Stopped after about 30 tries the first day I got to him. Stopped to cool down. The next day I tried, it took me only a couple to get it. So I'd say 40 max.

There's a conditioning effect you didn't get to experience. None of the fights in the game except Undyne the Undying are anywhere near Sans' fight's level of difficulty. So you've been doing genocide for an hour and a half, maybe a bit more and maybe with breaks. Then you get to Sans and he is COMPLETELY unlike anything else in the game. It's very effective.
