I have no clue what this is but I physically recoiled once I opened the thumbnail. From a basic costume standpoint that is a category five disaster.

The shorts are the only thing that bothers me.

Imagine being a sprite artist and your boss asks you to make a 16x32 sprites based on this.

I don't think the design is really that bad. They had a theme and stuck with it, and even made use of the dangly helmet by having grandpa pikachu sit in it.
His problem is that he's nothing. He's just another meek but kindhearted anime protag with NOTHING else. Everyone else in the game seemed to have some quirk about them that made me like them a little, but this fucker was just devoid of anything.
Playing it made me mad, when I was a little kid I wrote tons of cringy fanfiction with characters just like him before realising how garbage it was. Give 12 year old me a role as a lead character designer. Fuck.

Better than most JRPG character designs when you consider that everything on that armor actually has a practical purpose and the armor has utility that's both used in gameplay and in the story.
