Vista was good, it's just that most PCs weren't prepared for it and "Vista Capable" meant that it met the minimum requirements for Home Basic.
7 is just Vista with the benefit of driver developers having gotten used to Vista's changes and mass market hardware finally catching up to the OS.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Windows 10,
is in fact, Windows 10/Candy Crush, or as I've recently taken to calling it, Candy Crush plus Windows 10.

Vista was actually pretty good. The problem was that it used technology that was immature at the time. Windows 7/10 for example is running natively on WPF and doesn't actually support Win32 anymore. Meanwhile Vista used WPF, but at the same time emulated Win32 and WinForms, making it a solid platform that allows modern and old software to work perfectly fine at the same time. It's in a way similiar to how Windows 98 SE and the other NT2000 systems had their place.
