It's more of a novelty. It sits in this awkward limbo area where it's technically better than using a regular controller for fps, but it doesn't surpass m+kb. Similarly, it works fine for games that were developed with a controller in mind, but at that point it's more comfortable to just use a regular controller.

Honestly, if they made another revision that featured a proper d-pad, a better analog stick, and sightly bigger face buttons then I'd probably use it all the time.

The track pad, especially combined with gyro, works really well for camera movement. The biggest issue is that a good chunk of games don't support it. The game needs to let you use both a controller and mouse at the same time, but many games will only have one enabled at a time. You are then left using the track pad to emulate an analog stick, which ends up feeling worse than just using an analog stick.

I know that controllers feeling. I really tried to give the Steam controller a chance, but having to spend 2 hours to bind everything just wasn't my idea of fun.

I really wish Valve just had a "camera-focused" or whatever they call the "normal controller" options available for all the non-controller enabled games like Just Cause.

Once they put in DS4 and X-box controller support into their controller API's, the Steam Controller was killed.

Either the PS4 controller if you want shit battery life, or a Nintendo Switch Pro controller if you want longer/almost infinite battery life but a bulkier setup.
I have both and enjoy them both to be honest, but the PS4 one is annoying as fuck to have to charge every 4-5 hours of gameplay. Pro controller I literally charge it once every month and a half on average.

Nah, they're still one of the kind in that regard, that part does rather well too, the problem's the fucking thumbstick. It has hardware faults where thumbstick clicks might work, might not work in anything but zero position. Also most of /vrg/ users I know, myself included had drifting and deadzone issues by the end of first month of use. The thumbstick component has like 50 hours life expectancy. Some people have trouble with the triggers and shit, but I think those are lemons, while YOU WILL have trouble with the thumbsticks eventually.
Also personally I think the shitty pill-shaped trackpad is the worst of two worlds. Not responsive enough as a d-pad, not precise enough as a Vive Trackpad. It certainly lacks shoulder buttons and extra C/D buttons, but that's just me.
They're pretty great, as long as they work, the problem is it's not usually very long.
I had issues with mine after the first weekend. I'm already on a second pair as I had to RMA my first one the drift got so bad.
