What's the deal with the resurgence of fucking Half life Memes
Not that I'm complaining
youtube.com/watch?v=7F1ma_0vwog

>not chambeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeer

feels like something is about to happen alright, I'm playing HL1 for the first time in years myself

Well, it's just how memes go - for one reason or another, people started using HL VFX and it caught on.
Still, I would like to believe that, with Black Mesa Xen and Project Borealis being worked on, we might actually see Valve drop something (even if it's a VR game).

Reminder
youtu.be/VtI5HM7GVGY?t=237

>vr half life

ahh that's too bad, don't have the hardware nor the interest for vr honestly, but if they were to make 3 it'll probably go that route

They started on the Half-Life subreddit after Valve didn't acknowledged its 20th anniversary in any way, then they progressively got more traction. Speaking of anniversaries, 58 days left for the 21th.

Everyone and their mother wanted them to make 3 for over a decade now and nothing has happened. I think they'll try to push their VR headset by making a game that's mostly intended for VR. Whether that will be another HL, Portal game or something else entirely is left to be seen.

You could just go the easy route and replace them with some PMCs called "Whiteriver" or something to make it acceptable to modern audiences

It is a marketing strategy. There is an upcoming HL VR game.
You see the same thing on Yea Forums. People have been spamming Twisted Metal threads recently, so I suspect a new TM game coming soon too.

One of the best I saw yet

Guess so. German version decided to use fucking robots for the cleanup force.

>It is a marketing strategy
Pretty sure fucking Valve doesn't need to resort to paying random Youtubers to make HL memes as a way to hype up people for the next HL game.

>2004

I saw this one already. Laugh every time at the (loading)

Just because they don't need to doesn't mean they're not doing it

Why does the Boxart look so grimdark and edgy?

Attached: Half Life.jpg (264x378, 27K)

Attached: 1559868489948.png (569x452, 410K)

Of course not. I mean they start the trend and then other people follow it.

>paying a random to make a meme when it could leak your strategy
I love HL to death but let's be realistic. Valve won't do anything with Half-Life again. I just hope they don't attack Project Borealis out of spite. (it's the first HL spinoff that didn't start as a Half-Life mod and isn't using Source, so I'm not sure how well it will fly).

I think the words you're looking for are "rusty" and "gritty". Doom is the FPS with the edgy boxart

>I just hope they don't attack Project Borealis out of spite. (it's the first HL spinoff that didn't start as a Half-Life mod and isn't using Source,
I never did get their logic of, "Source is hard and dated, so we're totally recreating Source's physics and behaviors in Unreal as a workaround". I would've thought they could just use Source and use conversion-to-Hammer software in Blender or other programs for levels and such if they really needed to streamline or simplify the process for themselves, but it strikes me that what they want is a bunch of modernized particle and environmental effects without recreating or backporting them to Source and they ended up taking the harder route because they didn't want to do that.

Attached: 1552306716100.png (196x196, 51K)

Half-Life has some downright surreal/horror elements that are hidden behind the goofy look/VA and the extremely fast/nervous level design
You are fighting an hopeless battle, are betrayed by the very guys supposed to save you, the situation constantly degrades and at the end you're used as a tool

Talking about edgy HL reminded me of these pretty good videos
youtube.com/watch?v=_GD3e9ZLF-E
youtube.com/watch?v=QV17f9cnNF4

Considering they sat by and watched people making Hunt Down The Freeman, I don't think they care about anything else but Steam bux.

Source is powerful, but really shows its age in a variety of environments
They just wanted to re-code Havoc physics, and then some (dynamic snow, breakable objects, grav gun vortex...)
youtube.com/watch?v=83NAFPTFvrs

Sure, it doesn't have the "Source game" feel, but it holds nicely. I have really high hopes for Black Mesa Xen and this project. Maybe we're living the second renaissance of Half-Life.

HTDF is made in Source and started as a HL mod.
This is important, because if they allow people to depart from this, since they already allowed people to sell their Half-Life games, they could soon find themselves losing the intellectual property over it.
but i'm a retard who knows nothing about law desu

Te están esperando, Gordon, dentro de la cámara de prueba.

youtu.be/aH5y4vTCb1k?t=492

I don't understand why nu-valve hates half life so much, they literally have in their hands the name of a franchise with so much loyal fans that are still talking and creating content of half life even to this day.
There are thousands of devs out there that would die to have created something like half life, how many dead video games companies would like to see their old video games remembered and talked about as much as half life is.
And I'm calling it nu-valve because pretty much none of the people that worked to make half life is at current valve anymore, or so I have read here.

Attached: 1556528339531.jpg (720x708, 34K)

Was the HECU just a bunch of human shields to buy them time?

Attached: 8b5bec2c940a79eb0c3431dc7498c43c.jpg (801x840, 75K)

They were dumb grunts sent in as SCP task-force but pretty much given free reign over how to go about the mission

no they didn't expect it to be such a meltdown so they sent in the black ops to clean it up

It's not, you're just retarded.

>Why does nu-valve hate Half Life so much
>Pretty much none of the people that work at valve worked on Half-Life
You gave yourself your answer
I assume they hate Half Life because it reminds them of their own failures, they haven't shat out a good game in years, their company is known for taking mods from better developers and turning them into games after buying their studios and making fat stacks as a reseller of game licenceses.

>I assume they hate Half Life because it reminds them of their own failures, they haven't shat out a good game in years
You'd assume that'd be a big enough motivator to get it together, and actually produce something somewhat successful. Why mope about your failures, then never make an actual effort to overcome said failures? They clearly have numerous outlines for the future of Half Life. There's no excuse at this point, and even then, I'm not sure if I'd even want another game; it wouldn't have Valve's signature touch.

HLs sound designer deserves to be in the HoF

I'm sure they have enough motivation but expectations for HL3 are impossibly high, imagine having to be responsible for the next coming of vidya christ after previouosly only releasing new skins for CS guns

Half Life 2 was good up until Nova Prospect parts, same boring combine enemies who die easily than Human Grunts were tiresome, in Citadel you would really expect to face something more alien than humans with guns and old striders. You could understand why they removed supersoldiers, female and alien assassins because they were short of time. But still at the end Half Life 2 has less enemy variety than first game, or Doom 3, Prey and Quake 4.

>hurr durr look at me I'm OP and I'm retarded
>muh rrrRRRrrRrrrRRrrrrrRRRrrRRRRrrrRRrrRRRrrrRRrrrr

Really? Is it so difficult to write that properly, like so:

"the test chambeeeeer"

You KNOW that's the proper way to write it. You also know that NOBODY lingers on the last letter when that last letter is a letter like (this is to make it super simple for you to understand) R, M, D, Z, T, G, B, N, L, V and that people in fact only linger on (or draw out) the last letter when it's a letter like A, O, Y etc.

Wirting R's to indicate the eeee sound in "chamber" is 100% fucking over-the-top retarded. It's exactly as idiotic as writing "testttttttttttttttttttt" when someone says "lets perform a teeeeeeeeeest".

Hmm, what more examples can I make for you OP? Lets see, here are some more examples for you (you absolute retard):

>some dude says:
"4chaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan"
>a retard (like OP) writes that like this:
"4channnnnnnnnnnnnnn".

>some dude says:
"fuuuuuuck!"
>a retard (like OP) writes that like this:
"fuckkkkkk"

>some dude says:
"it's time for a BARREL ROOOOOOOLL!!"
>a retard (like OP) writes that like this:
"BARREL ROLLLLLLLL"

>some dude says:
"Hey Miiiiiike, long time no see, what's up?"
>a retard (like OP) writes that like this:
"Hey Mikeeeee"

>vegeta says:
"kakarooooooooot!"
>a retard (like OP) writes that like this:
"kakarottttttttttttttt"

Do you now understand how retarded you are, OP? Or do you need more examples, OP? Are you too fucking retarded to even understand how fucking retarded you are, OP? Perhaps you should consider suicide.

Nice projection.

I don't understand the problem people have with HL2 as a game. It's not perfect but I really like it.

Only thing I would wish in retrospect would be to give us a more "extensive" look at the inner workings of the combine when we raid the Citadel or when we attack the Combine Nexus.
Other than that, I like it.

No idea. Where there any plans for another location (by Valve)?

They kind of wrote the story into a corner by blowing up Black Mesa. It was a top tier location and they weren't going to top that with anything else.

As weird of a choice as unspecified cyrillic land is for the sequel, at least I'm glad they didn't have it take place on Xen.

Black Mesa has a whole division of marines stuffing it with sandbags and turrets, then the black ops add even more sandbags and crates, then the aliens break everything
I didn't really like Black Mesa in HL1, Black Mesa (the mod) make it a bit more lively

even though a nuke of that size underground would still leave a lot of black mesa perfectly intact

It was fun as fuck but I don’t get why it’s praised more than the base game.

No, HECU was the military trying to retake the facility and salvage its research

Black Ops was the military giving up and just trying to stop it from spreading

Greater variety of weapons, and weapons felt better. (Deagle is a lot better than magnum, and Portal Opener is a better weapon than the overpowered dematerializer Gordon gets)

is sven coop still alive? any recommended servers?

So I watched Freeman's mind after hearing a lot of good things and I liked it a lot. Is Shepard's mind and Barney's mind any good?
I heard Shepard's is pretty decent but Barney's isn't so good.

Probably because the original artist for hl had a much, much darker, grittier (and sexual) tone in mind. He had to tone it down of course, which made it far too goofy for the actual shit going down.

Not made by Ross, so don't bother.

>sexual
Aside from the BOOB BONES of the Assassin, what else ?
I think they originally had a ponytail, but can't think of anything else

Barney already has an established voice actor so Barneys Mind doesnt make any sense

A bunch. One was Gordon traveling to other planets to eradicate the Xen forces there. Another one that got a fair bit of traction and eventually formed the basis for the final storyline had him work as an agent for the Resistance, dealing with multiple different alien races in an US east coast city, an old European town and finally Egypt. That was the origin of the Borealis too - the game was meant to start on board the ship Hyperborea.

Headcrabs and Mr Friendly with ass.

The 1984 movie was a huge influence, visually speaking, on the early versions of Half-Life 2. The citadel's interior used to be coated in white tile as well.

The only servers alive are the ones with south americans in it, so no

Episode 3 soon haha...

>dealing with multiple different alien races in an US east coast city, an old European town and finally Egypt
That's very subtle Jojo reference.

Thought Mr. Friendly was a joke monster made solely to frighten 14-yo boys playing the game by playing on their "internal homophobia"
I don't really understand the thought process, I'm gay and I wouldn't like having a giant painis monster attempt to couple with my head

I think HL story (while still holding up nicely) ends up felling a bit disjointed because they cut off many things that would have made it more memorable
On the grittiness, for instance, a VOX military announcement was supposed to be
>FREEMAN. PERSONNEL. WILL. BE. TERMINATED. UNTIL. YOU. SURRENDER
Which I assume got cut because they didn't want to make HECU Cartoon villains, and it would maybe mislead the player on how to deal with them

>honestly feel bad for zoomers for not being able to experience this
Gmod was pretty popular with early gen zoomers, hence all the little kids and teens who used to play on it back in the day. Remember that the time span for zoomers is ~22 years now and growing.

>Gmod was pretty popular with early gen zoomers
This. I ran an HL2RP server when I was 13, and that was 7 years ago.

>tfw Valve will never make another Half Life game because Steam makes more than enough money for them

It probably wouldn't even be good at this point, just like how Douk Nukem Forever ended up just being disappointing.

I'm playing through the series for the first time now. Ladders are fucked and the platforming is shit but the variation in guns and unique setting make up for it.
I've heard that Half life 2 was a huge leap forwards so I'm looking forward to playing it after I'm finished with 1.

more like never
trannylad can't make shit

Replaying Steam version Black Mesa and holy fuck does it feel soulless after you get over the initial
>Wow, HL1 but on Source (that is not Half-Life: Source)
Soundtrack sucks balls.

>they hunger lost souls got leaked
has anyone played it yet? i have the builds but havent got around to playing them

Gmod up through version 10 and 11 onward are very different experiences.
The Gmod zoomers played and what we were playing 2006-2010ish are two different games and communities.

>There are people who's first Half-Life was Half-Life: Source

I honestly hate how they felt obligated to change a lot of the level design.
It's not that it was changed that bothers me, but it feels "changed for the sake of changing it", without much deep thought into what they wanted it to be.
I am excited for Xen though. Good or bad, I think they will push the limits and perhaps put more thought into the complete redesign.
I know it is in the beta version for testing, but I'm waiting for the release.

My first half life was half life 2 Beta in 2003.

Attached: 1568872977190.png (376x341, 50K)

Ladders are one of the mechanics that didn't age well. The rest is top tier.
Plateforming feels bad because of GoldSrc crazyfast move speed. It always takes me a few levels to familiarise myself with the movespeed at first.

HL2 is a different game. You'll have the same feeling (highly linear shooter with a variety of weapons and some puzzles scattered along the way). It's stronger in some aspects (physics are more intuitive, environments feels actually alive and detailed rather than corridors in a maze-like structure), weaker in others (ennemies are a lot easier to deal with, AI feels dumber, some weapons aren't that fun to use).

I personally loved to death every game in the series i've played, but my favourite is Opposing Force.

If you're interested in why the AI feels dumber in HL2 than in HL1, it's because it's a LOT more aggressive than the Grunts. They do throw grenades (at a much reduced rate) and use squad tactics, but they never back down and call for backup like HECU did.

Attached: 1483188639_HECU colored_filter.png (640x800, 93K)

>enemies can run AND shoot
>extremely accurate and 1 guy can kill you in a second
>everything is so blurry/shiny that you cant see shit
>random shit added everywhere
AI is worse than SMODs

Yeah, some things like making the architecture make more sense was alright with me (Blast Pit Generator), or fucking with your expectations (Getting the crowbar), but a lot of changes seemed out of place, and the soundtrack doesn't even pretend to be inspired by Half-Life's OST which I personally find stupid.

I don't remember any bad change. Lobby fight in Questionable Ethics is the perfect kind of fun for me.
HECU grunts are fun to fight, even though I feel bad for killing them

I liked the music. It's not Kelly Bailey, it looks like a dance track at some point, but it goes nicely with the action sequences.

>Soundtrack sucks balls

youtube.com/watch?v=Py41_jT9iXY

nice, need to check it myself.

I heard that Half Life was linear before I started playing but now that I've finally gotten into it I can't help but feel as if the linearity was overstated - there's plenty of pockets you can go off to and explore for health and ammo and it opens up a little in some areas.
What I wasn't expecting was for the difficulty to be such a ballbuster. This is probably the only time I've had trouble with medium difficulty in an FPS. Can't tell if it's meant to be this challenging or if I just suck at the game.

Fighting HECU in BM is nothing compared to Black Ops final hideout in Opposing Forces
>invisible, fast, silent enemies that can outflank you and cut down your HP faster than any other enemies in the game
>male Black Ops is also a silent fucker that can use the grenade launcher to one-shot you

It's been a while since I played it but I remember Office Complex adding a lot of pointless rooms and hallways that add nothing, rewards you with nothing, and are just amateur level design. It could be fixed, but I haven't heard of them changing entire level designs from that early in the game after the Steam release version.

they're pinging him on discord

post yfw when "This announcement s-system NOW. UNDER. MILITARY. COMMAND."

Goldsrc still is a tad more slower than quake, on top of that valve was hellbent into limiting max spd and removing bhop.

Barnacles, Tentacles, Bullsquid sucking you off, Nude vortigaunts. Nihilanth has Combine lovense up his ass.

>Gordon, work as quickly as you can

Attached: 1560103557782.jpg (600x766, 137K)

>HECU marines are discord trannies
I refuse to believe this

Been a while too. Might reinstall the mod (if I can find it), I don't like the change to Marine VA in the Steam release.

It's "linear" as in, there's only one set path with a few hidden rooms for more health, and you do some backtracking at one point, but there's never "two different (intended) ways" to pass a level.
For the difficulty, are you playing on Hard? HL on Hard is an experience that I like to do, but is very time consuming
>Vortigaunts with 50 damage lighting ball that's almost instant to charge
>invisible black ops
>bullet sponge HECU lads spamming grenades and constantly retreating

Didn't play Quake, i think Valve hated bhop because they felt it ruined the level designed they created. Which is understandble

none of this is remotely sexual
except maybe if you're american

Something like a HECU rape joke would have been ten times more sexual than this

The thing is that Half Life 1's soundtrack was very fitting for the atmosphere. Because of the low graphical quality everything felt a bit surreal to me, and the soundtrack fitted that very well.
Black Mesa looks a lot more sharp, clean and generally realistic. The same kind of music would not do any scene, backdrop or moment much justice.
While some soundtracks managed, if you ask me, to feel like a good attempt at a modern re-imagination of Half Life's OST (Residue processing comes to mind), there are indeed parts where the soundtrack is radically different to better fit the modern interpretation.
The Gonarch's OSTs (Black Mesa has several for different parts of the battle) come to mind. Jungle drums was 10/10 for Half Life's gonarch, its tune felt in Synch with the Gonarch's movements, was disturbing and weird, which was also excactly what the Gonarch was.
Black Mesa's approach to the Gonarch OST, to also accomodate for their re-interpretation of Xen, has a lot more boom to it, bringing home the message you're fighting a massive monster that will fucking destroy you the second you make a slip-up.

Personally I love Black Mesa's gonarch fight, its got a predator-prey dynamic going on that constantly switches inbetween you and it throughout the entire chapter, which can easily take over an hour for your first try.

Anyone remember the tutorial videos that there were on the main menu? I've not been able to find copies of them anywhere.

Nostalgia I suppose? People are nostalgic for garrysmod/TF2/HL2 memes for fucks sake. not complaining either.

people are also still making skins, scriptmods, maps, head hexes, etc for garrysmod DAILY too

Where was Kleiner in HL1? Was he the scientist beside Eli?

Yeah, Gonarch fight was really well done. I liked that it was getting visibly hurt towards the end.

I feel I might have spoiled the game for myself playing the Uplink demo.

That's him yup

Yee*

How do they avoid fall damage like that?

I see. I haven't played Black Mesa in a while, so I don't know how much stuff has changed. I know the mod/free version changed where you got the weapons. Did it do anything else?

In City 17, where Half-Life 2 was set, you dumb retarded nigger.

It probably was means to an end to Gaben, who now dreams about bigger things and seeing people remember Valve for Half-Life is like you trying to get a PhD and someone remembering you were good at clown tricks.

>9:25
>So who is this Freem-

City 17 was in Bulgaria, an optimal position due to a landscape and climate the populace would be familar with as well as direct access to the Middle East, Asia and Europe.

It's not much of a spoiler, the military troops are firing at the player on the box art.

Glad they changed the art style tbqh, that just looks like the Combine are space commies..

It changed gunplay a little bit, I was dissappointed with the Shotgun nerf but the MP5 in retail Black Mesa feels very statisfying to use, especially for a Half Life game.
Besides that there's some graphical and lighting improvements, aswel as new voices and models for HECU. It also has the fully completed Surface Tension. Thats all I remember from the tip of my tongue.

Attached: HECU.jpg (1280x720, 69K)

Yeah, everyone knows City 17 is somewhere in eastern Europe, but the person I replied to was talking about how Half-Life 2's setting didn't fit Half-Life, which is fucking retarded because Half-Life isn't The Witcher or some other game where the story and setting take precedence over the gameplay.

I reinstalled garrysmod on a whim the other day. Im 23. my intention was to go into some random sandbox server and just talk and shoot the shit while maybe build something cool with other autists... I ended up finding a halo roleplay server and put down hours in the past month already with PvE and PvP shit. So much fun. Not a whole lot of squeekers either so thats a plus. Some maps are optimised like SHIT though so that sucks.

Attached: 1552592154966.png (664x793, 18K)

I guess I could post it.

Attached: 1545625797275.jpg (800x1125, 139K)

They had literal Lenin on posters.

Attached: Billboard001a.png (256x1024, 181K)

Well, this is the dumbest post I read here today, congratulations.

Fuck surface tension in black mesa tbqh. Let's make the maps larger and add more hitscanning enemies while also making the ai more retarded.

Valve office tables literally have wheels on them, when an employee wants to work on something else they wheel over their desk, Episode 3 just got a bad straw with people rather working on Portal and TF2, and now VR shit. People have tried to get back on Episode 3 but digging through a mass of level deisgn and assets lying in folders are usually enough to make people give up.

This warms my heart and also makes me really sad.
It's not enough that I got to experience it, something like it will never happen again.

Why do you people use fan-art as canon? It's like I'm in a Half-Life 2 RP server.

>Blue Shift
>Includes new items for online play
This means HD pack or what?

>he didn't submit his status report to the administrator

>hl2 leak
>fan art

I assume it's referring to the HD model pack. Though that does seem kind of dishonest to phrase it like that.

Oh wait you were talking the modversion, sorry I'm rarted.
Here's the big changes inbetween the Black Mesa mod as I remember it when it came out, and Half life:
>Both Surface tension and On a rail had signifficant chunks removed from them, later down the line one guy made a mod bringing them back to their full length. He was promptly invited to join Crowbar collective and to work on Xen for them.
>Different weapon locations
>Facility layout feels like it makes a bit more sense and less linear
>'Fixed' a few locations you could cheese past in Half Life. For example using tripmine stairs to skip the entirety of Powerup
>Actually shows the HECU retreat, which is a pretty awesome scene/fight

Once again that's what I remember from the tip of my tongue

>waiting for oxcjae to release more Half-Leif

Attached: 331.jpg (498x330, 22K)

Even if that was in one of the many "leak" files, which it isn't, it's just a placeholder texture, and it's still not canon.

Soundtrack does suck balls and the voice acting for the marines is anime tier but I actually thought it was pretty good. On A Rail is great in BS.

you forgot to mention they ruined the movement

WOW DUDE I CANT EVEN JUMP BUGGED GAME MECHANICS!!

It was ominous in the original but the voice change in Black Mesa was retarded.

Am I the only one who can't tell the difference between the Commandos from Toy Soldiers and the HECU Marines from Half-Life 1? They say the same fucking HOO-RAH lines.

Attached: 1546237791119.jpg (1280x550, 344K)

Yeah, tries too hard.

Attached: 1541803593590.gif (256x192, 546K)

I don't think anybody is claiming the leak content is still canon.

While it changes the tone of the game entirely I've gotta say that I liked the campiness of it.

>bullet sponge HECU lads spamming grenades and constantly retreating

>Most combines drop in 1-2 magnum shots even on hard mode.
>Marines tank a entire clip or a nade.

Elite can tank nades or energy balls but then they have basically no HP, amusing how people complain about Combines despite them being miles easy to handle than marines.

Attached: 1551043929035.jpg (500x472, 10K)

that's the most an actual soldier can stay once the entirety of them have been torn away

I prefer Half-Life 2 because at least it doesn't have retard-strong marines that don't die and a SMG that spreads, and shoots, like diarrhea.

Combines have more damage and accuracy than marines, but way lower HP is a fair trade off.

But If I remember HECU AI is nearly same as combines on Black mesa, they just cleared up a bit the code.

Do you always remember things with the tip of your tongue? Usually that's up to the brain.

My name is drill instructor Dwight T. Barnes!

Attached: nigger.jpg (1280x720, 62K)

I have ever since I volunteered for a 1-time but well paying gig at Aperture

They're not very well developed characters. I guess they tried to make the player not feel too bad about losing them in OppForce or killing them by the dozens in the original.

If you need them to be more complex, they would be 19 to 25 years old Marines committing treason, war crimes, and then dying painfully because they had absolutely no idea on how to handle the situation

Black Mesa gives them more voice lines (some of them kinda hilarious, in a campy way) and a whole chapter in which you see them pulling out (youtube.com/watch?v=DaHzeDbXwvg)

Personally I really like their design and I think they were cool guys in Opposing Force, but that might be because I have a think for vidya characters wearing gas masks/helmets

Attached: 1552219699104.png (557x605, 178K)

Real question here.

Why didn't Valve make a HL expansion about the Black Ops?

Were either of the expansions even done by them?

Nope, gearbox did them.

Also at point that OP4 released the engine was already quite dated.

Black ops were basically invented just so even the grunts would have someone with human guns to fight against. If they made the "even badder guys" bad where would they go from there? It seems they never intended players to be truly mean (though they allowed it).

HECU marines on Black Mesa is literally just Combine AI with the (much needed) command to back off when low on health with no teammates
Combine AI is shitty because it operates in tight corridors, but also because they will never back down from a fight with the player.
Having to finish off Vorts and Race X troopers was a challenge in the original.

Because they're not canon. The idea of sending ANOTHER military unit to clean-up the cleanup, and then arm the nuke, that gets disarmed, only for it to be armed again by the G-Man acting completely out of character, can only exist in Gearbox's shitty writer's room.

If they made the "even badder guys" good*

Because like all OP4 stuff they're not canon. Female blops alone are and they were with the HECU.

more like why didnt they give us a HL2 expansion where you play as combine overwatch or the rebels?

>Secret Black Ops mission that plays like 4th Survivor
Patch it in Randy Bobandy!!! Patch it in right now!!!

Attached: 1568931409528.png (944x1080, 424K)

Best level

Attached: qe.jpg (1280x720, 154K)

They could have done something where the "badder guys" are Combine scout patrols that you have to fight off when going into Xen.

Attached: spy pacha.png (557x522, 305K)

HECU had redeemable qualities (and a cool design) that made people like them and a mod would have sold well.
Black Ops are a pure hate sink, silent, deadly, don't talk at all in the original, and only show up in one chapter.
Also, making a game on them would humanise them and humanising them would remove a bit of what made them interesting.

Have you seen youtube.com/watch?v=_GD3e9ZLF-E ?
It's pretty great

You don't go to Xen in Opposing Force.

Half Life 2 could be better with Crab Synth and Synth Mortar.

Well, you can go.

Only to die.

youtube.com/watch?v=Ukndo4Eirw8

expansions were planned user, one of them was going to be developped by warren spector's dev studio and another one by arkane studios, but both got canned.

Black Ops never show up in Half-Life 1 because they aren't canon. The assassins are with the HECU.

>ANOTHER big synth you need to shoot at it with rockets until it dies
Retarded. The only enemies that are missing from Half-Life 2 are heavy-types that aren't complete bullet sponges, but that can still take a couple of hits, unlike the Antlion Guards

Attached: 1559661703472.png (1203x800, 1.39M)

I haven't seen this followup before

Attached: 1544718782117.png (359x340, 118K)

You do

There are sections of Xen that you can visit thanks to the teleport gun alt fire. Some are deadly, some are just ammo and health stashes.

Going there for 60 seconds for a pick-up during teleporter fuckery isn't really going there. Spending whole chapters in there, like in Half-Life and Blue Shift is.

>21th

newfag

I mean that could be the difference between that and OP4, maybe throw in some stuff about how the Black Ops have very basic knowledge about the Combine and are trying to prevent them from coming into our world. They are with the government, it wouldn't surprise me if they had some info about them.

Hunters were good.

Been here since 2007 or 8 but OK champ. Sorry I haven't seen every reaction image ever posted.

According to the ending of Half-Life 1 the HECU invade the border world Xen, so if Gearbox weren't pussies, that's what Opposing Force could have been about, and you'd get to Xen after gunning down some more scientists.

Fairly sure they work with the HECU until they backstab them.
They are different enough in design, fighting skills, and general behavior that they can be considered distincts from the HECU
Laidlaw himself said that Opposing Force is "canon and non-canon at the same time", so for me they're canon.
I don't think the plot of Opposing Force is retarded. It's basically a giant test of character for Adrian by the GMan.
He re-activated the bomb because "no witnesses".

They have a few voice lines when you're observing them, but the rest of the time they're 100% silent

I remember playing two mods for half life where you play as a vortigaunt and as a headcrab. Had some geniune fun with them back then.

Watch that ending again, HECU corpses are in the middle of a desert, not on Xen.

Attached: 1566162725261.png (812x760, 112K)

The Black Ops were never in Half-Life.

yeah, a newfag, 2006 was the cutoff date

Well, this is the dumbest post I read here today, congratulations.

Okay gearbox internet defense force.

I don't think we see any marines on the borderworld, just scientists bodies. BM was training people in the use of the HEV suit solely to gather more samples.
The ending does show a few bodies and a destroyed tank with the Xen skybox, but it's a limitation of the GoldSrc engine. It was supposed to be Earth.

I don't give a shit about Gearbox.
Seems kind of out-of-place to invade a fucking alien world when they're running away from Black Mesa because they can't handle it.

>say something factually wrong
>get corrected
>"FUCKING DEFENSE FORCE!"
Weak shit my man.

Attached: 1551403519094.jpg (286x385, 47K)

You're the one who broke out the wojak, Randy, take a breather, you already got Epic's money.

Okay, I actuallly didn't notice that the skybox was still that of Xen. Still, this was an engine limitation.

>You're the one who broke out the wojak
I'm actually not.

Just because you headcanon them as working with HECU doesn't make it true
In fact, HECU is a Gearbox creation as the ennemies in HL1 are always referred to as "the military" and "grunts"
Doesn't take a genius to notice that two ennemies with vastly different design and combat style might not be the same faction. You also encounter the assassins way after the HECU pulled out.

What kinda desert has this nice open views of the galaxy?

Attached: Screenshot_2019-09-22 Half Life Ending (Original - All Endings) - YouTube.png (1000x617, 741K)

What about this?

Attached: hydra.jpg (1024x539, 174K)

Where are the Black Ops, that aren't the assassins, in Half-Life 1?

Ah yes, Xen is well known for its New Mexican desert soil.

I don't know, I have no idea how it would have worked as an actual enemy and not just an entity that you have to run from throughout that whole sewer section after Alyx gets captured.

Not that it would suck for the Hydra to only be that, it'd be great to light a fire under the player's ass as he is fighting through the Combine and trying to climb out of the sewers. Is that from a mod or something?

I dunno buddy
>You also encounter the assassins way after the HECU pulled out.
Seems pretty convincing. They clearly have other orders.

And Mexican deserts are well known for their green sky and donut looking asteroids just floating arround?

Attached: Screenshot_2019-09-22 Half Life Ending (Original - All Endings) - YouTube(1).png (1000x616, 929K)

Also, point out to me, where in Half-Life 1, the assassins are shooting the HECU, since you see them together at various points.

That's Aurora Borealis.

The assassins that you kill in Half-Life 1, obviously

It's an engine limitation.

>The ending does show a few bodies and a destroyed tank with the Xen skybox, but it's a limitation of the GoldSrc engine. It was supposed to be Earth.
During the ending, I thought they could change the skybox with each teleportation. Hence when you finally teleport to the tram, you just see regular space out the window instead of Xen. If that's the case, then they could've had a desert skybox as you see the dead marines

Valve literally said that was engine limitation.

Src?

There's no skybox in tram ride, you're in a black tube with white particles spawning around.

Based
I prefer Combine Overwatch

>I have no idea how it would have worked as an actual enemy
yeah it just hoverd around and swung at the player so thats why they cut it

You never encounter them both at the same time. They have different equipment, fighting styles, and stay in Black Mesa after the HECU pulls out
I don't know what point you're trying to argue here

Yeah, everyone knows that. The footage from the WIP version of Half-Life 2 isn't news to anyone anymore.

easy there bro, we're talking, not writing blog posts with comments disabled.

HL and OP4 ending use same trick, you never exactly moves, it's just background change.

so why didn't they add a similar tube to hide the skybox peabrain

And you don't move, ever. WASD controls the map, so it moves around you.

>but there's never "two different (intended) ways" to pass a level.
There's that programmed stealth section in Xen.

As a proof of skybox limitations, there is actually on skybox loaded on Surface Tension. It reuses the last saved one.
If you load a ST game after playing on Xen, the sky becomes alien and full of stars.

this

>since you see them together at various points
No you don't, you only ever see them by themselves: at the end of Apprehension and near the beginning of Lambda Core. Both times, they're the only enemies in the room

fuck off shill, rp servers are cancer

Is Xen supposed to be a microscopic universe?

Attached: 1545170916883.jpg (480x317, 133K)

They have no dicks, no butt, or mouth anymore
What's the point

>Halo roleplay
I played on a single DarkRP server for almost a whole year when I was a little underage shit, even got my mom to buy me a VIP pass.

What exactly happens in a Halo RP server? I'm curious.

H-he's fast!

No, Goldsrc.

>What exactly happens in a Halo RP server
Admins give themselves weapons and ranks and make themselves Spartans while the little people have to abide to whatever arbitrary rules the admins make up while trying to roleplay as being UNSC marines and such. This is pretty much what happens in every RP server that isn't a DarkRP one.

>and not just an entity that you have to run from throughout that whole sewer section
But, that sounds cool. Why do you have to be able to shoot every enemy?

Don't reply unless you've read through my post.

All enemies in HL are shown to be killable. Even vehicles and aircraft are targets.
Would have felt a bit out of place

They definitely pulled from that concept, with the microbiology skybox.

Yeah, I shat a brick when I saw the image I posted. Such a simple concept but a great way to find an alien world to take inspiration from.

Attached: 1545171561110.jpg (605x566, 367K)

Having an exception is not a bad thing. The Half-Life games are full of unique areas where the objective changes. Remember the tentacles in HL1? You can't kill them by shooting them. How is this different?

Sorry bro, you were boring me.

How do you think Gonarch feeds?

I wasnt even intending on giving the server name?
Admins set up events either PvE or PvP and you shoot shit and chat shit.
This can happen too.

They have mouths and butts and dicks can be re-added with combine bullshit tech.

Tentacles don't have HP, you need kill it with a trigger script. Also ton of shit is just a glorified brush.

We had a nice thread for it the other day and it made people want to talk about it again

I'd rather Half-Life 2 didn't have a re-play of the worst part of Half-Life 1, plus I think it would be even cooler if you never saw the body of the Hydra.

Wow motherfuckers look like headcrabs.

I didn't know how it would work in the actual game, not in the beta footage where the player never actually fights it.

cant believe they named their son after a 2019 meme...

Engine limitation.

I think they pop on last wave.

But HL difficulty is just a toggle rather than spawn tweak like quake or doom.

and seeds?

Black Mesa is Half-Life 2 with a Half-Life 1 skin.
The AI that they haven't rewritten themselves (the grunts, some aliens), the pacing and mechanics of the scripted sequences, the movement and gunplay, are pretty much carbon copied from Half-Life 2 with all the same faults. It's sluggish, stupid, and brain dead easy, compared to Half-Life 1.

Shepard's Mind gets better the farther you go. By the end I'd say that it's gotten almost as good as Freeman's Mind, even if with a different approach to its character.

Yes. That's the aspect of Xen the BM devs failed to translate for their version of Xen, from what I know. Afaik, because I haven't played their Xen yet for myself, they've totally neglected that many of the landmasses you traverse in HL1's Xen are supposed to be living organisms.

the fuck are you on about, it's only hunters and striders. I wouldn't be so pissed about it, but they quite obviously cut them because of playtesters, pretty sure commentary talks about it too.
youtube.com/watch?v=6TRGOO_Qyoo

To be fair high enemy density don't really work well with HL, much less 2 where movespeed got nerfed.

there are regular soldiers too...

Yeah, that's why I mentioned it. I learned that they were supposed to be on that fight originally. I don't know how why I have to repeat myself to make it easier for you to understand, but then again this is a Half-Life thread we're talking about.

The Episode 2 beta leak from Facepunch is still floating around with versions of that battle. Someone also made a mod I believe to recreate the full ground assault.

show show show

but im not talking about the beta footage where the player doesnt fight it, im talking about the dev footage where it shows you actually fighting it throughout the level and its just stationary and swings if you get to close to it, the NPCs dont react to it good either

It's been posted in the thread already. Just look at the Xen skybox.

Since when? I never dropped below Hard difficulty playing official Half-Life games, my entire PHPBB by Przemo message board was pissed about that part because it was so dumbed down.
>oh no they are gonna close down the portal effectively stranding us on this shithole planet
>better NOT send every troop we have, gunships can fuck off either

That's because it's work in progress, hence why I don't know how it would work in the actual level we get in the game. Why are you people so stupid and dense?

>people don't like Blast Pit

Attached: 1485743832082.jpg (326x236, 42K)

im not talking about the shitty E3 beta footage, have you not seen the other dev footage? where they cut the enemy out of the game for very specific reasons? you know before the game got leaked?
you dont know how it would work because your a fucking retard that hasnt watched other than the most basic shit

>what is jbmod

Your asking for something no one really knows beyond what we were shown in beta stuff.
Stop being a retarded baby.

II think that ton of "big" fights got nerfed on HL2, If I remember uprising was harder on first release than later patches.

I can swear there are, I remember running them over with the car. Like 3 regular soldiers coming together sometimes

yea, but I imagined some comparison of some microbiology stuff with the skybox side by side to show the same stuff :(

When is she getting her game, bros?

Attached: Aleph_1.jpg (500x1219, 122K)

>Your asking for something no one really knows beyond what we were shown in beta stuff.
im not asking anything, im TELLING you that the hydra was never going to be in the game because they cut it in 2003 BEFORE THE GAME WAS LEAKED, the programmer that worked on it says it himself, that the hydra was not fun to play against but was fun watching the death animation of NPCs getting killed by the hydra therefore we scrapped it

Just look up images from electron microscopes, it's clear that's how they made the images. Make the comparison image yourself if you want one so bad.

>therefore we scrapped it
>we

>We

Attached: 5f0.gif (540x300, 2.59M)

Spoon-fed culture is bad for you and dumbs your brain.

cut content for any game always gives me this bittersweet feeling. what could have been. but then things like this do ground me - sure it would have been novel but it would just have been another 'thing' we take for granted in a 100th playthrough, or just simply didnt fit/work in the gameplay OR had to be cut due time issues. But it's nice to be able to dig some of the things up and ponder them.

Attached: 1455488546999.jpg (371x382, 29K)

gordon was the one who caused the experiment to go wrong. he time travels to black mesa in hl3 to stop the experiment only to be the one who caused it

Azure Sheep had Panther Eye's and fuck every single one of them.
Fuck that female Barney too if you catch my drift

Retarded beyond belief. HL3 is about them finding out they can use Borealis as an interdimensional icebreaker and literally cut out Earth's dimension out from Xen sealing it away from Combine's reach forever.

>you're not the only person who knows about the cut content from Half-Life 2.
im not saying i am, im just saying your wrong about how it would be in the final game when in fact it was cut BEFORE the leak by the guy who created it, so you bitching about
>LE I DONT KNOW WHAT IT WOULD BE LIKE IN THE FINAL GAME XDDD
is bullshit because it was NEVER going to be in the final game

its not really cut content, more of content that outright didnt work, it literally sat in place and only attacked you if you were in range, NPCs just shot at it and if they got close enough and were killed by it a cool death animation would play, the gameplay of it just shows gordon walking right past it getting hit but it not doing anything once he's out of range, then a combine soldier is spawned in then gets killed by it showing off the death animation which akwardly transitions to ragdoll

Are you unable to understand the concept of supposition? I never said the Hydra was in the final game, or would be in the final game, you mumbling retard.

>BUT I NEVER SAID THAT!!

Actually Prospero, but you're right.
The concepts they had for that game basically transmogrified into Steam. (Cyan went for it with their URU MMO and flopped almost immediately after 2 failures, because puzzle solving MMOs aren't viable)

>edits the (You) out with inspect element
now, can you screencap your ENTIRE screen? strange how the third guy didnt reveal himself to be another person... REALLY activates my almonds

Take your anti-psychotics before you shoot someplace up, please.

forcing a meme

Assassins do.

This is pathetic. Maybe slow down and ask yourself why you want this to be a meme so badly.

nice job ruining a good meme with a wojak.

imagine posting unfunny, out of place memes just because normies don't like them

I never got my head around Breen. Some times, he sounds like a sympathetic villain who honestly did what he did because it was the only way humans wouldn't get meganuked or he bought into what the combine say and think they'll make eventually be good for humanity, others, he's a complete cunt who knows what's going on and just wants to save his butt. Sometimes he's super competent, running black mesa, being in on the g-man's game, negotiating with the combine, others, he's a major fuckup, forgetting the gravity gun and embarassing himself infront of the benefugtors.
The fuck's up with him? What's his endgame?

People can be self-contradictory

He's a sleazy charismatic administrator. He sounds sympathetic because appearing sympathetic and trustworthy is how you build an administrative career, he's probably been doing it his whole life, same as during hl2, trying to save his own hide above anything else by persuading others. He forgot the gravity gun because he's not some composed tactical genius, he's probably spent most of his life sitting in an office.

That's why I like him as a character. He's a bad guy, but a very human one. There's a sort of irony in a selectively competent old man being the front for an unfathomable alien empire.

reminder that, taking epistle 3 into account, breen knew exactly how fucked we really were

The breengrub twitter was very interesting too. I should check out some day if laidlaw wrote more about it elsewhere

Did Breen have something on the Combine/g-man that made it worth the effort to even bother giving him that escape portal?

Its because you can sympathize with him and understand why he would do it. And you can understand that he's now on a Power Trip with a ego that's trying to do what he thinks is best for humanity. But like everyone he has laps in judgment, you can understand him forgetting the Gravity gun because he has no idea how that thing works and likley has no Muscle, he was struggling to lift the thing when he fired it. He's not the deepest but his few layers are very interesting

If he could get Eli or Judith to re-create that Portal Tech, or just outright find the Borealis, he believes that Humanity can be upgraded from a Planet that used little more than a water fountain, populated by Bootlickers into a place that the rest of the Combine with actually look on with some respect, elevating them into a higher status, not the best, but better than where they are now.

Those 2 things are the only reason why the Combine decided to enslave Humanity instead of outright genocide because beyond those 2 things Earth others nothing to the rest of them. Which would explain why the Combine didn't genocide all of them and just steal whatever resources the planet had.

That's why he's so desperate for Freeman to stop because if Freeman keeps wreaking havoc he looses the only bargaining chip for the future of Humanity, the Borealis/Portal Tech.
