I like all the things you listed as a negative. Costa Del Sol is really fun if you switch out your party members and see what they do in their spare time. Hojo at the beach is also a great moment in the game. Mt. Corel is one of the most memorable locations in the entire game, and Cosmo Canyon is great for the same reason as Costa Del Sol.

Only a few locations have nothing of importance happening, like Costa Del Sol, but it still has character interaction and progression for people without ADHD to discover. You get to see what Shinra has done to the world in virtually every location you visit. There's worldbuilding at all times. Just because you don't get plot twist after plot twist or revelation after revelation doesn't mean nothing's happening.

Basic steps are:
1- Grind your enemy skiller untill above 700hp
2- Equip that character with a elemental materia junctioned to a fire materia on your armor for that sweet fire protection.
3- Start battle with Zolom and keep your enemy skiller always above 650hp
4- When Zolom "stands up" don't attack it with your enemy skiller otherwise Zolom might remove him/her from the battle.
5- Zolom will use beta when around 1/4hp left for about 600 damage to your enemy skiller if you used the elemental materia, allowing him/her to survive.
6- Don't bother healing, just Beta the Zolom back for over 1000 damage and victory for you.

Sephiroth doesn't physically exit the North Crater in the game at all. He mind controls headless Jenova and has it shapeshift into himself and uses that as vessel to lure the "clones" to follow his path.

Except all of Barret's character development happens in Corel and the Gold Saucer. All of Cid's character development happens in Rocket Town. All of Yuffie's character development happens in Wutai. All of Red XIII's character development happens in Cosmo Canyon. Tifa and Cloud have their character development happen through flashbacks, visits to Nibelheim and during the Lifestream section. The only character with the only meaningful character progression happening in Midgar is Aeris. She becomes irrelevant until she leaves the party after the Temple of the Ancients.

The actual fight against Shinra happens throughout the game, and accumulative, the least happens in Midgar. It is just the introduction to the game's world and plot.

You're talking out of your ass if you think Midgar is the one and only location for story and character progression. Replay the game.

I replayed the game like two months ago and more happens in two hours in midgar than what happens in 12 hours after midgar.
All the instances of character development you've been talking about are essentially about a dozen lines of dialogue occasionally padded with 30 minutes of random encounters. They're all set up in a very contrived way where they spend 5 minutes on the character's development and backstory before wrapping it up and never developing them any further until 8 hours later when everyone reunites on the highwind and says one or two lines about why they're going to fight the good fight.

They will fuck up the gondola ride, maybe even make Aeris the only option.

Yuffie is the strongest character in the game assuming you're too lazy to grind. The Conformer's scaling gives her ridiculous damage at low levels and you don't even need special materia setups. Red is pretty decent early on, Cait has the strongest limit break in the game, and Vincent has the mug glitch and death penalty overflow.

Auron existing on the same planet as Sephiroth would not be a hard sell.

My final party when I replayed recently was Yuffie and Red XIII, I like the classic knight/rogue/mage and XIII seemed like the closest thing to a magic user aesthetically. Without even trying i beat Sephiroth before he even had a chance to use supernova, Yuffie was way too busted with 4x cut

Red XIII with the Seraph comb was meta through the middle part of the game, his physical attacks are extremely strong until the other party members get their better weapons. Then disc 2 hits, Cloud gets a decent sword, and Red becomes a dedicated party buffer.

I mean, Cid is kind of an asshole to everyone when you first meet him.

You can play the minigame like what, 15 times in the game? From the very first time visiting the place and after that everytime you progress the story until the final go that gives you the Phoenix summon. The final battle is the only one mandatory. Other battles before that gives you semi decent rewards

One good thin about the FC minigame is you can just use the speedstrat to get through it in like a minute if you want to.

The WEAPONs awakening, and Sapphire Weapon getting it's face blown off (I bet they change this to give us more super boss content). Most of all I can't wait to hear the new WEAPON raid theme, shit always reminded me of the Destroy all Monsters theme.

Angermax/Ungarmax and Highwind hit enemies 18 times for 9,999 damage. Omnislash hits enemies 15 times with 100% crit. The rest are temporarily useful, except for Cat Shit who sucks and Tifa who has RNG.
