The jump from before the 1 year delay to the network test was enormous. Used to be that drain attacks were the only way to get ichor, thus making gifts all but worthless. Now gifts are a lot more useful. And they changed the blood veils to look slightly less like God Eaters.

You can change most of the controls, but R2 is the definite "Gift" button. I'd recommend just learning how to use the square and triangle buttons to attack. Makes things less awkward for when you want to mix in combo drains and the like.

Can't play the demo but I can already tell I'll like straight swords and bayonets the most. The only reason I enjoy Ultra Greatswords in Dark Souls is because you can fling enemies halfway across the map with them. But the lower hitstun and the larger number of enemies make this not a viable option in Code Vein.
I like the Lost Bardiche and Sunset Halberd. Feels more satisfying, and they have access to a lot of one-handed sword gifts

With a lot of those fights though, the arena is as much of part of the encounter as the boss itself, sometimes to the point of being a glorified puzzle like storm king or dragon god. The encounter with Micolash wouldn’t work without obfuscating hallways for him to run around in, and still ultimately ends in a direct confrontation in a square arena.
You can still make an aesthetically interesting boss arena that’s just a broad, vaguely squarish or round shape when boiled down. It’s generally better that way, because when you try to put a combat skill test in a nonstandard arena you get shit like the maneaters, centipede demon, and capra demon. I haven’t played DS3, but I think the only time it really worked out was Gascoigne.

Classes don't matter, you can pretty much just pick whatever you want. Always Always go for gifts, especially long ranged gifts.
It's a sort of "build a class". Lots of variety with Gifts and stuff.
Her hitboxes on all her attacks are impressive, if not downright bullshit. You have to play very, very cautiously against her solo. Blocking can help but isn't ideal. Shifting Hollow is never a bad idea. She's just an extremely punishing boss but she is beatable solo without overleveling, you just gotta be real patient. I saw this guy do a pretty good job, even if he does just use projectiles.

Two of them are bullshit; the rest are just fine. The bullshit ones are the one that chases (not because it chases, but because it brings up a hitbox behind her for no reason), and the fat AoE because it's just fuck-you huge. Neither are unavoidable though, so keep at it
I hope the multiplayer rewards list is more fleshed out in the full release. I like the idea of getting gifts in exchange for succeeding at bosses. Hopefully it encourages more people to play together.

That's pretty much how the Depths in the demo panned out. Two moderately leveled players with +6 greatswords can pretty much just stun every boss into oblivion.
Only one gift can be gained in the demo from them, hopefully more in the full release.

Also the 'last game was bad so next game is bad too' argument is one of the most brain dead criticisms you can make.
Not a Surge fan, but Code Vein indeed feels floaty to me. There's something about the character's running animation that feels off. Also the combats have interesting mechanics but the feeling just isn't there. It's like ennemies just absorb the hits instead of suffering from them. Like weapons have no weight at all, even the bigger ones. After Sekiro and other FromSoft games, it really doesn't shine on that part. But maybe people used to God Eater will be less triggered.

Basically, yes. That thread was posted concurrently with two CV threads and was tanking in the catalog while both CV threads outlived it.
Deck13 created a dilemma for themselves by having a release date so close to another soulsclone. Code Vein had a lot to prove between being a new IP and suffering so many delayed release dates. Releasing a demo did a lot to show the finished product as well as displaying confidence that people will put $60 down on it on release. The Surge 2 on the other hand benefits from not having a demo, because if they had one then people will realize they haven't actually made a substantially different or better game, and have instead opted to invest in a billion flashy gameplay trailers on YT and the same marketer threads they wasted money on for LotF and Surge. However at the end of the day having a demo looks a hell of a lot better than not. This is typical Deck13 and hopefully people have finally woken up to their junk.

Zweihander is clearly slower than other weapons, but bigger range. You can easily see it's slower and does less hits in the same time frame. Also uses more stamina per swing. Does more damage each hit tho.

I enjoy fights that aren't just wailing on the boss. Having variety break the monotony of the game which is one of the reasons why I hate DaS1-2. Bed of Chaos was puzzle but implemented in the worst way; if you need to have save points for a boss during a game like this, then you're doing it wrong. Enviornments aren't just a place to fight but a backdrop to a climax. It should be memorable. All the areas in the demo were very bland, even for Oliver. I couldn't tell you what the Blade Bearer's setting looked like and I've already played that boss several times more than Mergo or Old Hero.

I'm going through with a new character but not using a partner this time, and even with a similar build as last time, what once took out half the final boss's hp now takes about 10% of his health, he doesn't stagger as easy, and it seems like I die twice as fast.

It makes perfect sense. Even reducing down to Chalice Dungeons, there is a good variety of arenas. The final boss's arena is memorable even though it's just a small detail because you've been in that room quite a few times by then.

There's Plasma Roar, Indra Coil, Blast Bolt and Fourfold Verdict. Chances are they used one of the first two and the orbs from the second landed at the same time.
Indra Coil doesn't actually seem that strong for the cost and cast time, at least not on the training dummy. Plasma Roar and Blast Bolt beat it in both damage and speed.

Indra's Coil is has a large AoE, so it's good against large groups of enemies

I find Boobie Bearer easier than Queen's Knight. No spinny shit, easier to stagger even in her 2nd form, plus her forward thrust is much easier to anticipate. The only thing that gets me is her fire pillars but the game literally gifts you a fire resistance skill.

Lots of build variety and cool spells. Heavy emphasis on using said spells since mana is restored by attacking.
It has soulslike combat with some unique mechanics that I think are worth checking out. It is also an ARPG like souls, but it tips the scales between A and RPG a little more to the latter than souls does with how skills ("gifts") are equipped and executed.
Imagine you could play as a mage but you weren't locked to having to press up to cycle through spells, you didn't have to claw, it feels like DS2, Levels only give you HP and stamina, imagine rally from BB but it fuels your FP/magic and you rally with every attack, and no PvP.

As for ichor usage... Just recover ichor. Get used to that mechanic. Use melee attacks and parries to keep it up.

Blocking and parrying also recovers ichor. Blade Bearer basically hands you ichor once you learn a specific method of parrying her.

Perfect parry timing every time. Interrupts her combo and gives you some delicious ichor for you to instantly use with a hard-hitting gift. I like Bolt Blast and Swallow Cutter. If you're particularly low on ichor you can just get a regular swing in.

I love the Ichor system so much. Encourages you to be aggressive, enables you to use spells as often as you want, rewards parrying and shit. It's great.

They're nice enough if you want less commitment to attacks. The only weapons that don't feel good are the polearms. They're in the worst possible middleground of feeling too slow compared to lighter weapons, but not fast or strong enough to be worth using over a heavy one. They don't even get any cheesy pokes and thrusts or room clearing sweeps, their range seems gimped as hell. I hope the two in the demo are just bad first impressions.

But to answer your question, my setup currently using a greatsword and two heavy hiting magic spells does some real tasty damage on both physical and magical sides of the coin. So far the differences between going full focus on one or the other has shown to be pretty negligible.

Yes, and Souls games are the reason I bring this up in the first place. For example, if you want to go magic, you should focus completely on magic. In certain games, if you don't put 90% of your levels into magic then it just feels like a waste of time. You have to become a glass cannon for it to have the proper impact.

Well one thing you can do is just try out a setup and if you think it's too weak, switch to another one. The beauty of this game is you don't have to commit to a build; you just swap out your code and veil any time you want.
Aset + Night Hawk is great for heavy weapons and magic. Both hit nice and hard. Not the "best" of either but like I said the differences are negligible.
This game is different from souls in the magic department; it's actually worth using.
1. Boosts some stats, there are some passive skills that boost them even more when focused, and enables a "launch" move that throws mobs in the air for a drain and staggers bosses.
2. Enable you to "inherit" skills from different blood codes (classes) without mastering them naturally.

can you zoom out the camera? I run into the issue in literally every game lately where locking onto an enemy would move 3/4 of said enemy out of the frame, making it difficult to dodge attacks

why are games trying to have the camera behind your character all the time regardless of the game you're actually developing. If an enemies lock on spot is above my character and the camera focuses behind me I just end up looking up my own asshole. Why do so many games struggle with this. Why do cameras still get pushed inside your model when you're close to a wall, fucking god hand figured to make it transparent so you can actually see the game instead of spazzing out

Combo drain is when you're in focused state aka the blue bar is full and flashing, and you can launch the enemy up in the air. You can then perform a drain attack while they're in the air which usually kills enemies instantly.
no combo drain is R1 + X and you can use it any time in the middle of a combo to do a quick drain attack
