Part of me kind of gets it. I guess somebody could not like it for the same reason you wouldn’t like Final Fantasy XII, but then, by the end of the third chapter there’s enough combat mechanics to keep you engaged in the “auto attack” combat so when people complain about the combat being boring or slow I often wonder if they just weren’t playing it right.

FFXII eventually lets you have more control over how your party plays by letting you choose specific skills and roles, of which there are a lot. The problem was that by the end you get so many skill points that everything is unlocked on every single character and the game suffers from becoming too much like XBC2. So they fixed it with the zodiac edition because that is a PROBLEM.
In XBC2, combat doesn't change from start to finish no matter what you do. Every blade plays more or less the same and the player has very little control over how your party functions, there's no aspect of "hey maybe I'll set up this character to do X at the cost of Y" that gives RPG games the satisfaction of party building.

I'd give Rex either Agate, or Wulfric. Zenobia is cool, but I use Roc on him, and Zenobia on Zeke sometimes. Tora's setup is fine, except I tend to use Light for QTpi. As for Morag, Brighid, Poppi Buster, and Corvin are what I use for her. Zeke gets Pandy, Kosmos, and T-Elos.

So the challenge mode thing worries me slightly. Do you just need to use a different strategy for challenge mode? I set this party up to have good elemental coverage so that I can put a lot of different orbs on enemies for chain attacks. Also with avant garde medals would it be okay to just switch the other two poppis to attacker as well?

Xenoblade 2 has my favorite JRPGs combat system, is a lot of fun once you get all the systems unlocked, it has an insane amount of customization options and in the late and post game it's super dynamic and fast. It's a pity that you missed it user, I had such a great experience with it.

Challenge Mode is designed to make use of the DLC with specific mechanics designed to make Shulk and Corvin in particular highly useful. Pic related is the setup I go through it with but I have crit spam/healing on all members with Nia as a safety net when the nukes hit.

How does the combat even work in this game? Even with chain attacks and cancels and all that special stuff it takes days to kill an enemy. The tips say you should use a chain attack to stop an enemy from raging, but mine barely do any damage ever. I turned the difficulty to easy and the game was still too hard when I got to the robot place so I dropped it.

How long is it supposed to take to kill an enemy at the same level? It might be that I was underleveled, but it even chain attacks would only take 30% health off mobs near when I quit.

The game is basically about exponential momentum. The more you rack up combos and things, the more damage you'll do, so while the first few seconds will take a bit to get going you should be dabbing on bitches by the time your battle arts have recharged after their first use, since blade affinity should be at max or close to maxing out and therefore your special attacks should be ramping up faster(even moreso once Rex has Mythra in play).
Also don't forget to enhance your driver arts. Doesn't matter how strong your blade is or how much you've enhanced them with weapon chips if your battle arts are still at level one.
Anyway do combos to produce elemental orbs, then use combo attacks to shatter those orbs to produce seals.

Chain attacks are supposed to be done when orbs are in place. Breaking orbs boosts the damage multiplier and extends the round.

Here's the problem: you've essentially listed the flaws that you think are the only ones allowed to be discussed. If I was to list other flaws, like the horrific quick time events mid-combat that make the game trivial and cinematic, or if I was to list the thousands of cutscenes that exist as nothing but filler, or the gacha mechanics that add to unnecessary grinding, then you'd say those don't count, usually making the excuse that "you just don't get it" or something.

The problem is that there's not enough interactivity for every cutscene I'm seeing. Again look at the Mario and Luigi vid I linked. Every special attack requires like 50 button presses, and the animations last maybe a few seconds, max. Xenoblade's special cinematic attack barely even requires button inputs over a 15 second duration.

Let me put it this way, so you can see my viewpoint: when I play a video game, anytime I'm not pressing buttons or interacting is wasted time. Basically the game is forcing me to sit down and watch a cutscene, and that's the antithesis of gameplay. Now multiply that by 500 hours, and it dwarfs any gameplay you might ever see. It's what turned me off from the series.
I won't defend the guy who calls people nincels or uses shitposting terms, or even the guy who spams "japanese humor.webm". I will, however, point out that it is not a crime to hate these scenes, and it is unfair for you to call people shitposters for being turned off from the game as a result.

Look at one of my earlier posts, the one that showcases the QTEs mid-combat. I didn't post that to make anyone mad. I posted it for the sake of helping my point by showing something that I didn't like in the game, and arguing how I would improve it. It's also why, if I ever talk about the mythra dancing scene, I post a link to youtube instead of posting the webm. The webm is tainted by a shitposter, so to articulate my point I have to go more indepth and jump through hoops to prove that my argument is in good faith. It sucks, but it's a necessity so people don't call me a snoy tranny or acfag or whatever other buzzword. I just want a good, clean discussion free of shitposting.

Gears is the original game that’s infamous for the slideshow second disc due to running out of budget. It was originally intended to be part of a broader canon of games and media called “Perfect Works” but that obviously didn’t happen.
Saga is a trilogy that’s essentially built from history from Gears’ lorebook but with the serial numbers filed off and a couple events changed for copyright reasons since Takahashi left Squaresoft but Gears’ IP was still stuck there. Wound up being cut short at the third installment of 6 planned due to commercial underperformance.
Xenoblade 1 was originally a completely unrelated game called Monado: Beginning of the World but was retooled to carry thematic influences from past games after Nintendo suggested putting the Xeno name on it for branding purposes.
Xenoblade X is a retooled online-centric project by Monolith Soft that started to get more blatant about borrowing themes and imagery from past Xeno games
Xenoblade 2 is a concurrent sequel to Xenoblade 1 and essentially is a soft-relaunch of the broader narrative that Takahashi wanted to tell with Xenogears.

It's not that combat is slow in XC2, it's that the ramp up is slow and the enemies aren't well balanced for it. You use auto attacks to charge up driver arts, you use driver arts to charge up blade specials, you use blade specials in the right order to fill the team attack meter, then you do a team attack to shatter the elemental orbs on the target. The end result is that you ramp up from hitting for 100 with auto attacks to hitting for over 1M with a team attack. Against weak enemies you never get a chance to get past the driver art phase once you get a good set of arts that lets you break, topple, launch, and smash. Against bosses you basically play the "diddle the boss for 5% of his health bar until you team attack him for the remaining 95%" game. It works. It feels good when you get big team attacks and shatter orbs. It just keeps very rigid and it feels like you aren't doing much most of the time.
The closest thing I would compare it to would be Baten Kaitos. Until you get good at weaving together card combos you hit like a wet noodle and random encounters take 2+ minutes.

It's currently my least favorite Xenoblade game, but I still had a lot of fun with it. The core gameplay is good, but I don't like Blades being locked behind random PokéBalls, and I wish some of them weren't so tedious to level up/get new skills. It's also VERY weeb. Like 1 and X were anime as fuck, which can be a good thing, but 2 has gone full harem anime, and it ranges from kinda funny to cringeworthy. Still good in spite of that, though, I'd check it out if you're in the mood for a JRPG.
I think I also like the core gameplay in Torna more, but I haven't beaten it yet. It all seems a lot more involved, instead of your blades just standing around until special attacks they do attacks of their own and support you, plus you can switch between them and control them yourself mid battle. It makes me wonder why they didn't just do this to begin with.
Also, Nia is best girl and deserves better than Rex "Gee How Come The Plot Lets You Have Two Waifus" Driver.
