Probably just to have something to do. I imagine it's hard to go from being in executive positions for a good portion of your life to just having nothing to do. He probably thought sitting back catching up on his shows and going golfing whenever he want sounded super great until a month or two in when he found himself ungodly bored with it already. There's likely a reason why when some big high earning type retires from his job the story rarely ends with "and then he golfed and drank sangria until he died in [year]"

Most people who retire don't want to fully quit working. They just don't want the constant all encompassing responsibility they had because they want more free time.
President of NoA would keep him busy 24/7 but he can't exactly just demote to random dude at Nintendo. So retiring is basically the only option. Then he can dick around with other things here and there as an advisory role.
Most professions have people do that like engineering, law, medicine, etc.
