Does anyone here do any VR gaming? I've just got a nice job so was thinking of buying a Valve Index, but really what I'm here to ask is, is VR worth getting in these early days, or are the screens still too low resolution/quality etc and the games still lacking?
If you're actually interested then get the oculus rift s because the quality difference is minimal and does not cost as much as a fucking car so you won't be trying to find every excuse to pretend to like it
Angel Williams
VR is a meme gimmick fad that is already over. We 4k gaming instead.
Nolan Carter
Resolution is a bad argument against VR because you you can't stand inside of your 4k monitor lol
Thomas Howard
I'd recommend you wait to see Valve's VR game to see the current reasonable "potential" of VR games before falling for the meme.
Blake Wright
*makes my sims stand up inside of my 4k monitor because my sims was sitting on a chair with a push of a button*
I do most gaming almost exclusively in VR. I wouldn’t describe it as a must have for everyone, do some demos and come to your own conclusion.
I will say that shelling out 1k for an index is probably a bad idea since it’s a shitty headset for the price.
Juan Turner
Depends on what you play. If you play flight or racing sims, or even something like elite, its absolutelly unbeatable even right now. I just got an index and it's been the single most addition to elevate gaming I've witnessed. The feeling of actually having to rack a bolt on a bolt action in fps games, or even just blind firing is insane
Ryan Diaz
Why? There are plenty of good vr games out or coming out that show potential perfectly well. Stormland, Boneworks, Blade and Sorcery, etc. Valve couldn’t even get thumbsticks working in vr. If they’re actually working on a game (they aren’t btw) it’s gonna be shit.
Cooper Jackson
The index is the best headset currently on the market. I dont know what you're smoking. Most comfortable, good screens, fantastic audio, best controllers yet. Yea it's expensive, but you get shat you pay for
Oliver Powell
Lol when fp is bp
Jayden Brown
>reflective frunk fucks with tracking >shitty thumbsticks That’ll be 1000 dollars please!
Josiah King
The effect of being inside a virtual environment is great, but there is a serious lack of good games and being inside VR for long periods of time is very tiring. I doubt you would ever actually want to play a 15-20 hour AAA game in VR even if it's Half Life 3 VR or whatever.
Easton Bailey
You realize you don't have to play a game from start to finish in one sitting right? Like, you can actually take a break whenever you want, you know
Jackson Martinez
Would Half Life 2 have been fun in 1 hour chunks?
Logan Jenkins
It's 100% a gimmick, but fun, but also not worth a fucking 1000+ euro.
Thomas Gray
I'm honestly not sure, I dropped that shit as soon as I stepped off the train because source is incredibly dated traah
Noah Morris
maybe you should have played it 15 years ago zoomer
Adam Williams
Just ordered a Rift S, what games are fun?
Josiah Murphy
No Man's Sky (unironically) Bigscreen Beta lets you use your desktop in various environments like at a huge IMAX theater or by a camp fire or on Mars
Google Earth VR is pretty amazing to fly around and look at shit. It's a surreal feeling to look down on your home town like it's a train model, and then swoop down onto the streets at normal height.
Kingspray Graffiti is a pretty amazing graffiti simulator
Hot dogs, horseshoes and hand grenades is the best gun range/weapon simulator for VR to date, with interactibility the #1 priority for the guns
P.T. VR remake but I can't even play that because I am gwnuinely too terrified when I step into the hallway
Pavlov VR for CSGO/MW2 VR with ported maps from many games
VRChat if you're the social type
Anthony Powell
all those games sound cringe
Ian Sullivan
Then fuck off cunt, I'm sorry for putting a list together for you
Chase Cox
Yikes
Brayden James
its a harsh reality but VR has no games i just hope valve can be competent and make something good
Joshua Hughes
>literally replies to a list of games
Alexander Sullivan
Drone
Aiden Watson
Btfo lmao
Aiden Price
>screens still too low resolution/quality
Screen quality is secondary, controllers and tracking is what's important
Jason Powell
>If you play flight or racing sims, or even something like elite, its absolutelly unbeatable even right now.
That simply isn't true. While it shows the potential, the resolution is far too low to be comfortably playable. For example you cannot play any flight combat sim without enemy being tags on because you will not be able to spot them even at medium distance.
William Young
I'm the user that asked for recomendations, not that guy. I appreciate the list user
This is the second most subjective "issue" right after motion sickness. People have different tolerances and something you consider to not be "comfortably playable" is someone elses best experience of their life
Ethan Miller
This sounds kino af desu
Joshua Morgan
I'm not sure about customization but archangel hellfire might be for you
Jeremiah Reyes
No, this no where near the motion sickness issue. This is like someone saying they play driving games at 15fps and it's "perfectly fine". Or someone posting some morbidly obese slob in /s/ because they think it's beautiful. No, those people are fucking insane. You absolutely unequivocally need high resolution in a flight sim to spot targets, unless you *only* play modern combat jet games were you rely solely on radar.
Jeremiah Ward
Ok, we good then lol
Joshua Clark
This is bait.
Christopher Gray
Low resolution is the same as playing 15fps? Sounds like you just don't like low res lol
Ryder Ramirez
Resolution is not subjective. Current headsets have enough resolution to read cockpit instruments but seeing and identify airplanes or ground targets is just not possible. Flight sim forums are full of people discussing the "5k" headsets because they need more resolution.
FOV is also an issue because checking six is significantly harder in VR than it is in real life. You need to be a contortionist to check six in VR.
Parker Bailey
>he fell for the valve hardware meme
Blake Peterson
>not working on a game A half life vr game is coming out this year. They had a presentation about it
Levi Bailey
I'm a WMRchad who owns both a Lenovo and Rift S. The Rift S has SERIOUS comfortability issues
Jace Wright
Tolerance is subjective, moron. Because you don't like low res doesn't mean some kid is not going to have fun playing it
Blake Taylor
>i actually dont own a vive i own literally everything but a vive xD
Yeah, he fell for the valve hardware meme
Kevin Kelly
It's good shit but there aren't any full length games or interest from big companies to make them.
Isaiah Barnes
Do you want a timestamp, bitch?
Jason Diaz
Being unable to play the game is not subjective. Imagine playing Counter Strike except you can only see 5 meters in front of you while everyone else has normal vision. That's combat flight simming in VR
Owen Long
You're free to buy an expensive PC VR helmet to play porn games, modded games and VRChat. Or you can get a PSVR for a fraction of the cost and have an actual catalogue of games to choose from.
WMR: Shit tracking, small sweetspot Vive: Shit controllers, worse screens than WMR Rift S: Facebook Cosmos: Literally no point when the Rift S is half the price Index: $1000
>Kingspray Graffiti Be cautious of this though unless you're 100% sure cause the game is long since dead >No Updates in over a year >No one ever hosting an online lobby >Lots of bugs still floating around
No one asked about your job you just decided to put it in your post to ask if VR is worth it or not, which it is , you are subtlety attention whoring to boost your own self worth by writing about yourself to strangers , I can’t stand people like you
Cameron Phillips
There aren't that many full games. Skyrim VR is fun, Beat Saber if your wrists can handle it. Lots of AA games and indie if that's your cup of tea. No Mans Sky just released a VR version and it's pretty cool, too bad the game itself is kind of boring.
I play mostly VR myself. Flatscreen games just aren't that immersive or fun.
If Rift S wasn't 80hz and lacking hardware IPD I'd agree.
Andrew Carter
>Thank you >You literally just
Asher Ward
I bought the Oculus Quest on launch and honestly have no regrets, the convenience and freedom is amazing even if the graphics take a hit and the immersion is still extreme. I play it daily still, way more than I play my other consoles, but I also enjoy more arcade-style experiences so your mileage may definitely vary. For me though it's not a gimmick, it's literally gotten me excited about gaming again.
Kayden Phillips
Makes me wonder how easily you can change the battery if it starts to crap out.
Alexander Thompson
It was dated back then, besides the physics.
Jason Walker
Which one is the better choice for a first foray into VR?
Don't you feel bothered by the potentially limited selection of the Quest? You kinda can't play big names out there like No Man's Sky VR.
Jeremiah Bell
Generally speaking If you aren't really sure what you want to do with VR, you shouldn't really buy a headset. Beat Saber's real fun though. SteamHome is (Almost) fucking great but they really need to add support for proper player models, and a lot of the people that would be making things make shit for VRChat instead. VRChat is deceptively well built, and isn't actually as functional beyond really basic physics toys and shit with a lot of it being faked via decorative entities
Leo Kelly
Any good VR city building games?
Michael Diaz
>You kinda can't play big names out there like No Man's Sky VR. Nor can most PC users unless you got a supercomputer
Adrian Gomez
Definitely Oculus, I know I'm about to sound like a faggot but they unironically developed the Rift out of passion because VR didn't exist yet instead of developing one for the sake of competing for money
Lincoln Nelson
Both of those are horrible choices but the S is a slightly less horrible choice. Go with a WMR.
>Is the quest a meme Not if you don't have a gaming PC. But if you do there is no point
Tyler Morales
>gaming where do you fags keep coming from
Aaron Myers
All right, Rift S it is for now. I have a PC with a 1080 but the Quest's completely wireless offering is pretty tempting.
>WMR Samsung Odyssey?
Nolan Bailey
Samsung Odyssey is a good choice of them. More comfortable and higher resolution than the S.
Personally I have the Lenovo and am so satisfied I feel no need up upgrade
Nicholas Hall
It's not lost any of its oomph so far, but I don't think you can replace it once it does crap out which does suck ass. Unless you play with a charging pack on constantly it doesn't wear out too fast. I figure by the time the battery is totally shot I'll have a Quest 2 or something anyhow.
Not really. My PC tower is no longer good enough by modern standards to run PCVR, and the PSVR's iffy tracking and wires drive me crazy despite the additional variety. If the Rift line is the NES this is the GameBoy, and it's incredible for being that, I end up taking it to friends' houses and parties all the time and playing it wherever I end up traveling to where I couldn't lug along a PC. There are of course PC/PSVR exclusives I miss but for the price point and my situation I'm not disappointed, there are enough good games on it I haven't gotten bored yet playing hours a day. If you have a PC that can run VR well though I'd definitely recommend only getting a Quest as an addition to a Rift S if anything so you don't miss out on the full library.
Jaxson Flores
>the Quest's completely wireless offering is pretty tempting
It's right up there with the Ouya in terms of consumer ignorance.
Juan Hernandez
Is a 2070 Super enough to run something like the Index? It seems most VR games are made to be "stylised" anyway, because anything realistic would run like shit at high resolutions and high framerates and true 3D
Aiden Hill
You can run the index on a RX 480 of course a 2070 is fine
Isaac Ross
>all in one tracking with 6 cameras >90hz >higher resolution than the Index >build in headphones >can flip up the display >700$ >optional faceplate for SteamVR tracking if you are stuck in the past and somehow like inside-out its literally the perfect place between the index and rift S
If I'm paying $700 for a fucking VR headset it's not going to be an inside-out one. Would rather save up the extra $300 for an Index.
Brody Powell
>index and rift S I'd rather have either of those than the cosmos.
Brayden Green
>no hardware onboard for the camera tracking >it's all offloaded to your CPU instead dealing with 6 colour 60hz webcams at once I'll stick with the lighthouses tyvm.
Kayden Nguyen
Does the Vive Cosmos come with Eye Tracking built in? If so, that's the one to get.
Ian Perry
It's like you can run VR on a Potato so I don't think it's that big of a deal.
Adrian Ross
>cringe Yikes
John Flores
OG Oculus Rift already takes up 5% of my CPU time using its three sensors, which operate uncompressed at 1080p/60hz on a single colour channel. 6 webcams with a compressed full color video stream (meaning more CPU needed to decompress it) I don't want to know the overhead costs of.
Why the fuck would you use VR to fuck a 3DPD woman instead of an anime girl? Get out of here you absolute normalfaggot.
Lucas Perez
It honestly feels pretty realistic. I like to play Pavlov and it kinda feels like actually holding a gun. Well. A really light, 6 ounce gun. I know I played Skyrim and fallout VR with an average of 200 mods on each and the graphics are really breathtaking. You can honestly get motion sickness just by spinning around and get a boost of adrenaline when you are falling. It is really lifelike, depending on the game. The LED eye lens do not fully encompass your range of vision. It's kind of like wearing glasses. You eventually get used to looking at what you can actually see, and only pay attention to that.
The bad news: I've had mine for a little over 2 months. My left joystick broke and will not work when I move it down. Not really a big problem because you select everything in menus with a pointer and you can turn really fast and just run the other way in game instead of walking backwards. I find that walking backwards makes your character move slower in most games anyway. I have no idea how this happened. I also scratched my lens. This is because I wear glasses. Even in virtual reality I can't escape being a blind fuck. But the good news is I have a one year warranty and they will send me a new one.
As a follow up, this purchase was my first VR purchase. Its definitely not a gimmick. I love it. I see it as being the unadulterated future of gaming. Just the difference of using a button or actually gripping a controller to manipulate the world makes a huge difference. The thing that sucks the most: there's not a lot of games or variety for it yet, as you need to have a PC-tier level of investment into gaming. The average console gamer wouldn't buy a valve index yet, so there are zero AAA games that aren't just secondhand ports like fallout or Skyrim. I can't see myself returning to non-vr games, and that kinda sucks. Going from aiming with your actual hands that are grabbing a firearm to aiming with a mouse feels extremely lackluster. Same thing with RPGs. The only games I can still kind of see myself playing in the future are rts or card games. There are not a lot of categories of games in VR. Most of them are in early access hell or some finicky Arcade style game. MOST OF THEM. But if you can find a few you really like, you can spend hours in there. In the last two months I have over 200 hours in Pavlov. It's the one I really like.
