Z2 were okay for handheld console games. Z1 indeed feels like a peak though.

Z2 was pretty good but Z3 was weak for a number for reasons. At the very least Z2 had an excuse for splitting it into two parts since many of the series had time skips (TTGL, CG, 00, Armageddon).

My problem with Z2 was actually shoehorning in the Z1 cast. The Z2 exclusive guys were doing fine with the story on their own and it felt we suddenly got way more baggage in. This became even more bloated in Z3.

Retcon what? For Z there are noticeable changes in behaviour for Shin in Seed Destiny and how he felt when fighting Kira (his VA approved of this version) and secret wise Stellar is saveble. In Z2 you can go against what happened in the Code Geass series and have the guys still trust in Lelouch after the reveal which opens a seperate path split in the stages.
