Those games have more problems than just that. They revolve around esports for casuals in a small team settings.

So the maps are designed for this. Things are tightly controlled (none of the dedicated server shenanigans of TF2 and previous FPSes). Classes/characters are made for tournament meta, badly as you mentioned, instead of released for gameplay style aspects. Can go on and on.

I always end up playing this game for like a week or two every few months before losing interest in it again and forgetting about it for months on end again.

There's just something about the game itself that when I jump into it, I instantly know how to play and do everything else I used to do before without getting that usual feeling you get from other games where the controls seem alien to you again and you have to slowly get used to them again.
I just jump into TF2, any match at all and I instantly know what to do and what to press, it feels almost natural.

Not to downplay the value of Medic's sciences, I'm sure the technology for ubercharging alone is worth more to mankind than all of engie's technology combined though (even without accounting for who owns the rights to what tech), we as humans extremely prioritize that kind of medical R&D
