One of the conversations in the monastery with Dorothea is it gets weird when it's with those who you know. Hell, Linhardt's first kill proves that some of them don't actually enjoy the fighting but they keep doing it because they have to for the church or whatever timeskip reasons.

3H is the least fire emblem game in the series. It's more akin to persona with the "school exploring" bullshit you have to go through each month. I feel like the majority of the game you're just stuck doing shit around the monastery instead of actually playing tactical maps, what fire emblem was originally about. It's lost a lot of what made it fire emblem and replaced it with waifu bullshit.

I like the monastery dialogue when you're discussing the battle that just happened with your students but when it's midbattle and they do a closeup of the dead unit with the sad music playing despite having no interaction with them whatsoever in part one I roll my eyes a bit

Honestly it's just too slow, I didn't buy fire emblem to play persona for hours between battles.

They do actually know each other to some extent. Even if they don't usually interact there are a few pairings the game pushes by the questioning box like Raphael and Dimitri, you can be in BE and still tell him to become training buddies with Dimitri, and for one random month pre timeskip Sylvain and Hilda are right next to each other

As far as FE goes, yes, it's great. As a game on its own the flaws are more noticeable but it's still a good game

No. It's a bit too much of a mess to say that, it's genuinely unpolished and honestly incomplete in a lot of instances (are we just...going to ignore there are no legendary gauntlets?). However, its still really fun and for Koei-Tecmo's debut effort with the series (Warriors doesn't exist...), it honestly does knock several of Intelligent System's own efforts out of the park. If they actually decided to work together instead of dumping all the hard work onto KT, we might actually have a very fun and very polished FE on our hands.

People that say the GBA titles BTFO it are really dumb, though. It's almost like if you strip EVERYTHING COMPLICATED OUT and only leave the bare minimum, you can get away with being called "fast" and "effective" and not "braindead simple". Combining the speed and polish of the GBA titles with the unique and fun unit customization mechanics (or any instance of actual depth) of the later games should be the priority of their next title. Put the focus on one protagonist with the MAYBE addition of multiple routes with them, and it should be fine to go ham with them. Fire Emblem is at its best when its not overburdening itself with trying to do everything, just doing what it does well, so I would recommend doing that if we are to get the "best" FE.

Lion's route is the most anime of all the routes which inherently makes it the worst.

Writing of the characters is whole another thing. We are discussing the writing of story/ies here. As far as that goes it's as bad as your usual FE plot. In fact, I dare to say that story quality in 3H is on pair of Fates, if not even more laughable than Fates' writing was. Between Garon and "those who slither in the dark" bs, Garon looks like 100/10 villain in comparison. Enough said.
The reason why Lion route manages to escape completely dogshit story is because it focuses on developing Dimitri as a character, and it doesn't give "those who job in the dark" (which is the weakest part about said 3H's story) any sort of spotlight.
In short: Lion route manages to be "better" story-wise because it discards everything that is trash about said story in other routes and just has you follow Dimitri on his journey and watch him develop.
Also, characters actually comment on events of the story instead of sucking avatars dick 24/7. Which was another plus for Lion route. Lions aren't by any means perfect or excellent type of story that has never been seen/done before, but it's pretty decent compared to what 3/4 have to offer when it comes to said story because shit villains don't have any sort of spotlight there.

It plays like shit. Conquest and even Birthright are better than it but it’s got a leg up on Awakening, SoV, and Revelations I guess.

The Dark Bishop mastery skill is cool but the class looks fucking retarded on anyone but Hubert who just gets his default timeskip outfit and Dark Knight is objectively the superior class. Class is also gender-locked for no good reason. female magic units get fucking Gremory and males are stuck with an inferior class you can only promote into if you bother to kill Death Knight and if you go the Crimson Flower route you only get two chances to get dark seals.

Pretty much, make several saves around chapter 12 if you don't want to bother playing through those chapters 3 more times to do the other routes. Also the Golden Deer route is the best one and I say that as a Black Eaglesfag.

The characters sexuality is determined by who can romance both versions of Byleth. This is because IS is so lazy they just copy paste the scenes between genders, so there is no effort whatsoever.

So, for instance, Mercie is bi but Annie is not. GD is the only house with no bisexual characters much to the chagrin of the enlightened people who want to see more LBGT options in video games.

Characters in 3H can be honestly seen as bi, just not for you. For an example:

I can't think of a single game that I played recently where I was so bored playing but so invested on learning more about the characters and story.
