I know it's not for everyone (read: casuals) but over time La Mulana went from being my most hated game to one of my all-time favorites. Every area just feels so unique.

Only problem I have is I never actually get around to finishing it, and by the time I get back to it after putting it down for a while, I've forgotten everything and start over.
>tfw getting into the moon temple before beating any boss
One of my absolute favourites as well, good taste user.
I'd hate the Chamber of Birth because it's the point of the game where I got stuck the hardest, but I just can't when the baller tune of Curry Song is playing.
>tfw playing randomized
>tfw have to get into TotG through the unlit backdoor
>tfw have to beat Zou without the lamp of time
That certainly was 1 hell of a playthrough.
Yup it's a fantastic game. Still waiting on my physical edition from the kickstarter of the second one though. I'm starting to think it's not going to happen ever.
Wait, they still haven't sent those out? Damn
Ancient Chaos was a mistake
Best song coming up

Corridor of Blood from LM2 has the absolute best BGM. You can clearly picture rattling bones and blood gurgling down a drain while listening to it. Great shit.
yeah, it's a pity you're always in it so short, if you actually stay a while and let the track play out it's a banger.
La-Mulana is a great game.
To bad every puzzle after the fifth guardian is retardedly obscure.
And fuck the Gate of Illusion.
>tfw randomizer gives you earth spears for starting weapon
>To bad every puzzle after the fifth guardian is retardedly obscure.
That's part of the tun
t. masochist
>tfw Earth Spears and Katana are great in LM2 while Chakrams and the Axe suck
bizarro mulana
>t. masochist
I get the feeling that everyone who likes this game also played a lot of IWBTG.
t. masochist
>Get stuck
>Already forgot what to do and how long in the game it was to do it again
Send help. Besides that, amazing Zelda game.
Just replay it, the game it self is like 4 hours if you know what to do so it really doesn't take long to get back on your feet.
Eh, I disagree. I’ll admit, La-Mulana will absolutely kill you with unexpected heavy objects and laugh at you while giving you an achievement to commemorate the occasion, but it’s not every single screen filled with instant-death traps you have absolutely no way to see coming. The aforementioned unexpected kills are at least forewarned to a degree in La-Mulana…
Or maybe I just don’t like the style of game IWBTG is, where you’re expected to die hundreds of times to memorize patterns on screens.
Help can be yours for the price of more information, like where you’re stuck, which game you’re playing (obviously), and a shot of your inventory.
Has 2 been patched yet to run well on toasters?
I've read that the last patch made a mess of the music, so probably wouldn't be worth it anyway.
>Too scared to even start it.
You should be. La Mulana is the devil's work. Not only is it impossible, but if you cheat by looking up a FAQ you'll regret it for the rest of your life.
>but if you cheat by looking up a FAQ you'll regret it for the rest of your life
I did and I don't regret it. I would've never beat it completely blind.
take notes nigga
write down every tablet
draw maps and put notes on it like "doublejump needed here" or "3-seal"
La Mulana really is the best exploration game. You start out in some dingy little village and as yuo get further in you're partaking in a complicated ritual with witches to summon a hellish monstrosity.
>hellish monstrosity
>implying you wouldn't fuck baphomet
Best new feature of LM2 was introducing even more waifus
What is the point of beating a challenge if you cheat?
Fuck, I got it day 1 only to discover it ran like shit on my toaster once I got into the first real dungeon. I can't play it like this, everything feels like it's moving in molasses.
To be fair that one part where you have to press down randomly was very fucking obscure. Maybe the clues you get are more clear in Japanese.
And I never really understood the whole mantra part, I just brute-forced half of them. I know the manual says how it is supposed to work but it's not like the game ever points it out. Besides reading the manual at the start of the game and then 30 hours later when you're at that mantra part is a stretch.
yeah I'll give you that taking a knee = pressing down is kinda eh, not that intuitive. Then again, how many options do you have, right? Only so many buttons you can press.
>it was not me but my clone
>To be fair that one part where you have to press down randomly was very fucking obscure.
Both of the times you do it, you have a reason to try to go down. For the Illusion one, you can see a teleport point within the wall below the pot that drops the single fallen item. For the other one, it had something to do with the 2nd children lore with one of them carrying water to the tower (hint: how would they carry it?) There are a few spots in the game where there is an unseen ladder that you can take (the one on the Spring grail tablet screen for example, so it's not totally crazy to try pressing down to go down.
>Maybe the clues you get are more clear in Japanese.
Some are.
>And I never really understood the whole mantra part, I just brute-forced half of them. I know the manual says how it is supposed to work but it's not like the game ever points it out.
There are 9, maybe more examples of the maps wrapping past the edges in-game, like the ladder close to the fairy point in chamber of extinction.
I like that LM2 had you do a puzzle again in the final fight
>Dignified mausoleum painting the giants as a noble race
>In reality their actual corpses are just strewn around the place
Juxtaposition
>Take notes of everything
>Forget detail
>Even more stuck due to believing you have all the information you need.
Does it count if I only looked up weapons and such that you can miss permanently?
>entire history carefully written down painting a clear picture of the wars between them
>in reality Abuto made it all up to scapegoat Sakit and get blame off of him
Sakit... had a hard life
>write down almost everything except for 1 tablet you dismiss as lore
>you need it 20 hours later
How can you even sleep at night?
So which version of LM2 do I play? I've played the unpatched initial release twice and I hear it's been borked ever since.
No clue, I burned through the game in a week on release so I'm totally out of the loop regarding any later issues
How does the sequel compare with it?
La Mulana 3 when
Who would have thought Mother was so sexy?
You also wrap around the gate of guidance to get the first ankh jewel.
I don't think 2 sold very well despite the successful campaign. Feels bad.
Speaking of which though is there a download to la mulana 2's ost?
Same but slightly better.
>I don't think 2 sold very well despite the successful campaign. Feels bad.
It took too long, I though they've had run away with the cash.
I bought it but can't upload it from my wage cage.
Better in some things, worse in others, but overall a very worthy successor and it definitely succeeded in scratching the same itch for me.
You mean the grail? Yeah, that's another example, and also the first you would likely encounter.
Naramura recently confirmed he will keep working on new games, but there won't be a La Mulana 3
>games that aren't about solving puzzles in a metroidvania
why live
Best area in 2 for sure, great gimmick, beautiful aesthetic and I loved all the creative deathtraps
Here's a bump on me, OP.
For sure
Immortal battlefield was great too
>huge area but every single room is so distinct it's hard to get lost unlike the twin labyrinth from 1
>navigation is easy
>lots of self-contained puzzles that can be solved during your first visit
I adore the game, but honestly it's too obtuse. I stopped playing not because it's difficult, but because I don't have hours on end to spend 'exploring'. That was couple of years ago. If I was to play now, I'd have to start over because I don't have 50 screens of dubious spatial puzzles in my head anymore.
Valhalla was pretty kino too
And of course DSLM and Nibiru
>great gimmick
But that webm shows a horrible side of both La Mulanas: falling to your death over several screens, it's just a boring pitfall.
Don't keep it in your head, write it down. It was intended to be played like that, getting creative how you process all the information.
that's a fun instant death trap though, plus it's right near the start of the area so you waste no time
The bad instant death traps are the ones that just instantly kill you for no reason, just like the ones in the underworld
Good thing they patched those out
It's pretty shit. More of a 2D puzzle game than actual metroidvania. Gameplay evolution is non-existent, you don't even get any movement upgrades over double jump.
The only thing it really has going on for it is a huge and intricate world but the puzzles are borderline sadistic and obnoxious at multiple points of the game.
Were you japed?
I was japed
This was my favorite trap from La-Mulana 2.
I like this game but I got stuck somewhere and kinda fell off it. Should get back to it, don't even remember where I was.
>The village in LM2 is basically the same except for Xelpud who now lives in a literal fucking castle
Hahaha what a fucking asshole
For me, it's Fairy Queen, Hooded Thot and Red Hair Sword Thot
>Where is this?
>t. Olympian
Best fucking tablet in the game
>tfw didn't believe
Yeah it's a great one. I also loved the one that explicitly fucked with players who played the first game by resembling the trap from Gate of Illusion miniboss but then bamboozling you
There's just so much soul in everything. So much effort put into every area. A perfect game and a perfect sequel.
>So much effort put into every area
Aside from Spiral Hell
>perfect
the overreliance on mantras for puzzles and the fact that the blood corridor spoils you on most of the areas in the game make it not perfect
I'm planning on starting this finally, but how does the save system work? I kinda want to play t here and there while I do my schoolwork
Each Area has a grail point at which you can save. You can also warp to these points at any time if you have read them once and have the holy grail, which you should find in the first area
Alright beauty thx
I recommend reading the manual and/or watching the official starting videos, as it'll give you some nice tips to get started (like buy the fucking scanner immediately etc)
>is there a download to la mulana 2's ost?
yeah its on steam
BUY IT
I'm too jewish to buy music
>blood corridor spoils you on most of the areas in the game
I loved that. You start jerking around with the corridor and discover like 4 completely new areas, like WHAT THE FUCK IS HAPPENING
I didn't figure out that you could jerk the corridor around until very late, like after beating six bosses when I finally had to find my way to the Underworld. So I didn't get spoiled on any of them.
Let's be real now Yea Forums.
Where did you have to actually use a guide to proceed forward?
I had to use one to find the Dragon Bone and how to awaken the children of Tiamat. For everything else, just hours of hitting walls and using items everywhere.
the mantras
the endless corridor numbers because I accidentally skipped Mulbruk's dialogue that explained it and once you skip it there are no other hints and the dialogue doesn't repeat ever
the fact that killing Bahamut opens a door
the fact that Mulbruk gives you the necronomicon only after you need it
Needing to use some item on curryland, maybe it was the skull or some scepter
The fucking LADDER in the tower of the goddeses, fuck you that was bullshit
La Mulana is literally my favourite game of all time.
Anime Indiana Jones themed Metroidvania with good riddles and puzzles is my fetish.
How to proceed in Chamber of Birth
How tf was I supposed to know that that smudge on the wall was a fucking maternity statue fuck you
How to proceed in Gate of Illusion
both for the 1 light that isn't blinking that apparently scanning that somehow makes u a wise man
and for that fucking skeleton that was actually a dais, fuck you. Later on when that element gets used it's fine because now I know about it but the first time is fucking bullshit
And while I didn't have to look shit up for the mantra bullshit and sorta understood how the maps folded together, I still in some places had to try 2-5 spots before I found the right one
Also while I eventually found it, the overworld TotG door appearing after you defeat Viy is indefensible. Only true case of objectively bad design imo.
>Fall for it TWO fucking times
I wanted to smash my computer when I found out. Needed my friend to give me a hint on it while he was laughing his ass out.
Pretty much the whole chamber of birth because I gave up on solving that shit after a while
Stuff like throwing a chakram at the right spot, using serpent staff would take years for me to find
>tfw I completed the mantra puzzle by sheer trial and error and it wasn't until I read on it later that understood how the maps actually worked
To be fair it was a massive mind blow.
>casual filter
getting the grail
>definite casual filter
gate of illusion
>hardcore filter
chamber of birth
Prove me wrong, you can't
>Solve a puzzle
>Get an achivement
>"Huh, that's weird"
>Turns out I actually needed a special item that makes the puzzle way way easier
>This happens a couple of times
Don't know if I was being retarded or genius
>finally beat Zou after hours of beating my head into the wall because I thought it was just supposed to be a hard miniboss
>achievement pops up
FUCK
youtube.com
kujata's boss theme is so fucking good
working through la mulana 2 with Yea Forums is absolutely one of the best gaming memories i have
>Also while I eventually found it, the overworld TotG door appearing after you defeat Viy is indefensible. Only true case of objectively bad design imo.
The entrance appears on the map with the software combo enabled.
One of the best games of all time. Interesting that only 4% of people who own it on Steam have beaten it. Though this was when I checked shortly before La-Mulana 2's launch.
If you want to see something sad, look how many people gave up after getting two achievements
Same, that first week of all figuring it out together was pure ludo
>when that one guy posted a screenshot of him in the underworld (an area everyone desperately wanted to get to because they had done all they could for now in the rest of the map) and everyone lost their shit
Amazing shit. How tf did we all not talk to Izanagi (silent piece of shit) again after the first encounter.
The Tower of the Goddess entrance only becoming visible after killing Viy frustrated me so much that from that point onward pretty much every time I got stuck for long enough I started suspecting bullshit and checked that one hint-based guide. The puzzle always turned out to be reasonable though so I really wish I didn't. I was really baffled when I later played the original and that entrance was visible from the get-go.
At least I did the whole Gate of Illusion and Chamber of Birth on my own though so that's a bit of a consolation for me.
>when that one guy finally posted a pic of him opening the chest on top of the twin snakes statue that contained the gear(or was it the thunder urn?)
Are guides basically required in LM1/2? I see no point in playing the games if it's required
Guide is not necessary, all clues are laid there if you're smart enough.
>if you're smart enough
How smart we talkin'?
I mapped out the whole game (picture related) when I was playing La-Mulana 1 and I still had to use a guide ~3 times. I played the remake and MSX version at the same time.
For La-Mulana 2 I managed to beat it without using a guide with the exception of a bug/translation error. There was a hint missing in the English translation which made a puzzle pretty much impossible to solve, but I think that is fixed now.
>MSX OST
Based. I find it much better than the remake's music.
youtube.com
just got tha pepper
Did they mention something about the OST changes in the latest Steam version?
Most songs sound worse now.
For La Mulana 2 forgot to mention
I don't think it's about being smart or dumb but about taking notes and being able to keep track of everything.
I played 1 without knowing kind of game it was and I used a guide for a big part of the game.
In 2 however I only needed a hint for one endgame puzzle where the devs later on changed the hints to make it clearer so I'm happy with it.
Not really. All playsim said was that they're going to report the music issue to nigoro in the steam bug report discussion page. How do they keep breaking new shit with each issue they fix?
>I don't think it's about being smart or dumb
I disagree. Notes are required, yes, but if you're stupid you will never figure out things such as:
>Prove thou art small
or
>Riv was the one who guided water to the tower. Seek what he points at.
I forget if it was already confirmed where La Mulana is located IRL but the fact that they sell Pepper makes me think it's in the spice islands around Indonesia.
Started a new game of 2, made it to the Chain Whip. Such a great puzzle; you don't ned no fucking ice mantle to beat the lava. And then you think you've locked yourself out of gtting the whip like in 1, but no; you just have to get it from the room right underneath. Masterful!
I kind of prefer the song in the beta.
>Easter in-game fucking NEVER
did they release the hell temple already?
FUCK LOGIC
I fell behind right away because I foolishly couldn't find the gate of the dead. I beat like 4 guardians before going there.
I got stuck forever not finding the dino statue
The sequel (oddly enough) is harder.
this is what happened nearly every damn time I replayed la-mulana.
I memorized how to get double jump within an hour and a half but everything after that is a blur.
The soundtrack on the original MSX rendition is better than the one from the remake.
youtube.com
Prove me wrong
wow that was hard
youtube.com
>Ancient Chaos after collecting most skulls
fuck that spiral tower
>there are people that still think the game getting harder is directly related to the amount of skulls you have
lol
Does it get harder through beating guardians or what?
There's a point counter like in 1 that goes up with every item you get and boss you kill and that's what makes the game harder
that just not being a fucking retard
if you jump on a unknow screen you're a retard
if you know the screen you know you can't jump so you're a fucking retard
I always wanted to make a clone of this game, but I don't think I'd ever be able to commit.
Puzzle platformer action games are such a rare thing in this fashion.
Ancient Chaos was unironically my favorite area.
>Best theme ever
>Babylonion aesthetics
>Creepy-ass enemies and lava
>That fucking boss which reminds me of some Atari game I played when I was a kid
Seriously? I never knew this. So holding off on beating those guardians isn't going to work, huh? But I don't wanna fight the cow.
>youtube.com
Gay ass shit fag twinkles playing over the song
>youtube.com
WHO HATH DISTURBED MY 1,000 YEAR SLUMBER?!
I love the original MSX but the remake are way better dude
That doesn't look too bad. And I can see how you reasoned around a couple of the puzzles. Looks kinda fun.
Depends on how much you need to take notes or keep track off and if these things are apparent when you find them. If it's not obvious something is imortant and you miss it, it would reallly suck.
>LM2 endgame
how did they drop the ball so hard?
should've made the brahma puzzle mandatory though
>did LM1 100% on three different tries
>i'm not doing hell mode ever again in my life
>LM2 finally releases
>youtube.com
They transformed all my hate and anger into fucking power, and it was great.
for me it's Nibiru
youtube.com
>share a drink with Sakit
>finally get past the underworld riddle
>beat Hel, the coolest boss
>find out a third combination for the Dark Lord Footsteps
>explore space
>seal the corridor
>music changes
>save Lemeza and his dad
>kino levels off the charts
>then get forced to look for the entrance of the boat of souls for hours
>it's not even a puzzle, just a scavengers hunt with only 1 hint in the form of a drawing that was hard to interpret
>after hours find it
>run through a toned down copypaste of Hell temple avoiding all enemies
>beat shitty and easy final boss first try
>credits
way to drop the ball
Never forget that we never got this song in the game and we got no Lumisa lewds or any lewds at all
youtube.com
And I wish it had been forced onto you before the endgame too. I only solved it when all I was missing was the skull in the underworld and I had already found out the secret of the ruins (them being shaped the way they are and how that's used for a few puzzles) so even though it was one of my favourite puzzles it still felt a bit underwhelming.
Is the game good?
what are its flaws?
It's perfect in every way. It's just very fucking hardcore and will make you hate life.
