Question, suppose PSN goes down one day. I don't mean down for maintenance or because hacked or whatever. Let's say it officially goes down, like they create a brand new service or just go bankrupt or something and PSN isn't around anymore. Games can no longer be downloaded, etc.
What does that mean for digital and physical games both? Can digital games still be played as long as they're downloaded on your system and ready to play? And can physical games be played (probably a dumb question but I know a lot of times physical games can't be played until you download updates).
I'm just wondering because I currently buy physical but I would love to switch to digital.
>digital games you're fucked unless you already have them downloaded and even then they might not work because of always online requirements >physical also fucked if you didn't already download the mandatory day one patch, always online shit still applies

>unplug router >observe results whoa

>Can digital games still be played as long as they're downloaded on your system and ready to play? well yeah, you can do that now. You don't need internet connection.
Jayden Kelly
Same thing that would happen if Steam goes down
Jaxson Wright
Alright thanks guys. Is there any benefit to going digital?
Logan Wilson
If your profile is still there and your digital games are downloaded, you'll be fine.
Adam Martin
been saying this for a long time
WE DONT KNOW IN ANY OFFICIAL CAPACITY, SO WE WILL WHEN SONY/MS/NINTENDO SAYS SO
Easton Moore
You can play them without inserting a disc Don't have to worry about discs getting fingerprints or rotten Sometimes cheaper than physical
Owen Robinson
This is exactly why I ditched the digital meme a few months ago, and this is why streaming will never take off
Christopher Torres
Fucking galaxy brain motherfucker right here.
Noah White
>always online requirements Like what? I'm pretty sure every digital game on my PS4 can be played without an internet connection.
Joshua Hall
So we just need our hundreds of games all downloaded beforehand, ezpz
Ayden Bailey
Try downloading it without an internet connection.
Jackson Bennett
>Sometimes cheaper than physical I'm starting to notice that's changing.
Leo Murphy
>starting to
Justin Campbell
Obviously you need a connection to download anything, but that's not what "always online" is. If you already have the games installed on a console, you can play them no matter what.
Connor Carter
duh?
that is what OP is pretty much saying what will happen with our libraries once the service is dead?
a window period to DL what we want? which would be shit.
or a thing for PC which we can use to upload and download our libraries to and from console.
like vita had.
Henry Martinez
Okay, I've noticed it's become a reality that digital is more expensive than physical at this point. But I guess that should have been expected as it gains more popularity.
If it goes down for good, the only way is to piracy or hope someone backs up the updates/patches of those games, as the dlc.
Anyways, most of the physical games force you to download day 1 patches or updates, so technically, they arent that physical anymore.
Cheap sales, like 5 or 10 bucks. Using games on the go, instead of changing discs, no noise of reading discs.
But if PSN goes down(including the store site), that doesnt matter. Even if a new console allows you to use the library, that doesnt mean every game from your library is available(like PS3 to PS4). More when they are trying force the PS NOW
Isaac Thomas
That's the dipshits of Square Enix, where the digital are usually more expensive than physical. Koei and some Bamco games are like that too

Thats why you should go digital with xbox because they are so rich theyll never go bankrupt. They are also ahead of the curb when it comes to fusing the game business with PC which microsoft windows dominates. They will also stream games which has a bigger backlog compared to google which is a lot more limited. So you should get an xbox scarlett or xbone x if you wanna start now. I've been playing Gears 5 on my xbox and then when i go on my pc i log in and my save data and achievements, friends list all continue there with me.
why are you talking in hypothetical this situation already happened with the Wii no one gave a shit you can still buy PSP games if you wanted, PSN isn't the service you need to worry about 3DS and Wii U are in the danger zone
I don't think I've ever heard about this. I try to search for it but I see very few people talking about it, at least in detail. There could potentially be DRM on consoles after all. Welp.
Dominic Moore
it's only an issue if you didn't set the PS4 as your primary device so it's not really an issue for the majority
Levi Rivera
You're improving but the reddit still shows. If you formed an actual coherent sentence you wouldn't need to give up and start a new line, lol
Angel Anderson
great argument you really proved me wrong
Jayden Gomez
I don't see PSN going away in a long time. Besides, if it does go down, people will definitely find a way to homebrew what's needed to still play. If PSN goes down with all the licenses you bought, just get the fucking game from some torrent place, who's gonna blame you at that point?
Juan Nelson
Do you like /r/greentexts too? Itz so random xD
Brody Perez
This has literally been discussed to death. The digital games will be gone, poof. If the non downloadable ones need a server to activate, they are gone also.
Where were you when this was written on the wall.
Benjamin Barnes
the fact that PSN is still a thing on both PS3 and PSP, despite them being fully hacked, says a lot Sony isn't ditching the network anytime soon you still have access to the download list of any games you bought
Blake Brooks
psp somehow outlived the 3ds
Samuel White
PSN being a sole service across gens and consoles was a good idea, Nintendo kind of fucked up by not doing the same.
Jaxson Walker
>rpcs3 >literally pick an up and coming ps4 emulator
