why does Saito in Hayato’s body still have his eye when swapping with Date? He shows that the eye of both participants needs to be out to psynch, so shouldn’t the eye be gone as he just came in from Renju’s body? is it just a minor plot hole?

It's a visual novel where you click where to go and what to say. When you're at a crime scene you can rotate the camera. When you're hacking someones brain you can walk around in it and choose how to solve the problem at hand.

But Uchikoshi said Hitomi was originally going to be the main heroine and her romance with Date would be one of the key plotlines. They just changed it to Iris being the main heroine instead because Uchikoshi fell in love with her design but that didn't mean the romance with Hitomi and Date got dropped. Now you have Iris as the one pushing that ship as well.

I was in the same boat as you, but the game really picks up the more you play. This is a rare case of Uchikoshi scattering plot elements and hints across all routes rather than having a blind and deaf old man in a wheelchair sitting juuuuuust out of view and only being adressed in the true ending.

The more complete picture of the mystery you get, the more hooked you'll be to play more and gather more clues.

It's pretty much entirely point and click, with two different types, first looking for clues and talking to witnesses to gather info, sort of like Phoenix Wrights investigations, and the other is trying to work out dream logic puzzles with a time limit. There are QTE shooting bits, but they barely count.

Well considering Date got captured and milked for info on the Psync machine before, having their most trouble-prone and active on-field member know info that was (to them) unnecessary for the case was just another potential risk for no reason. Also, Date losing his memories of his past also meant less evidence of shit that could damage the Police reputation.

Play it. You'll get closure on some things that VLR didn't explain and more of Sigma and Phi is always a good thing. I rank it the lowest of the trilogy but if nothing else it's an entertaining game, a rollercoaster from beginning to end. By the last third you'll laugh at how absurd it is instead of getting angry.

Yea the Mizuki psync has a point where you hae to pick between a left or right cage and depending on which one you do, it determines the branch you're on. Left side deals a lot more with Mizuki while the right is mostly Iris.

Not him but I found myself being punished for exploring and checking stuff. For example the minecraft puzzle had several doors that do nothing for the solution but if you investigate them to get some extra info or see if there are any cool hidden easter eggs or extra dialogue they drop a skull penalty time multiplier on you. Basically punishing for checking out all the various things and not just beelining the solution.

Luckily, you can just reopen the case to do what you might've missed.

So what relevance did the A-Set ARG have to the game in the end? All of the Naixatloz shit ended up being a tumor induced delusion in Iris' head. It did foreshadow Saito's consciousness in her body in one of the videos as well as the polar bear thing, but overall I don't think it really added anything to the enjoyment and understanding of the story like it was supposedly going to.

Honestly the game doesn't keep track either, since Ota and Mizuki keep the development of their own routes in the true ending.

Just finished it. Nothing amazing but not too bad either. Expected most of the twists because its just Uchis standard course.
Only thing that surprised me was that Naix didnt eventually turn out to be real.
It lacked the tension Root Double had and the Dream Room Escape sequences cant compare to Zero Escape.

I'm really glad I didn't buy this game like I originally meant to and pirated it instead.

The story is just really not very interesting at all and the twists ridiculously predictable.
I haven't played a Uchikoshi game in close to a decade, never touched the ZTD series or Punch Line, but I remembered his writing being a lot better. This one just feels super self absorbed, it thinks it's ridiculously clever when it really just isn't. You can see almost all the bigger twists coming a mile away, and when the game finally thinks it's time to confirm your theories it just wastes so much fucking time going over the same mundane explanations again and again a billion times over.
I liked most of the characters you are supposed to like, and aside from the dumb as shit action scenes it had a lot of funny interactions when you went out of your way to examine random shit, and of course Aiba's stuff in the Somniums is great, but the actual main story is just so ridiculously unsatsifying it's unbelievable. Until the credits rolled I was hoping, praying, for there to be some final reveal that just throws everything else on its head, and opens up a Part 2 of the story or something, but it just never came.

I'm now sure 999 was a fluke.
While without the retarded dance credits the game would have been good, it would still never measure up to 999 because of one simple reason. Pic fucking related. Yeah people laugh HAHA sudoku, but the moment itself where player agency is key to saving someone the MC really cares about lifts the experience up into something memorable.
You can find a climactic crowning moment like this in all of the greats. Ghost Trick has 2 of them, one with the sinking sub and then a mindblowing twist on the core gameplay mechanic where you go back 10 years to change everything.
Ace Attorney has presenting the metal detector/ Godot's profile with the ultimate penalty.
These moments make these games memorable years later because they serve as a climax, and 999 has the best one, with the main theme and the screen flip.
VLR doesn't have it but I was willing to forgive it because it ended on a cliffhanger and I thought ZTD would be all the better for it, and then ZTD didn't have it either, it just had some asspull bullshit about a terrorist (left unresolved). Now this game doesn't have it either.

I liked the atmosphere in 999. The detailed descriptions of some of the scenes and the music stuck to me, specially the one describing the corpses. In the latter games he just lets it be shown in crude 3d models with clunky animations.

This is the main thing 999 has over the other games in the series. I was constantly tense throughout 999 - in VLR and ZTD there's never any sense of danger. VLR is too soft (and solvable), and ZTD shows you you can reset right at the start.

If Boss being the killer is what you took from that scene then I'm sorry, but you probably are some kind of brain challenged and most definitely ridiculously slow on the uptake.

This game is just too... complex...

This is not my first Uchikoshi's game so I'm sure the scene was not what it seems, but still I don't like the fact I have the knowledge from an end-game ending while I'm in fact just beginning playing the game.
I wouldn't mind if it would end on a cliffhanger with protag just rushing to the office or something. The shock value wouldn't be as big, but at least I wouldn't know something that I feel I'm not supposed to know now.

I can't tell what they meant but I'm certain the line after Aiba says she's about to be turned into a pancake in Mizuki's Somnium is a reference to how Junko died in Japanese

All the other endings have about the same amount of "hints" towards what's going on.
It kind of sucks that there's those two routes that just block you from progressing, they should have just not made them available at all until you did the rest, but spoiler wise they don't exactly give you anything special, it cuts out before you could find out really much of anything concrete.

I am pretty sure I beat the game. I saw that super cringey dance routine and have that unlocked. But I'm looking at the album and seeing a few places which look like they're missing Psynch. Do some have multiple collectables or are there 2 really hidden ones?

Yeah. The two "real" ending routes just cut you off halfway through and tell you you aren't ready to progress them further yet.
The route progression is just super badly structured.
