Hey there Yea Forums. I have an unhealthy obsession with Bethesda RPGs and have spent an ungodly amount of time tinkering with them in various ways. Some of you may remember when I made threads about creating a "viral NPC' in Oblivion. Those tests had some significant successes. However, near the end of that idea, some anons suggested trying a similar concept in Skyrim SE. That brings us to today. I've done some preliminary work to make the base for a viral NPC in Skyrim, but I'll need the help of you brave anons to refine and perfect it. To that end, I'll be posting progress here as we attempt to let the NPC spread across all of Skyrim.

Clones are meant to be hostile to everything except the player and other clones. They have a spell to infect another NPC if the target has low health, which turns the NPC into a clone. Clones also have a power they can use when on low health which has either splits them into two new clones or evolves them. Every Sunday at midnight each clone randomly picks a city or town and travels there. Those are the basics.

I believe they can, although if they evolve enough they will get a weapon anyway. What I meant was that they currently evolve down a linear progression, which I'm hoping I can somehow change to a more random one that still works and makes sense.
That would probably work. The ideal place is somewhere with enough people that the clones will have groups of 3+ heading out when Sunday arrives, but I don't want to make it too easy for them.
Well the infection almost died before passing 5 members due to the guards. Luckily for the clones the more squishy NPCs joined the fight and got infected. The town is falling pretty quickly.
From what I've seen they do, though they "dislike" human NPCs more faction-wise.
Also I... apparently started the test on a Sunday, which means that as soon as everyone in the outside of the town was dead the travel behavior kicked in and now the clones are running off to a random town or city. I wonder if they have enough numbers to do well.
How many clones are there currently? If they kill/clone enough animals along the way they might be able to overpower the town

They still travel to their destinations even when we're not observing them, and they have a behavior to automatically use their split or evolve power every Saturday night. However, I'm not clear on they're able to infect NPCs when the player isn't in the area.
I'm not currently. This was a tricky thing in the Oblivion runs. I like this site and don't want to get banned for advertising a stream, and my intention is not to advertise myself. If I do start a stream of this, I've made it a rule for myself that I cannot post my stream name here. You'd have to find it yourselves.

On the contrary actually, each clone decides "for itself," essentially, what town or city to head to. That way they spread out more quickly.
I count about 12 in the group heading North. I have some bad news for it, though.
Would be cool to make it into a mod where they hunt the player. Like, they start traveling towards you from the other side of the map after you leave the tutorial zone, and only kill hostile NPC's they stumble upon or something like that.

It could if they successfully infected it, but they didn't in this case, they just killed it. I could probably add something that distributes clones based on health or something like that, I think. Good idea user.
Steel equipment. It isn't until Tier 3 (Dwarven with a custom hood so we can easily track specific Tier 3s, and a sword) that it becomes really significant. Also I haven't made the Tier 6s yet as there was in the Oblivion version because I wanted to make them special this time around. That'll follow in future tests.
Pic related is stragglers in Rorikstead. It appears that South group splintered into many smaller groups to hunt down wildlife and add to its numbers.

North has 2 Tier 3s now! I forgot to mention, if a clone infects NPCs it can skip evolution steps. I.e. if a clone infects 3 people it will skip to Tier 2.

Someone explain to me how that even works. I remember bugged NPC in both Skyrim and Oblivion randomly wandering the map and ocassionaly bumping into them. But are their actions actually calculated while they are not onscreen? I thought they just wandered some pseudo world map or something. Simulating diseases would be interesting. I actually have a mod installed in The Sims 3 that does exactly that. It simulates infection chance, incubation time and can evolve different more severe strains. It works realtime and you can even tinker with it and make your own diseases. Why not install something like Sexlab defeat, and instead of letting them kill each other let them fuck. Every NPC that gets fucked is now infected with some sort of sexual rabies and is looking for new victims. Imagine all the gangrapes, beautiful.

I think it would be interesting if they started out as animal/low tier NPC's, then evolve over time into other beings, including humans. They could also have something like fusion where if two or more clones are low on health, they can decide to fuse and become a different stronger creature. The fusion outcomes could be randomized to a certain degree allowing for "mutations" to occur.

They can travel, and 'be' somewhere, but they won't be active until they are properly loaded in. They basically work like little RTS units when traveling outside of the player's gaze.

What are the rules of this infection? Is it on-kill that a person becomes a clone, or is it an inevitability that a person who comes in contact with a clone becomes a clone themselves?
Is the levelling dependent on a clones number of infections, or damage it takes?

Yea, I'm gonna have Travel fixes be priority #1 for the next test. They're key to the mod functioning properly and for the infection to spread as it should.
Next will be fixing evolution tiers so the clones don't take their armor off after evolving. Perhaps I'll make the evolutions a bit more unique - and Tier 6s will come with this, as well.
Quest Markers on certain clones, probably ones that are Tier 3+, is after that on the list. Once all these are done I'll turn my attention to readding the features that the Oblivion version had (again, I recommend anyone who wasn't around for that one to look it up. It was great), such as Opposing Clones, Doctors, Crusaders, and perhaps a formal Nickies Black npc.
I'm gonna hang around here if any anons want to brainstorm more features to add, I'll post the screenshots I took tonight as well.
Haven't laughed that hard in a long time. I am looking forward to your next test and the carnage.

Infection works via a spell that can turn an NPC into a clone and disable the original, and it has a chance to succeed once the target NPC's health drops below a threshold. Leveling is caused by a clone reaching low health but a clone who has infected a number of NPCs may skip an evolution tier or two depending on how many it's infected.

The limit actually wasn't until speed crashed the game, it was until the game engine ran out of integers to describe my position. I don't really get it either, some user calculated the size of the in-game universe based on said integers to be way way larger than the physical universe irl.
It's not integers, position is measured in a double-sized floating point. the further you get from 0,0,0 the less digits it has for measuring decimal places and you lose floating point precision. there's a guy walking to the end of the map in minecraft (has been for 12 years and at current pace will finish in the 2030s) and while he's barely a quarter of the way there you can see loads of precision errors in pc/npc movement and animation
