Paper Mario has exceeded its past iterations in a few ways. The key thing is what it is best at (level design, interactivity, art style, dialogue/humour and cutscene quality) are different to what the previous were best at.

You mean in-battle gameplay but that isn't the case. It's rebalanced the attacks and intrduced new enemy types like stacks in order to make it so there's a situation where each attack is useful. In Sticker Star the hopslippers just demolished everything even bosses. The gameplay extends to both in and out of battle. Color Splash has a lot of variety and interactivity, most locations have a mechanic unique to them and have well thought out level design/shapes.

I think the main only reason the gameplay gets attacked is because it's the "wrong gameplay" in the eyes of some. Diehard fans of TTYD aren't going to admit the gameplay is good, because it would be admitting that the partner characters aren't necessary.
