Not really. Early Yea Forums (04-07 or so) wasn't really contrarian at all, it was just people who liked shit eventually that happened to be niche.
Liking niche things is not contrarianism, but hating popular things purely because they're popular is. It was after the first really big wave of new users caused by the embarrassing chantology that really caused contrarianism to be the norm here.

That isn't true, I bet you didn't start browsing until 2008 or 2011, which were the worst transformative years of Yea Forums. Yea Forums was incredibly creative and, if you 'belonged,' there was an incredible sense of community based on fucking things up for other, worse communities. Then we turned our autistic rage on the normalfags who had started polluting the boards, and it was never the same. Yet I still can't stop fucking posting.

I came here around 2016 and even I feel like this is really true. I always felt like every community that starts on Yea Forums consists of people disinterested with the mainstream but slowly get diluted by people rejected by the mainstream and they're bitter because of it.
