To actually answer your question without joking about trash ff8, the correct choices are ff6, ff7 or ff9. Granted probably make ff6 your 2nd or 3rd FF just because the older style will put you off.
FF10 should be your 4th or 5th final fantasy.

I will eventually finish it. The story was memorable enough and I liked most of the characters.
Hell the game was that good that Tales of Symphonia copy-pasted the whole story, which is one of the reasons why I wasn't so keen on finishing FFX since it just felt exactly like Symphonia.
