A franchise is like Zelda or Final Fantasy. A series is like the Final Fantasy VII games and its spinoffs, or Zelda BotW and its upcoming sequel.

Franchise -> Sprawling and non-linear, you can usually start with whatever game and work your way into the series from there. Games don't have to be connected at all beyond a few central ideas that tie them together.
