I live in Tokyo, I rent a massive 3 bedroom apartment for much less than in other big capitals of the world (MUCH less). Tokyo housing market is crazy cheap, and its amazing public transport has insane coverage throughout all wards so you don't need to live in the rich/upscale/financial areas to feel like you're not missing out. It's probably among the cheapest most liveable big capitals/metropolis of the world, and that's the most expensive place in Japan. Go to Kyoto, Osaka, or any other smaller cities and the rent plummets and standard of living remains high too.
Lots of commodities here are socialized, you have national healthcare, much broader range of schools available (from the most expensive international ones, to the cheapest and very affordable local ones).
If you compare Tokyo to your average city in another country, yes it's more expensive (but salaries reflect that as well), but if you compare it to other capitals... no way, Tokyo wins.

You're going to have to do arranged marriages. Japan's working conditions have drastically improved in the last ~10-15 years. Lots of new regulations to reduce mandatory overtime and boss pressure on their coworkers. It has way more holidays and PTO than America, for instance. There's still a long way to go to get European/France working standards (which are the golden standards these days), but we're getting there. It's far from the worst country to work in, and yet people still say this because they are still stuck 20 years ago.
