FF7 had a much bigger sense of scale than FF6, the characters in 7 had a bit more nuance and were also more invested in the overall story, I can't think of any character development in FF6 that is on par with something like Barrett / Dyne / Marlene for example, that's not to say the characters in 6 were flat, far from it, they were just based around more traditional rpg archetypes, the charming thief, the kung fu guy, the silent pretty mage, etc

Gameplay wise I'd say they're about the same but the fun in materia growth and finding combos that end up "breaking" the game with the right setup is a blast, there's also more variety with the minigames, battle square, the optional weapon fights, the hunt for knights of the round, all contributing factors that put it ahead of FF6

FF7 is and always was a tech demo for PS1 that people sperged out over because OOT was big, and also cause FF got stolen from Nintendo consoles. I love 7 and 6 pretty equally.
but the over simplicity of 7 allows it to be an action RPG w/o suffering too much from it.
(Would be nice to have an even deeper materia system instead)

but if they were to remake 6, i dont think id be ok with the action RPG setting. But maybe im wrong. Early gameplay is pretty boring, and higher teirs still boils down to pick your strongest attacks/heals. but i feel the game has more moments of breaking the system, and far earlier, rather than waiting till the final boss in FF7, when ur still not far enough along to break the system.

some of the mechanics also wouldnt translate well, but some would be interesting.
What do you guys think about a remade from scratch FF6? (and not just an HD remake like FF4 for DS was.)

Cyan would probably be improved, due to charging leading to more damage.
Sabin wouldnt quite feel right, since its not an actual fighting game. (And probably hurt the action combat)
Choosing from a MASSIVE list of spells would be awkward.
Then characters with additional abilities like Edgar.
Followed by berserking characters like Gao, and Umaro.
And mimic from Gogo?

Over all, I just dont think FF6 would work as effectively, w/o hurting part of its system. (Would be nice to see it in higher definition though. Was wishing it was made for the DS back in the day)

Why isnt 4 at the front of the line?

gameplay wise, yes. but the script is better in the GBA version.
(the end dungeons in the GBA version are fun, but at the cost of all boss battles being less fun)

all series try to either improve, or change some stuff up. but some very core elements "usually" dont get touched.
example DQ, every game introduces new mechanics, and usually before the FF series introduces them. (not always)

but the core elements of a DQ game barely change betwen games.

FF on the other hand started to try their hand at touching very important key elements, that prior fans loved a lot, but new fans like more.

in short, its pretty normal imo.
