At the end of the day Death Stranding tackles familiar concepts we've seen in other games but it has a unique presentation plus MGSV gameplay and survival elements. There's nothing complex there but he wants it to be.

I watched the making-of documentary for the first game and they open admitted that they had come up with way more game mechanics that were fun but took them out to focus on the bland gameplay so the attention wouldn't be taken away from the story. I thought the first one was entertaining enough for one playthrough, but I doubt anyone will care about it 20 years from now. If Ocarina of Time or FFVII didn't take every opportunity to get away from the main gameplay and spice it up with fun stuff like fishing or snowboarding do you think they would still be as talked about today?
