With rare exceptions (like the recent Spider-Man game) Western devs don't actually care about videogames anymore, they only care about looking smart and cool. Look at what they did to God of War and RDR, for example - both games are story-focused and look beautiful, but they're boring as sin to play and they're clear downgrades gameplay-wise. That's modern Western industry in a nutshell. Meanwhile, Japanese devs always try something new and they're not afraid to appear weird or childish in the eyes of gaming journos that value pretentiousness above anything else.
