The issue is most mecha games are pretty good
From more min-maxing autism affairs like AC and Mech Warrior to more casual and action-y types like Custom Robo and Gotcha Force and Titanfall
They're pretty good but the auteurs who like giant robots are also part of a very niche sub-culture and inherently the appeal of their games is limited because the number of people who like the giant robot aesthetics is limited

It's a niche game in a niche genre at the end of a console's life, and hard as balls even for experienced players

And it's genuinely the best game FROM has ever made

back in those days jrpgs were massively overhyped to retried levels and it just carried over because the game was obscure enough for no one to actually play it, let alone get to the visual novel half.
