Goobtroid II: Return of Mario

Super Mario has returned to Goombas homeplanet! This time his mission is to bring this spacemushroom race to total extinction (35 out of 50 is enough though) and come back alive. Are you man enough to explore and platform your way through this planet brimming full of clever traps and atmosphere?
I had quite some trouble developing this one. Because of I used an alternative wincon, I could not have checkpoints. For stage this massive it would be frustratig to start all over again, so I made a conscious decision to make the level quite easy. Another major hurdle was the 500 second timelimit. I love getting lost in a Metroidvania, but this time I had to make sure to gently guide the player to the right direction without it feeling too handholdy. This was also major concern for bringing down the win condition to just 35 goombas, maybe someone will try to get them all on subsequent playtrough. 35 was enough for the player to go to the ”bottom” of the stage and back, which is the adventure I wanted the player to experience. Camera was also a pain to control. I wanted to give the player a sense of where to go next, without making the platforming up and down too easy. I did not want to use coins as a guide, since that would have conflicted with the setting.

The King's Guard: Four themed Boom Booms fights to get access to the King's room.

I'll play these levels, but I'll take it slowly as I usually play most of the levels from each user. Meanwhile here is my level
Already played it and it's well done. I really liked it. You could always make a sequel or a similar level design with a new theme. I am a big fun of clever platforming.

Great level with a bit too high enemy density. Memorable concept and good pacing.

Desert Winds and high enemy spam are frustrating combination that really hates the player and is impossible to balance. Stage was still fun though, especially bouncing off flying Koopas. Having the option to bomb the tanks was a nice touch.

Really good level, always a pleasure to just platform normally in a memorable setting. The inside of the castle was definately weaker though, waiting around for Thwomps is not fun.

Using a double checkpoint should be mandatory in all rd coin levels like this one. I did all the chores separately, yet have no motivation to complete the level for real. Chores were all creative and fun, though mowing down the grass should have been shorter.

Now this is how you do a red coin level! Good job making the overused boss fight feel refreshing and fun each time.

Great level! Love how you have to pay attention to both the moving platform and enemies at the same time.
