Good stats make him more useful and survivable. Use stat textbooks to get his attack, def and speed to 6, then use the elite units satisfaction bonus to further boost them all by 1.

But in all honesty samurai aren't that good as units when it comes to lategame. Confined to front row, limited firepower without god-tier stats and unit numbers. I think I stopped using Rance at around turn 45 or so, though part of it was because I could avoid the Shimazu brothers assassination scene.

Pro tip mini spoiler: If you get 50 satisfaction and then go for a satisfaction bonus (even if the satisfaction bonus isn't for the 50 mark) you will get an option to acquire an addition action flag each turn. One of if not simply outright the most essential power up of the entire game.

Unit stats are more important than unit numbers, good units can handle fodder enemies with three times their size. I finished my fresh true history run couple of days ago and I mostly used the money to replenish troops. Buying can also hurt you if you are stuck with shit units since it affects enemy troop scaling.
Also remember that wiping the enemy is basically only required when taking castles from the enemy. You should aim to win with as few units as possible, though having ashigaru in every fight helps tremendously since replenishing them is four times cheaper than other units.

Rance is basically a bug in the Planner System. He has no level cap in a world where level 40 makes you one of the most powerful mortal warriors.

TLDR though, the Rance world has certain rules, everyone can train their skills any way they want but they all have a "cap", meaning farmers can only be good at fighting until a certain level. Rance, however, is a freak of nature with no level cap, meaning he has infinite potential to be powerful. Also yes its also the sword.

His.main advantage is having no level cap so if he does get experience he can become stronger than a lot of things. Not levels are easy come easy go and Rance lacks the discipline to maintain his levels.

Chaos is sentient and chooses the weilder. He feels a kinship with Rance but it's not like he's the exclusive user. Chaos and Nikkou can breach the barrier fiends have that make them impervious to most things.

There's this theory he is the son of Gai, a Demon King from before the series. But that's most certainly a meme.

The main reason he's so strong is his lack of a level cap, so he can level up to infinity if he put effort into it. Also he has a very good skillset (Sword Combat and Adventuring, both Lv 2 or A-Rank in your typical tier list). Finally according to a diviner he has the best luck one can have in this setting without having it as a skill.

Do give it a go if you like dungeon crawlers, or simply like Rance. One or the other. Would probably only not recommend it if you've got a distaste for both.

So if you have a spare character when in a dungeon and you have them retreat, you can shuffle the characters back and forth indefinitely?
But if your deployed characters are your last characters, retreat just sends them back and you're tough out of luck? That's slightly annoying. I'll have to count characters whenever they're done for.

No, the Hero just gets stronger the more the Protagonist Race is decimated. The Hero cannot be killed.... that said they are not invincible. They can be wounded, maimed, tortured, digested, gored, etc but won't die ever.
However, the tenure of a Hero only lasts 7 years, from age 13 to 20. After that they have none of their Hero abilities and the title passes to someone else.

The hero will never die so long as he's the hero, no matter what.

He's very selfish, but because he's selfish he can be used as a force for good.

But in the final stage of the dungeon I retreated but my character wasn't replaced with anyone (because there was no benched unit with actions left and I messed up), then I retreated another character in hopes of getting back the character I foolishly retreated away. Except that didn't work and I just lost yet another character.

Just grab orbs as you achieve other objectives. I never really felt like I was "grinding" orbs until the post game.

If you retreat a character, they're done for dungeon even if they have moves left.

No, the best in the series is Kichikuou, followed by Sengoku and X, which doesn't have great gameplay but the story is amazing. Kichikuou is pretty much the ultimate Rance, it's like every game's story is contained in it (they changed a lot of the story of games posterior to it though. Kou and Xavier are really different from their Sengoku counterpart for example)

The current Era of LP is relatively peaceful since Demon King Little Princess is contained and the Antagonist Race/Fiends are warring each other.
The Hero's power is dependent on a the Protagonist Race being on the brink of devastation.
Additonally the Hero levels up slower than other people although he cannot lose levels and has a level cap of 99.
So Arios the current Hero is doing shitty fetch quests while Rance does all the heroic stuff.

The hero is running around stuck on sidequests and they meet once in background lore, after so long he got too old and lost his powers and there was no candidate in the meantime, he gets his hero powers back and is a pain in the ass in 10.

I believe they have fought before X. He injured Rance but was unable to kill him.

The hero is more of a failsafe than a force of justice: Given how strong Demons and the Demon King are, the Gods made the Hero as a deterrence so they don't go batshit crazy and slaughter the Protagonist Race completely.

The game won't let you, there just will be no "declare war" option.

Yamagata has 8 in all stats. He can also attack the backrow. He also has a buff that boosts all of his stats at the start of a battle. Shoen is the same, but with slightly worse stats.
Takeda commanders are flat out some of the best commanders in the game. I think the only house that can compete is Dokangryuu, and that's thanks to Omachi.

You can't attack Shimazu unless you're playing on Ran's route, where Xavier gets sealed before he can form the Demon Army, or Kill The Monkey, where Xavier never gets unsealed in the first place. They are pretty fucking annoying to fight though because they can randomly cause one of your female commanders to defect, which is actually needed for an optional way to beat them.

Dungeon are awful busywork, they mostly boil down to trying to save the best units with enough actions to the bottom floor.
The weaker fodder can be dealt with lvl 30 and up units, start out with those first as well as ninjas with the dungeon expert skill since those reduce the amount of enemies you encounter. Swap out units that have used all their actions and only use Rance, Kenshin, Urza etc when you really need them.

Road to Hades is the second hardest Dungeon, and yeah Gunagan is a bitch. If you retire you can start where you left from, not sure what happens if you lose.

Gunagan is a special superboss there's relly no benefit of beating him other than a CG for bragging rights.

If you wanna go for it though proceed until floor 17 and attack him the next turn, you'll need almost a full roster of unique commanders to stand a chance, specially the Fiend that joins you at late game

This is the second hardest dungeon in the game.
When you try to do this (and especially) orochi. you need to have done quite a few other dungeons for the levels and have 20+ decent level commanders

The only way to recruit her is to reject Kensei's offer when he takes over the house and beat the living shit out of the remaining army, which should by all means be massively reduced by that point because Kensei is a fucking moron and removes 70% of the house's armed forces just because he insists women should stay in the kitchen.

Yeah it involves beating the Takuga group and clearing their characters.

You need to raise their stats, but for the most part a lot of early game units that you find are kind of shit. Best way to get decent units early on is to call in reinforcements but that requires quite a bit of satisfaction.

You have to reduce them to one territory to get the offer.

The offer only happens after you've been at war with them for quite some time. I think it happens eventually after you've conquered their first province and have been cockblocked from conquering in their second one for a couple of turns.

I retreated at floor 17 though, but when I exited I was met with picture related. Kind of felt like something of a kick in the gut.
On my previous attempt when I lost on floor 18 it said 0 afterwards. But now after my second attempt and after retreating after floor 17, it just says 1. That barely helps me at all!

No, it just lowers their morale rating and "wastes" an action. You can usually besides a few fights take any territory without doing it, some fights are trickier and require some good commanders to take before the turns are used up.

You are doing fine since you are on war with both. The first run has a trigger where if you declare war on either Uesugi or Hojo and ignore the other one, Takeda conquers the house you didn't declare war on within couple of turns.
Mouri also does the same for Tanegashima and Akashi.

It's really easy to defend territories unless you picked a fight with someone dangerous really early on. You can let them take a few territories if need be as long as you don't let them completely take one.

There is essentially no penalty if the enemy captures an individual holding within your area, as long as you don't lose them all.

Get one foot soldier and 1-2 high damage units for the front row
Maximize casualties on their side.
Remember that each faction can only attack once per turn.

This. If an enemy keeps counterattacking to retake lost territory on their own ground, you can just reload until they decide to assault on one of your territories that is not about to be taken over.

It depends. Fuuka from your first province is weak but can be important later, Mino three lead to one of the cheese or, dare I say, slimy character. As for prisoners, most uniques and half-uniques are at least decent, and some non-uniques can generate with great stats.

Elina is good, others are so-so. You should aim for house bonuses if you want to start ng+ with really good characters.

Diviner is okay because she's the only diviner you can get early outside of house bonuses. The monk is godlike at soloing battles early to mid game with the -50/-100 damage item.

the only state worth vassaling is tenshi. the rest give no benefits. for actually conquering a state, you usually get some sex and commanders. you don't get that if you vassal them.
tenshi gives you seigan if you keep them alive, so it could be worth it

Shengin is one of the best monks in the game as far as I'm concerned. I forget how you get him though. I think you gotta declare war and force them to surrender before the gourds start breaking.

All-Guard if you can raise his Int a lot.
The upgraded Ally-Guard and the passive skill that has them start with tons of guard if not.

Don't conquer their last area. Finish the event at honnouji and wait a turn or two, they should ask to cease hostilities as a beginning of turn event.

You can send Senhime into autolose battles to avoid this risk.

Do not bum rush Mouri if you want to go full maids. If you fight them for awhile you should get an option or cutscene for an "All Out Battle", which will be something like Rance + your choice vs Mouri and all 3 daughters. If you win you get a province no matter how big it is, if you lose Mouri will pick Rance up and twist him apart in his bare hands. After the All Out Battle you can take the maids as POWs normally.

If you get all three you get a great flavor cutscene with Mouri. If you wanna bang Kiku you need to build affection until she dares you to beat up her dad.

The only good thing about the Big Boy Mouri is that he always does a 200 damage no matter the enemy, which is only really useful for routes that involve a lot of dungeon diving.

Magnum fixed the story scope problem and it's super replayable with the way it handles NG+ cycles

Damn. I did recall something like this. But after a couple of turns of nothing and I started to question whether or not it'd happen at all. So I figured it was likely an event that'd happen when they got cornered, so I cranked my offense up to the max and calimed all their territories.

So always leave at least two of their territories until you get the all-out battle then? One that can be given to you which I guess is a prequisite for the event, and another so that they can remain themselves afterwards?

Use, get Rance attack or wait a little bit and use it to get reinforcements from another country (You need to wait for Rance to mention his other adventures offhand for that to show up)
Don't bother with Kabuki or the other shit unless you just feel like messing around

Also if you get the mino three later you can get a special unit with a satisfaction bonus

Vassaling is pointless, but Tenshiism (and to a small extent Tokugawa) are the only houses worth doing it to.

is there any specific unit type to counter these or do i just have to increase troop count on my shitters until i can overpower them? any newfag tips welcome

He means fights where you're guaranteed to lose due to story reasons. For example, trying to fight Kenshin with Rance in the army will make you autolose. You'll only know what fights that'll happen in after your second playthrough or so its kinda useless advice.
