platforming sections are shit, game barely lets you see whats below you and there are floors filled with spikes (that insta kill you), death holes, floor that crumbles apart and other bullshit
map is also shit and warping areas are so far apart from each other that you constantly have to backtrack a lot of bullshit areas

Pretty alright. Aesthetic is kinda fun but I can't get into it seriously at all.
Gameplay feels satisfying but is way too simple. Easily the worst part of the game.

Gameplay is mediocre. Literally 16bit era metroidvania with super basic movement and combat. It has a parry button and that's about the extent of its attempt to emulate Soulslike combat. Might as well be Hollowknight with a parry button and a christian setting.
The animations and pixel art are nice when they're actually trying, but they clearly didn't have the time or budget to maintain that quality beyond some cherry picking for a trailer. Around 50% of the enemies in the game have 1 single animated attack. The other 50% have zero animated attacks and just deal damage by moving into you or firing some megaman plasma orb.
The platforming is terrible, with the visual design making it difficult to judge the exact edges of platforms. Since movement is extremely basic their only means of making the platforming challenging is to put near pixel perfect jumps over instant death pits which is a great way to waste your time.
There's zero RPG elements, functionally zero choice in how you equip the character, progression is numbers getting bigger and a few skill unlocks which are generic enough that they could have been starting abilities and nobody would have been impressed.
Those are the cons. The pros are that the obtuse lore is atmospheric, takes effort to piece together, is near fully voice acted and the voice acting isn't even bad and there's a lot of interesting design / cutscenes / mini-stories going on.
That's my shitty review, don't buy if you're looking for in-depth combat and gameplay, buy it if you think the setting and visual design are cool and want to know more about the world and story.
obvious flaws aside, it's the best in the genre in a long while, would play again

Thoroughly enjoyed my time and in the middle of my 2nd playthrough. Complaints about platforming and combat probably coming from shitters and whiners. Gr8 game. This will be remembered.

This. When it looks good it looks damn good, probably surpassing SotN in a few areas. Then you get stuff like the health lady or some of the cutscenes with bad shading and no backgrounds.

They got style down since these are the developers who made The Last Door but I feel like it could have been great instead of good if it had more development time.

Level designs seem very Ghosts and Goblins at time, with lots of stupid tedious bullshit that taxes your pixel-perfect platforming skills. Spikes will kill you more than any bosses
The bosses are almost all terrible. Ten Piedad was such a marketing gimmick because most are almost entirely static sprites

Voice acting is mostly god awful (Cristanta, looking at you), should have had an option for it to be in Spanish with subs.
Did I miss anything? Its a cool game but its underwhelming because I really just wanted it to be a bit better. I still am glad it exists and hope for a sequel.
This is exactly what I mean. If they listen to criticism and attempt a sequel with more dev time/cash they can make something great. As it is it falls short which is a shame. In a perfect world they would keep working on this but it's impractical to do that with single player games.

I cleared it in 14hrs and 90% of my deaths were spikes or death pits. Majority of bosses went down on the first attempt, last boss took 2 attempts. They can't have had much passion for the way the game played, everything is just *functional* as a vessel for their art and themes and nothing more.

The problem with the music is that it has no character and it's very repetitive. Take SotN for example: every area uses a different style, different instruments to make it stand out. In Blasphemous the majority of the tracks use the same flamenco chord progression (which is already common as fuck outside vidya), it ends up becoming a blur.

Bloodstained still looks generally worse than this game does in it's bad parts.
I enjoyed both, though.
I'm halfway into it and I give it a 10/10.
