Why doesnt anyone just make a nextgen lazer and optical disc that would have a speed of read at least as hdd?

Just insert disc and play.
No installation needed.

Are you fucken retarded?

Go look up how HDDs work compared to disk, there's a reason you can't take the platters out and finger fuck them you mong.

tl;dr: science forbids it.

why don't lazy devs just stop building their games with 50gb install space and 20gb day-one patches in mind?
never had an issue up until the seventh gen

Big sizes divert piracy.
At least they seem to think so.
Also nobody knows how to compress shit anymore.

SHIEET
So is there only a cartridge can be use for that simplicity then?

>but muh flac audio and 4k textures

>So is there only a cartridge can be use for that simplicity then?
Practically.

>Also nobody knows how to compress shit anymore.
More like they don't care any more, in the west especially.
Meanwhile, some slav fucks made the entire Escape From Tarkov to be mere 4GB in total.

Just make the base game smaller and offer the rest of what would be in a 50GB download as free DLC

>We are progressive and pro-nature.
>Make 50+20Gb games so internet and electric infrastructure work more.

fucking dumbass zoomers dont know anything

They don't compress shit because the hardware is at the limit. Decompression is lost performance.

I think at the very least downloads should be sorted. I don't need uncompressed audio at 485 GB. I will never use the lowest textures. Give me a few clicks to decide what I'm getting and stop eating up so much space. I've started avoiding certain companies that consistently have massive filte sizes. And if you hit me with more than one 20+ patch I'm out. Shit is ridiculous.

...are you a literal moron?
"Compression" in game development does NOT mean that you pack shit into Zip files.
Rather, you CONVERT your Hi-Qu assets into compressed, lossy forms, saving storage space and memory while loading 'em up.

It definitly means both.

And if you do the latter, then the pixelfuckers on Yea Forums will point it out in a heartbeat.

>It definitly means both.
you literally fail at game design if you need to succumb to compressing your asset archives.

>pixelfuckers
if there is a need to whine about it, your art-directing must suck ass.

3d optical data storage can store a few terabytes. Its not practical though. Maybe itll become worth it as a niche market for 8k or even 16k movie if streaming bandwith doesnt increase significantly but until then its a trail not woth perusing

>More like they don't care any more
It's a small amount of that but more than a few davs have outright said the real reason is they think larger sizes will put off people pirating them. Dumb as fuck and it only punishes people who actually buy their games.

>you literally fail at game design if you need to succumb to compressing your asset archives.
They don't need to.
They can just make you install 100GB.

yet they look like ass, because 0 effort put into art directing.

Are they try to monopolize your hard by their 80gb+ games so you cannot easily play other ones?

That only works on console babbies

I mean...
It's kinda a shit format

I wish the next console generation would ship games on SSDs.

Why would they from their point of view?

there isn't any difference between flash media. flash media is flash media. those are SSDs.

Massive performance gains.

>there isn't any difference between flash media.
Of course there are you dipshit. Not all flash media is made equal.

Why don't you keep your stupid navel-gazing to yourself?

What the fuck are you talking about, cocksnot?

>Larger sizes will put off people from pirating them
What kind of mental gymnastics did those people do? If you can't afford to pirate the game due to its size you also won't ever buy the game due to the download size.
Inb4 buying physical.

I mean....I'm sure it could be done lol. In the past you inserted a disc and the game came on immediately. Installing games (on console at least) is a fairly new thing.

Those games were much smaller and the loading times were painful.
HDDs have major advantages over optical, most of all having multiple platters you can read from. Seek times are also better when you don't have a laser having to look for its target.
