Other general tips:
-Try to ignore any house not listed beforehand. Many of them do have great commanders, but are too difficult or time consuming to be worth it on a first playthrough
-Always declare war preemptively if possible. The game will try and force you into war through
scripted events and every target the game wants you to fight is an unrewarding waste of time
(Tenshi, Iga, Asai-Asakura)
Premptively declaring war as soon as you've finished war with another house will cancel out these scripted events, allowing you to choose your own targets
-The Light Attack samurai skill is great for capturing units, Kuge Kyouko, who you can recruit in
Kyo, comes with it by default
-Don't worry about points until NG+
-keep an eye on the gourds you've broken. All houses except Hara, Tokugawa, Imagawa, One Eye, Tanegashima and Takuga (and techinically Shimazu) have gourds, and conquering a house with a gourd causes that gourd to break (and a house being conquered by another house will also cause breakage). Breaking 5 gourds triggers a crucial plot sequence which will drastically change the game, finish up unfinished business before then

I haven't played 4 and 4.1/4.2 so I can't speak on them
5D is literal RNG dice shit that most people hate but there's a subset of people who like the game
VI is a dungeon crawler RPG, very long but more story dense and characters are more fleshed out than Sengoku
Quest is Dragon Quest inspired RPG, lots of characters and ground covered in the world.
IX is top down SRPG, closest thing I can think to compare it to is Fire Emblem but it's not quite the same
X is another party RPG but with some inspiration from mobage in terms of acquiring party members and having multiple versions of party members that get different skills. Each run is different because your available units might be completely different at certain stages

Make All Troops Elite is good, but not yet. It increases Rance's stats by 2. Once you have his stats high enough that level 1 books don't work on him anymore, take this, but it's a waste right now.
Cure Injury is okay, I'm pretty sure it just increases Katsuie's stats. He's a decent foot soldier and there aren't a lot of foot soldiers around.
Kabuki Actor: this literally doesn't do anything except unlock a second SAT bonus called Too Much Kabuki. This makes Maeda a decent character, but 2 SAT bonuses to get one goodish character is a steep price. If he wasn't a foot soldier this would be a hard no, but there really aren't a lot of foot soldiers that are good. Maybe.
Mannequin Cat: weird item, I don't really think it's worth it.
Multi-talented: both of these are pretty alright, you get good utility guys out of them.
Rest are pretty self-explanatory. You'll want to send for foreign reinforcements when that becomes available.

As is my Rance lore comes from Sengoku Rance, Rance 1 and 02

Like I said I've only finished the first playthrough of Sengoku, and stopped before playing more to try to play the older games to get the know on the past lore that seems to be pretty extensive with recurring characters (personally was pretty cool seeing that Miku from Sengoku was already a thing from as early as Rance 1)

So basically, if I play Kichikuou won't I run into the same problem I had with Sengoku of seeing too many references to a past I have no idea about?

That being said with Rance 1 and 02's gameplay I'll be more inclined to straight up reading the plot and walkthroughs of the game than actually playing them...

Kichikuou is worse because it's set in the areas that the old games were. It's full of returning characters, whereas Sengoku is primarily new characters.

Seeing all this Rance games finally get localized is like a dream come true. This might one be one of the few times I purchased a game after pirating the fan translation years ago. If paying $40 for every Rance game even if its digital only, gives me every game in the series then so be it.

Kichikuou is a hard reset for the canon and some of the later games (IX and X in particular) use concepts from KR that are altered in some way that you'll appreciate more if you've played from KR

But yeah at least for the characters in Leazas and Free Cities areas you'll be more lost compared to Sengoku. There's a digest version of 1, 2 and 3 somewhere that you can just read that summarized the important plot/character shit

Yeah, KR makes lots of references to III and IV, III especially. KR is very disconnected from the rest of the series though.

This is true, literally no one should skip III, its one of the best games of the series.

5D was still fun tho, unlike IV which dragged a bit and was pretty much a side quest.

All the games will come out whether you buy them or not, the work is already largely done. Don't feel pressured if money is a problem for you.

Don't even bother with "playing" I and 02, they're literal shit, especially as the English versions are machine translated. There is a digest version of I and II though that has a decent translation and just plays through the plot of the first 2 games.
