I'm still kinda confused why so many gave this game 10/10s and think it's a contender for GOTY.

The quality drops off hard after the first two routes and if you're not invested in the characters of A2 and 9S there's really nothing to engage you in the plot, since it really blows it's load at 2Bs death. All the interesting world building is laid bare and I don't feel like the game really explores any interesting concepts after that point. It just focuses on the personal stories of two rather bland characters. The ending feels really lacking too, as OP said it's a really lame, have your cake and eat it too moment.

Granted the game is unique and has some interesting ideas, but it doesn't have a solid enough foundation to back it up and it's declining quality is a huge issue too. Underneath all the platinum polish it's a 6/10 like all Taro games.

The game doesn't explore it. Ultimately Automata is just an epilogue chapter for YoRHa, which only gets a summary in the game itself even though the assault on Oahu and A2s encounter with N2 is the crux of the entire story along with A2 becoming the natural predator of all machines.
Pretty much everything that seems like it has a plot hole is because it's tied to YoRHa, even the last levels and final boss. In the grand scheme of things 2B and 9S are just a side story along with Adam and Eve with the machines all following N2s desires until A2 shows up to kill N2 and conclude the YoRHa stage play story.
Also the whole thing with 2B and A2 is essentially the whole papa/brother nier and the replicants story line condensed into a cliffnotes summary as well.

Really it feels like for alot of people it's their first "art" game. Usually these type of games (as is the case with Drakenguard and the first Nier) they're complete jankfests that aren't very accessible.

Automata on the other hand, has simple, polished mechanics that are easy to learn and in all honesty, the first route is really fucking good. So it eases people in and they are more likely to forgive the drops in quality later on. Compare this to say Pathologic, Planescape or the original Drakenguard and those games just aren't fun to play at all and take alot of getting used too. It may sound jaded, but the game feels like it was designed to appeal to critics.

Nier is a sequel to a novella version of a joke ending of Drakengard. Zero doesn't actually go into D1, the novella version of an ending does while the game goes into the manga that goes into a novella. Concert series have canon endings.

He's crazy and probably has a best friend on Square's board. Also YoRHa was written and performed before Automata went into development. Also YoRHa was a sequel to a radio drama that was a sequel to a novella about Kaine.

It's not bad, but it's a decent, but flawed game with an overzealous fanbase that gets an overwhelming amount of undue praise. Those who didn't like it as much as the majority put it under greater scrutiny.
