If their game takes up a massive amount of space, you're less inclined to want to uninstall it for the next time you want to play. Games today are all full of daily challenges and other games-as-a-service garbage to hook you in and keep you playing every day. More daily users keeping the game alive means the whales are more likely to invest into the game.

The real answer is two things:
Firstly, there are brainlets that think bigger filesize means bigger games. They're rare, but why cut out that market unnecessarily? There's also a lot more people that consciously know that's wrong but still sort of feel it.
Secondly, the less games there are on a casual person who mostly play's AAA shit's limited console harddrive, the more likely they are to not buy anything else and just keep playing FIFA/GTA V/Call of Duty/Destiny.

A single object with a texture resolution high enough to tell exactly what it is in nice detail will run anywhere up to 200mb, depending on a few things. Usually around 20mb. A hero character model and textures can be gigabytes depending on how autistic the devs are about every crease and fold of their clothing. Thousands of objects, compiled shaders (this being the pretty shit everyone loses their minds over) and baked global illumination (prevents massive framerate drops to dynamic shadows on everything for the benefit of consoles) all add up. Textures can be compressed pretty far though, audio can't below a certain threshold. Massive bloat in some games due to non-compressed audio is retarded but probably isn't malicious.
