Fire is historically the default "element" in human history.
If you wanted to easily destroy enemy towns, camps, or fields, you would set fire to then. Fire arrows and flammable catapult ammo was uncommon but seen sometimes in war. In more recent times we see molotov cocktails, and napalm on vietcongs. Fire also keeps away insects, and animals are scared of it.
Fire would technically be first one we've gotten some sort of control over and use out of, as cavemen learned how to make fires.
