What happens is some Games blogger says "I dislike this" and it's like the classic "5 people hated something and told the network so, and it got cancelled." Except that it's easier for the studio to say "5000 people on twitter hated it and said X is why they won't buy it!". If the game is anything less than a success (that is to say makes at least 3 times the investment within the first cycle) it's a failure and whatever bad shit people said must be a major reason for failure.
If breaks even it's a whopping failure to the company, double the money back is a minor success, and triple is a steady success.

All of this rests on the hands of the great unwashed.
