Gamers/students

Gamers/students,

I am about to start taking college computer classes and have a computer dilemma. I currently have a 2015 MacBook Pro which I’ve heard is good for school but not for gaming. My question is should I use the MacBook Pro for school and buy a gaming desktop, or should I buy a gaming laptop and use it for both school and gaming?

Never ever buy a gaming laptop.

I would definitely recommend using the MacBook Pro for school and buy a gaming desktop. Gaming desktops are generally cheaper than a gaming laptop and having seperate devices for gaming and work makes it easier to focus when you are working

get a desktop

>good for school
the fuck you mean
what do you even use it for in school? write?

>use it for both
don't do this. keep your shit separated.

>buys a gaming laptop for coding
NGMI. Just change majors now

OP is probably a faggoty digital art "student" or something.

Gaming laptops gonna have a shit battery that youll need to carry the charger for, the Mac should have a battery good enough for use through class and be lighter which is what really matters.

gaming laptop? are those real?

Install gentoo.

Unless there is a specific feature that you 100% know you need a MacBook for, you don't need a MacBook.
Windows laptops offer more (and better) options and perform better for less money. Don't waste money on Appleshit unless you absolutely need to.

Buy a cheap normal laptop and a gaming desktop
The price of macbooks is ridiculous and the build quality sucks
Unless you NEED mac OS don't bother

Wait a fucking second,
You are using a mac primarily in a cs class or IT class?
Fucking retard you are never going to make it.
If it is coding (cs) use that mac if you want for school but people will laugh at you (unless it is web dev then people hate you for not using mac).
In IT using a mac means you are a low IQ shitter who cannot learn to mess with computers which is the whole Fucking point. Your classmates will hate you unless they are shitters as well and your teachers will hate you.
For IT get a shit windows laptop that you can fuck around with. It is so much better and if something goes wrong you can just fix it easily.
Get a gaming pc midrange. Never get a gaming laptop they are awful and die off after a year since they have no way to deal with excess heat.
The only computer class it is fully expected to have a mac is web dev. Everything else you will be hated by others and will run into problems with software. (Basic shit is annoying with apple products since you need an apple dev account to install something as basic as git).

When I was in uni I had a laptop specifically for work that wasn't capable of running anything too extensive, and a desktop at home for games. It helped me stay focused and I would definitely recommend spending money on a good desktop over a laptop.

First off I should ask this?
What is OP major?
Cs or IT.
If it is IT you won't make it but if it is CS you are fucked anyways since indians exist and will always be better than OP.

by a chrome book/ competent used laptop for 200 or less

then use the shit load of money you would have payed out the ass for a gaymin laptop upgrading your current desktop or building your own.

sure its not portable but who the hell really plays serious games on the go. I would never even imagine bringing my 3ds in public and looking look a weeb faggot. My degeneracy is for the basement only.

>chrome book
Why the fuck would you buy a computer with a fucking expiration date. After X time from a Chromebook model being released it wont get updates. You could buy the laptop a week before that time and not know, as the timer starts ticking from the day the model is released not from when the computer is sold

Honest just better to buy a cheap windows laptop at least then you have a fully functional computer

It will still have support if you replace the os with linux and manage it yourself.
Chrome os is fucking dogshit. OP if you get a chromebook install gentoo.

i used a chrome book in one of my classes and it worked fine enough. I don't own one though, didn't know about the expiration date

i have a cheap asus i got for 200 and it worked great for 2 years before i accidentally broke the screen.

point being, you don't need super expensive tech if you just going to need it for browsing the internet, ms word, and checking emails.

it would be better to get a basic reliable notebook for that shit and with the money you save put into an actual gaming pc

I'd still personally avoid a Chromebook:

Gaming laptop is an oxymoron. The high end is ridiculously expensive and not portable plus warps after a few years and nearly all instances. The next tier are midrange at best when compared to desktops and run worse on battery. It’s always been this way.

This, but it doesn`t work you`ll end up using the gaming pc for every thing only occasionaly using the macbook pro, go for it OP.

Alright, serious advice then: Just bought (co paid) my GF a laptop since she needed one for her studies as well.
Finally decided on a Lenovo Ideapad with a GTX1650 and i5 9300H.
It's been very solid so far, goes quite way in games as well actually. Would recommend.
Still, having the luxury of already haviing a designated school laptop: and wanting to play games as well: going desktop route is the better choice for gaming purposes. It's better value for money, plus: I think it's nicer to have a game oriented setting with speakers and monitor set up.

it doesn't surprise me that google pulls this shit.
i would just stick with a cheap asus, like i said, it lasted 2 years of near constant use of school/shitposting/emulation before i broke it by dropping it like a retard.

>Co paid user
Just why?
Just don't tell me it was over 500 dollars since you could have used that for a nice date or actual decent shit like a diy drone kit.

Honestly OP, if your in school you should focus all your time on your studies/socialization. You can do what you want but videogames are demonstrably addictive and you don't want it to take away from what is really important here.

I put away all my systems in the closet when i started school, and only went back into them when i had to drop out due to finical issues

Birthday, she needs one anyway for studies: and just paying for a case and 'build in monitor'without at least somewhat future proofing it seemed even more of a waste of money than paying a bit more and getting more value.

>buying a gayman laptop
dont, especially for school

>not socializing through games
Disgusting, i bet you and your normgroid friends entertain eachother by getting drunk every weekend.

If it isn't already obvious, don't buy a gaming laptop. Not only is it stupid to begin with, but you will look like a loser to everybody else in your lectures and rightly so

just get an acer aspire 5 for $300 and ride that all the way to graduation and use all those crazy job offers for a big boi laptop

lol. I live in the middle of the fucking rural midwest with a 1 mb internet connection, so all of the games i played were strategy and rpg games.

wait a second, are you telling me you actually have real friends, Norman?

get a desktop just use the MacBook for school

consumer advice belong to /wsr/

Don't listen to Yea Forums or /g/. They think it's still the early 2000's when laptops couldn't handle gaming. Do you even have space in the dorm for the desktop and peripherals? Do you really want to carry a separate device to class and wish you brought the gaming one to play in the lounge? I think the decision is obvious.

>He thinks laptops don't get full of dust and thermal throttle
>Opening it to clean it out voids the warranty
Gaming laptops are fucking heavy in addition to the expense
Best off just getting a cheap laptop and a desktop for games

>Opening it to clean it out voids the warranty

Most laptops can be easily opened nowadays with a single screw and there isn't any tape to void the warranty. You're only gonna mess it up if you were opening a surface laptop.

Just get Openemu and emulate 4th and 5th gen games.

In my senior year of high school the school get everyone a chrome book for school and I fucking hated them.
They are slow, cheap, extremely weak (even for laptop standards), annoying to use, you could barely add anything to them, and it took me a week to figure out how to fucking right-click.
