Sticking to one weapon is a major problem to me. I can never find a weapon to main. I just frantically dart between GS, Hammer, lance and GL, sometimes SA and even CB(even though I'm always shit at it), but I'm never comfortable with any of them. And when I do, it feels boring. Even though I mostly stick to GS, I hate TCS spam because I spent 80% of the fight hipchecking the air and getting knocked flat on the ass. I ended up beating AT Nerg solo with wide GL shell spam.
There is just no escape. I get excited over learning a weapon and finally showing interest in something, I waste my time building it, then either utterly suck with it, do fine, but it doesn't gel with me, or get bored and repeat the same process. And I refuse to play ranged or light weapons. Monhun for me is about using an oversized, ridiculous, fuckhuge weapon with great force and impact.

When I started 10 years ago I begun with GS and I swear I did not do a single charged attack up to Alatreon. Now I’m zipping all over the place, dodging every hit and predicting where the monsters are without even looking at them. You may not find your weaponfu right away, but as long as you keep at it accruing experience an enjoy the hunt itself she’ll come to you.
A trick is using a weapon that matches your level of aggression. Because I’m all hate when I hunt I use a very aggressive weapon when I hunt, that being IG for me. That allows me to play as I enjoy the most, attacking with reckless abandon a la Metal Gear Revengeance.

The CB is a perfect weapon for Diablos/Black Diablos, assuming you use screamer pods. Every time she digs it's a free SAED. For her charges you can easily GP them.

I will not use DB, SnS, IG, LS or anything ranged. Lance looks cool, but sometimes it just doesn't sit right. I can only play shelling GL, I do terrible when I play shelless. GS seems like the obvious choice for me, but it still manages to be frustrating by the fact that now you have to be a tryhard and always go for TCS and I hate that faggotry, I can't deal with tackling for half an hour for the perfect position. Hammer was fun when I started, but the short range, it being a blunt weapon and the "big thing on a thin stick" design made me cold to the weapon, it is cool, just not exactly my thing. SA is flaily and unwieldy in sword form, has shit moveset with pointless, awkward animations which can't hit shit while its moveset is a clusterfuck with half of the moves being pointless. I wanted to go for CB, but it has a reputation of a faggot weapon type, on the same level of infamy as LS. Plus It also didn't gel with me too well. I actually thought of trying it again since they made it into a giant spinning buzz saw, but it still feels wrong and embarrassing to use.

Hammer and lance/gunlance are complimentary, things hard to kill with one are easy with the other, normal shelling is not really good in IB since monsters are too fast and the full combo is way too slow, wide should be used with the fast attacks to guard faster, long is for charged shelling or just as a worse wide, SA really depends if it sticks with you, if it doesn't don't bother with it, LS is pretty good but becomes fun only when you can reliably use the foreskin slash, i personally don't like CB but many people say that it's good and easy to use so just try it

With nerg weapons, you dont need handicraft at all. On top of that, you dont need the MT set bonus, just the razor sharp charm. On top of all that, meta sets wont work shit in endgame because Tempered EDs are fucking strong

No you have to fully reset from the very beginning. You lose literally everything.
New weapon idea: kusarigama. The weight deals blunt damage and can KO while the sickle does cutting damage. The weight is unaffected by sharpness and is only affected by raw/element and its own set of MVs. The weapon has a unique built in speed sharpening animation where you grab the weight and use it like a whetstone to sharpen your sickle. It also applies some kind of buff to your sickle.

GS is all about big dick damage but requires you do have great timing to actually do damage with it.
if you want a big weapon with more mobility and is surprisingly agile try the hammer, you can even knock monsters out for several seconds if you can manage to get enough hits to their head which is also where you do the most damage.
so Hammers difficulty comes from properly getting your KO damage in but you still do good enough if you just stay on the monster getting headshots in when you can, GS can really be all or nothing in comparison.
How do I make tempered monsters appear in the GL? I'm MR 51 and I've only ever found a tempered Pukei-Pukei the first time I went there and never again.

Running a long shell type weapon. I was told the charged shelling combo was the best combo to use, but it seems to do shit all for damage compared to rising slash -> overhead smash -> burst fire -> wyrmstake cannon.
Depends on your playstyle. I like to be aggressive so Acidic Glavenus is literally perfect.

Velkhana's is pretty good. If you mean the health recovery song, no that is definitely not necessary. You generally want a horn that at least has AuL(XL), although sometimes horns with the all wind negate and earplugs L horn notes can be good.
World and IB was unlike any of their previous games. It's a huge jump from PS2 graphics. If you actually think they can still sustain the yearly releases after World, you're deluded as fuck. GU was already 80% assets from previous games already

Fishing for TCS is what makes great sword fun, user, its not a tryhard thing, you do it because it feels great to pull off. 90% of my gameplay has been with the gunlance and the heavy bowgun, but since I've been going back and helping friends with early quests recently I decided to try the great sword, and it's amazing. I'm shit so I miss my TCS as often as not, but there is simply no other attack in the game that is half as satisfying to hit with.

You literally do, that's the point of it. I'll probably get some people disagreeing with this, but I'd say the great sword is the hardest of all the weapons to do well with. You really need a lot of monster knowledge to get your true charge slashes in and not simply get smacked around, whereas other weapons have a lot more leeway for adjusting their attacks and for cancelling out to evade. That's not to say you shouldn't play it, it's a lot of fun, but expect to have to pay more attention and try harder than people with other weapons. I had already completed the game when I started using it, and I still struggled a little. Situations I had just brute forced or evaded away from in the past had to be learned properly when I came at them with a great sword.

MR armor doesn't give you that much more defense percentage wise, if you got hit and carted before you're going to get hit and cart again. And that's before taking ecliptic meteors into account.

start with learning how to not die to it. shutting down cyclone with flash bombs helped a lot before, but idk how viable that strat is now in the wake of the flash nerf
after causing several quests to fail I hung up my DBs in favor of using upgraded HR urugaan amor and lance for the fight. it helped a lot
when it comes to avoiding death by ecliptic meteor, hiding behind comet rocks is more reliable than jumping is. keep jump on the quick select wheel anyway in case there aren't any rocks or you can't get to them in time. watch for your character to flinch then execute the jump after a slight pause. how slight? I don't really know. my jump success rate is like 50%. it seems to be around a second
Insect Glaive chads rise up. Shit hits like a fucking air strike in Iceborne, the number jump was huge for IG. Not to mention the Dragoon Dive doing stupid damage and auto-marking, the elemental buffs, the Airborne Deco buff, the Insect Charges, the aerial clutch claw, all of this shit adds up into the greatest buff ever for this shit.
Also, you get to ignore cancer mechanics by jumping over them, and by jumping into constant flying monsters. Aerial damage isn't a joke anymore with stuff like the airborne deco buff and elemental acceleration in play. It's never been a better time to be a Glaiveshitter, but expect longsword to be hanging out in all of your preferred grounded hitzones. That shits annoying, I only gey flinched by LS and DB. Fuck you guys, everyone else has learned to not hit each other.
What monsters do you hate fighting? I always have to use at least 30 max potions on this fucker because I can't dodge him for the life of me.
So I just tried the crit draw build by using 4 piece Velkhana armor and it kind of sucks, mostly because I had to trade out handicraft and focus from my previous build to crit draw and quick sheathe.
I guess you do better and faster draw attack, but it's just not as satisfying as using TCS and seeing those big crit numbers pop up. It also eats up sharpness pretty quick since you're spamming draw attacks over an over again in quick succession.

So you can put guard up into that level 2 slot for fights where its useful, and you can use the three level 1 slots for stuff like poison/sleep/blast/blight resistance or divine blessing or recovery speed, or that third vitality jewel + 2 other things. Whatever, it's meant to be flexible.
A single player set can be more flexible since no need for flinch free. Give me a min on that one.

Hopefully by the next game, instead of recruiting random small monsters as your tailrider/mount, we can get a new monster as our dedicated mount in the next game, which doubles as an AI hunting partner, just like the Palico, so we can customize it's looks and equipment as well.
Higher level guard helps, since you can start stabbing sooner after a block. Also, Wide/Long gunlances are better for agile monsters, wide especially.

Leveling up guard isn't about being able to block, it's about reducing block reaction. Other than that, you just have to be able to read the monster. Also, if you are using long, Focus helps a lot. I actually think without it you lose DPS by using charged shells vs uncharged ones.

Ironically long 6 can be used as a better wide because there is no wide 6 yet.

A lot of these skills are just byproducts of the armor I threw together to get Focus, Artillery, Evade Extender, and Capacity Boost. I have shit all for decos which is super annoying.

Oh, and weapon is Crimson Ember. 541 attack, 20% affinity, 270 paralyze, level 4 long shelling, white affinity.
Mud fish has a super easy to make W5 weapon, I'd use that along with something like Uragaan's set that has innate guard.
The Crit draw frostcraft GS builds apparently actually have pretty good performance from what I hear. Even with elemental he's, no less

Rajang is the first DLC monster as you know. Furious Rajang is also included, and he works like Scarred Garuga in that he acts as Tempered Rajang as well as his own monster. You get an assignment to hunt Rajang in the Guiding Lands after you get a region to level 4 for the first time, and after that he’ll appear randomly across all maps.
The second DLC monster is Chameleos. He’s unlocked the same way as Rajang but at level 5. Beat the assignment and he’ll appear randomly across Ancient Forest, Coral Highlands and Rotten Vale as well as the Guiding Lands.
Third is Gore Magala and Shagaru Magala. You hunt Gore in an assignment in the Ancient Forest, then Shagaru in one at Elder’s Recess. After that they can appear on any map and in the Guiding Lands. You unlock the assignment for Gore in MR4 and the one for Shagaru in MR5. They both get normal Tempered versions, no Chaotic Gore is planned.
Valstrax is number four. He appears under the same conditions as Chameleos, and after you beat him he will appear randomly in the Guiding Lands and the areas that Chameleos doesn’t inhabit (ie Wildspire Waste, Elder’s Recess and Hoarfrost Reach). He’s got an ordinary Tempered version.
Fifth is Alatreon. Unlike the rest he isn’t tied to the Guiding Lands, he attacks Seliana and you have to repel him, then you repel him again from Elder’s Recess before finishing him off for good in Xeno’jiiva’s arena. He controls all elements now and isn’t limited in which he uses based on whether he’s flying or not, he can use them all at any time. No Tempered version at all.
The final DLC monster is Voidscale Xeno’jiiva, a pitch black Xeno variant. He is also not tied to the Guiding Lands, you fight him in Shara’s arena and the prerequisite is MR100. No Tempered version like Alatreon, either. He’s intended to be the final new content added to the game.

Nah that’s just Rathalos and Rathian’s backup call. I don’t know why, but they made them calling each other sound absolutely horrifying. Try fighting Legiana and Shrieking Legiana when they’re on the map st the same time, they can call for help from one another too and their call is many times more horrifying than Rathalos and Rathian.
If you grab the vaal set bonus and a horn with recovery speed up and recovery extender, you have bonkers health Regen (especially if you take the piece that has rec level or rec speed on it). You can basically recover from hits before you c actually stand back up. A VC word of warning though - any damage over time effect will negate all of your Regen (fire, poison, bleed, environmental damage)
Acid Glav. Lance both wounds on claw attacks and is so precise that you can have master's touch on the sliver of purple.

There is more damage reduction, armor just gives you more HP. The HP bar is just a percentage. Your real HP is ((80+def)/80)*100. Going from 500 to 1000 would give you just less than double the amount of hits you can take.
Its 3 melee attacks are the rehashed from Nergi.
Quick Sheathe is handy on very slow sheathing weapons like HBG and Gunlance, but not a dealbreaker. Quick Sheathe is best on crit-draw abuse GS, but people probably still only have it because it's native on the armor that gives you Frostcraft for those 30% boosted draw attacks.
It's useful for weapons with slow seething times in very niche situations like either of the two lances, SA, or HBG

I'm still convinced they're going to add some enraged variants that take a bunch of weapons to a rank 11 or 12 version with tickets, or some guiding lands gimmick. Some of the weapons that don't have a unique graphic don't make sense, like the most iconic weapon graphics from some monsters looking different. Like the Brachy Hunting Horn, or the Glavenus Greatsword.
Even with the in game music on, it goes silent a few seconds before the roar occurs anyway. They REALLY wanted to spook players with it.

First of all augment your armour and get some defence rather than immediately carting all the time and ending everyone's runs for no reason. Fully augmented armor and health boost 3 will put you out of range of being one shotted by any physical attacks, and you probably want 20 fire and thunder resist too to avoid blights one shots from those.
Use a flash pod or run somewhere out of the way when he does his tornado spell on you. Hide behind a comet when he uses ecliptic meteor. Other than that you can treat him like any other monster, learn to avoid his moves and kill him.
You mentioned the "MP balance"
Why would that matter in multiplayer? All monsters are "MP balanced" in multiplayer.

Ebony did that for me before the update. Sometimes odog acts like that because he's looking for food so he can go into hyper mode. I don't know why ebony seemed spooked by me though.
The full burst combo you describe (minus the stake) is used for normal type gunlance, where you loop upswing, Slam, burst, quick reload, repeat. For all gunlance don't forget to do the new attack where you load Slinger ammo for the special sticky mine. Once you plant that, start doing charged shells into it. Long gunlance gets a huge bonus to charge shelling (and your sticky mine explosion power is based on the type of shell that hits it, so the sticky will do a huge portion of your damage) while normals have far more shells per clip (which is why they do the full burst) also I missed capacity boost in my recommendation, you want that too. Be aware that longer sharpness trumps higher sharpness for long, shelling damage stays constant until you hit like green iirc, and long style basically doesn't poke. As far as guard goes, I believe you can grab a piece or two with it as I think 3 points is the recommended amount
Also make damn sure you are building a long 6 gunlance as that's basically the backbone of long damage. Lower shelling level will cripple you

Hunters have a few loose screws if the admiral and the handler didn't tip you off. Fuck, nergigante and gore are already smarter than a huge chunk of them by just killstealing or faking death successfully.

I mean I get that charged shells are SUPPOSED to do more damage, but from what I've tested in the training grounds they don't, even with the sticky mine bursts. I'm using a level four long right now as I'm only at the point where you chase Velkhana out of the Elder's Recess, so the highest I can make right now is level 5.

I've just been assuming they're all invincible, and they know it. The worst a monster can do to them is make them pass out for a while. It explains a lot.
spread LBG already exists
I like the Velk and Narga LBGs for RF pierce/spread/N2. Shrieking Legiana/Narga HBG are also good pierce for HBG, but everyone just uses Zinogre for HBG. The most popular LBGs are Garuga and Jho for RF sticky. Narga armor set bonus is pretty good for any LBG because it has pierce up and set bonus gives spare shot as well.
