Not really source but more of a pattern I've noticed? For example back in Smash 4 they didn't say that Geno was from the Super Mario series but rather from Super Mario RPG: Legend of the seven stars. Ever since despite that game is full of original characters and settings, none of the are ever referenced again in any other Mario game. I guess it's for legal reasons, but it's like Nintendo treats that world as it's own universe seprerate from the usual Mushroom Kingdom. They rather just pretend it doesn't exist. Even Square Enix dosen't even seem to acknowledge it's existence.

Not him but in regards to the Mario RPG being a different world thing, I'm pretty sure he's talking about how they reveal each Mii costume with a "Super Smash Bros X [series]" thing, and with Geno's costume, instead of saying "Super Smash Bros X Super Mario" like they did previously with the Toad costume, they use the logo for Super Mario RPG specifically.
