Is it just me, or is The Thousand-Year Door not as amazing as everyone says it is? I’m a fan of rpgs so I figured I’d try it out, and it’s not bad but not great in my opinion. The battle system is fun but the backtracking in almost every chapter is so tedious, especially 6 chapters in like I am right now. Can anyone tell me why it’s so beloved?

>can anyone tell me why it's so beloved?
nostalgia
I would say its a bit overrated but i only beat it for the first time like 3 months ago. Still really loved it and will replay it somewhat soon
Fun characters and locations.
The battle system and dialogue cancel out the shitty backtracking for a lot of people. But yeah, its probably the most backtrack-heavy game ive ever played. I mean holy FUCK every area is a straight line they really shit the bed in the level design department
For introducing nintendos best girl
The beginning of chapter 7 legit made me want to neck myself. It's not the best game ever made, but the charm of how things happened left me wishing it had a proper sequel.
Mario RPGs in general are quite simple so they might not be the big deal for a seasoned RPG gamer, also I blame it on the console it came out for, the GameCube look at the fanbases of some of those games.
Right, it's a bit overrated.
NOBODY TELL HIM
>girl
user...
play 64
less backtracking, more charm, slightly more boring combat but i prefer it overall
Intelligent Systems had a phase where they thought being self aware and cheeky about making you repeat tedious tasks was acceptable game design. This shit persisted in Super Paper Mario.
>more charm
The flaws are only really noticeable on a replay, the first time I played it I didn't notice the backtracking. I hated chapter 2 regardless though.
Because Gamecube babbies (zoomers that were born between the years of 1994 and 1998) grew up only playing it so they're under the delusion that games like Mario Sunshine, Double Dash, TTYD, Mario Parties 4-6, Wind Waker, Billy Hatcher, etc are good games. They are not. Gamecube babbies are a cancer upon this board.
>Literally btfo's Yea Forums
Mario party 4-6 are mediocre and I never played Billy Hatcher but the other ones are great.
I remember Ch. 6 being one of the best along with Ch. 3 on a first playthrough and then found it quite dull on a replay, though I still love its train setting. That being said, it's still miles better than dealing with 4 and 5's habit of making you run back and forth through the level's path with almost no variation.
Its the characters and that you can tell love was put in to it. People say 64 and TTYD had the best story, but 64 barely had one, but it was filled with great characters, humor and chill music.
holy fuck. you don't like something popular. we get it. you're special. can anyone make a thread about literally anything else?
See
You do know that people born in 1994 are 25 now right? That’s way too old to be posting here
>That’s way too old to be posting here
user, all the oldfags that haven't an heroed have a grey hair somewhere, probably on their balls. You're posting with greyballs. Don't forget.
ttyd is okay but 64, superstar saga, bowser's inside story, and super mario rpg are all better mario rpgs imho
It's amazing on the very first playthrough. After that though you can see that the game is clearly padded out and has some unnecessary backtracking.
> t. Boomer
honestly because most people played it back when it was new and/or they were young, so the backtracking was tolerable to them
64 is superior in every way except for some battle QoL but you can survive without it
It's only put on a pedestal because it was the last traditional Paper Mario game.
>we have now reached a point where bait-contrarianism on Yea Forums is so bad that actual masterpieces are being openly derided
this is why I stopped coming here
It scratches the Paper Mario itch. But it's true. Not really that great, it could have been so much more. The audience mechanics is super hilarious though. One of the best things I've seen in turn based games yet
More like thousand year BORE amirite?
>gameinformer headline from 15 years ago
legit cancelled my subscription after that trash ass review
Why would even play any of these papershit games when you could just play SMRPG?
Mental defects?
Drug addiction?
Lost a bet?
Shit taste?
So fat that they can no longer think straight?
SMRPG aged badly
It's still a good introduction to the JRPG genre.
>but the backtracking in almost every chapter is so tedious, especially 6 chapters in like I am right now. Can anyone tell me why it’s so beloved?
I beat it recently and the backtracking is fucking awful like you said. It's specially bad with the sidequests because even if you wait to unlock the warp pipes you still need to go back and forth between Rogueport, the balloon and the sewers. Beyond that it's an excellent game with good story and gameplay.
While I do agree that Cubebabies are cancer, the first party library is alright. The games have some kind of major flaw that stops them from being a 10/10 but they are still good enough otherwise.
I can definitely see people having issue with the amount of backtracking involved with the moon cannon. But otherwise I don't really get why people bitch so much about the backtracking.
Its flaws are incredibly minuscule compared to flaws of modern day games.
>implying the dick doesn't make it even better
At least it wasn't as bad as the fucking N64, what a hunk of hot garbage.
I like Super Paper Mario more.
best mario RPG imo
I don't know about BEST, personally I think Bowser's Inside Story beats it out. But it's definitely underrated. Every single aspect of SPM is kino except for the actually running and jumping, which just isn't.
If SPM had been literally the same thing, but with TTYD's true 3D environments and battle system, it'd be the best Mario RPG by a landslide - however as it stands, it's an above average RPG with a great story and subpar gameplay.
Fun characters and a good combat system. I never felt put out by the backtracking, at most I sighed and did it anyway.
